The Gannon women's basketball team will take its 36-0 record into the NCAA Division II Women's Elite Eight being held in St. Joseph, Mo. this week. The national quarterfinals will be held on Tuesday, March 23, and the Golden Knights will open against Tusculum at 7:00 p.m. (ET). Gannon broke open a close game in which it trailed over five minutes into the second half and ended the game on a 31-13 run to top Millersville 65-48 in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship game on Monday night. The win advances Gannon to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time in program history. Shippensburg’s Lauren Beckley has been named the PSAC East Athlete of the Year for the second straight year while Kristina Freeman, the leading scorer on Gannon’s undefeated and No. 1 nationally ranked team has been named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year as that duo highlights the 2009-10 All-PSAC women’s basketball teams as voted on by the league’s head coaches. Three PSAC men's and three PSAC women's basketball teams have been selected to their respective NCAA Tournament fields as the NCAA announced the Division II tournament fields on Sunday evening. California and Gannon broke open close games in the second half and eventually rolled to double-digit victories over West Chester and Kutztown, respectively, in the semifinals of the PSAC women's basketball tournament on Friday evening from the Hammermill Center on Gannon's campus. That sets up a championship game rematch of last year's NCAA regional championship game, won by the Vulcans.
