Shippensburg Men and Women Lead After Day One of PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships

The Shippensburg men’s and women’s track and field teams lead after the first day of the PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Dome. The Red Raiders’ men’s team lead defending champion Lock Haven by a 54.50-41 margin, while the Shippensburg women, the 2010 champions, hold a slim one-point advantage over Slippery Rock, 44-43. 

On the men’s side, Slippery Rock’s Chris Warning won the weight throw with a distance of 60-08 to outpace Mark Manno of Lock Haven. Shippensburg’s distance medley relay team of Matt Gelety, Kevin Shaw, Jacob Jones and Bryan Beegle finished first with a time of 10:06.99, just under two seconds ahead of Mansfield. Shippensburg’s Sean Stetler defeated Lock Haven’s Alex Monroe by just 29 one-hundredths of a second in winning the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:34.33.

Slippery Rock’s Cameron Daugherty narrowly defeated Craig Sherwood of Kutztown with a winning distance of 15-11.75 in the pole vault. His mark was also an NCAA provisional distance. East Stroudsburg’s 4x800-meter relay team of Amr Aldeen, Mahmoud Aldeen, Mike Saparito and Steve Werley finished first by just over a second over Slippery Rock with a time of 7:45.11. Shippensburg’s Herman Kirkland capped the first day by winning the final event, the long jump, with a PSAC record distance of 25-03.25

On the women’s side, Shippensburg’s distance medley relay team of Abigail Huber, Megan Rhyner, Hanna Lash and Neely Spence earned an NCAA provisional time of 11:57.57, more than two seconds in front of Slippery Rock. In the long jump, Indiana (Pa.)’s Brianna Liebold earned an NCAA provisional mark while finishing first with a distance of 18-10.50. Lock Haven’s Vanita Moses outpaced defending champion Ashley Pinter of Kutztown with a PSAC record and NCAA provisional distance of 57-01.

Mansfield’s Brenae Edwards won the 5,000-meter run by finishing in 16:45.92, an NCAA automatic qualifying time. In the 4x800-meter relay, the Red Raiders’ team of Jaime McCollum, Emily Dubs, Ashley Fornshell and Amanda Raudabaugh won with a time of 9:24.37. Slippery Rock’s Kelly Bruder won the pentathlon with 3,366 points on the strength of victories in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump. Megan Breski of Shippensburg won the pole vault with a distance of 12-00.50.

Edinboro University’s Mike S. Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Dome will be the site of the PSAC Indoor Track & Field championships for the second straight year on Saturday and Sunday, February 26-27.

One-day and two-day passes will be available the day of the event. Adult tickets are priced at $12 for a two-day pass and $7 for a one day pass. Student tickets are $3 for both days and $2 for a single day pass. PSAC students get in free with a valid student ID.

Doors will open at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the first event slated to start at 1 p.m. Doors will open at 9 a.m. on Sunday with the first event scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled to tentatively begin at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday.

Participating teams in the women’s indoor track & field championships include Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, IUP, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and West Chester. The men’s field will include Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, East Stroudsburg, IUP, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and West Chester.

Women’s Preview
Shippensburg’s women’s team snapped Slippery Rock’s three-year stranglehold on the championship title with a 173.25-154.50 victory over the Rock in 2010 for the Red Raiders’ first team championship. Neely Spence, the female track and overall athlete of the meet, won the 5,000-meter run and ran the anchor leg of Shippensburg’s winning 4,000-meter distance relay team. She also won the one-mile and 3,000-meter runs. Brianna Liebold of Indiana(Pa.) won the triple jump Sunday and finished second in the long jump en route to being named the female field athlete of the meet. Both will be in action to defend their titles this weekend.

Along with Spence and Liebold, Slippery Rock’s Tiffany Tedesco will also be competing as she defends her titles in the 60-meter and 200-meter runs. In all, there will be defending champions in 13 events this weekend.

Spence has the top national time in the 5,000-meter run and the top PSAC time in the 3,000-meter. She is also a member of the 4,000-meter distance medley relay team, which has the top national time. Liebold will defend her title in the triple jump having posted the third-best national time earlier this season.

In other events, defending high jump champion Lynn Mayer, of East Stroudsburg, has the fourth-best mark this season, and East Stroudsburg’s Trina Carito will attempt to defend her title in the indoor pentathlon with the sixth-best national score.


Men’s Preview
The Lock Haven men won their first title since 2007 and fifth overall last year by the narrowest margin in championship history, 135-134.50, over East Stroudsburg. After failing to winning any events on the first day of competition and tied for first with Shippensburg, Lock Haven’s men’s team bounced back to win two on Sunday and had eight competitors place in the top three of an event.

East Stroudsburg’s Chris Reddick was named the male track and overall athlete of the meet after finishing second in the 400-meter dash and winning the 200-meter dash on Sunday. Shippensburg’s Don Graybill, the male field athlete of the meet, won the pole vault portion of the heptathlon Sunday and defended his title in the event with 5,092 points.

This weekend’s competition will feature defending champions in six events. California (Pa.)’s Brice Myers, who won the 60-meter hurdles in 2010, has the sixth-best national time this season. Lock Haven’s Chris Amman has the four best national score in the heptathlon and the second-best PSAC mark in the high jump, behind only Indiana (Pa.)’s Leander Toney.

In other events, Slippery Rock’s Kevin Jewel and California (Pa.)’s Alex Smith have top 15 national times in the 800-meter run and are separated by less than a second for the top PSAC time.
