PSAC Athletes of the Week - 10/2 Monday, October 2, 2017 10:30 AM Men's Golf Athlete of the Week: Ethan Bennett (Fr.) Gannon Stoney Creek, Ontario / Cardinal Newman Catholic Bennett shot two rounds of 73 at the Howard "Bud" Elwell Fall Invitational to earn his first career medalist title on Monday. Bennett's career-best score led the Gannon men's golf team to its first team title of the season. Women's Golf Athlete of the Week: Shannon Weber (R-Jr.) Kutztown Kutztown, Pa. / Kutztown Area (Millersville) Weber won her second meet of the season Monday, winning the KU Fall Invitational by one stroke. She shot a 159 over the weekend on one of the toughest courses in the region, and led KU to a team victory. She shot a field-best 78 in round one and followed with an 81 Monday. She is averaging a 78.8 this season. Field Hockey Athlete of the Week: Alexis Gazzio Millersville (So. / MF) Hershey, Pa. / Hershey Gazzio scored the game-winning goal in both of Millersville's victories. She scored in the first half against No. 6 West Chester and it held up for a 1-0 win. She followed that by scoring 20 seconds into overtime in a 1-0 win at Mercyhurst. Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week Kaylyn West East Stroudsburg (Sr.) Mount Joy, Pa. / Elizabethtown West placed first in a field of 106 runners to lead ESU to a first place finish overall in the team standings at Salisbury's Don Cathcart Invitational on Saturday. The senior completed the 6k course in 21:39.47, beating out second-place Marissa Coombs from Virginia Wesleyan by over 15 seconds. West earned her second-career individual title (won the Hamilton Invitational during her junior season in 2016). Her finishing time was the third-quickest in team history on Salisbury's course. West has ranked as ESU's No. 1 scorer in each of the season's first three meets. Prior to Saturday's overall team title, the Warriors also ranked as the top DII/DII school in their opening meets at DI Fordham (Sept. 9) and Monmouth (Sept. 16) ... All-PSAC First Team runner in 2016, All-PSAC Second Team performer in 2015. Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week Austin Cooper IUP (Sr.) King of Prussia, Pa. / Upper Merion Cooper broke the IUP men's cross country 8K record with a time of 24:35 in the Brown race at Lehigh's Paul Short Run last Friday. Cooper finished first overall out of nearly 400 runners in the race, which is the second toughest men's race of the day and comprised of nearly all Division I teams. Cooper beat the old IUP record by 15 seconds (24:50), which was originally set in 1975. Volleyball: Central Division Athlete of the Week: Samantha Webber Shippensburg (So. / MB) Coplay, Pa. / Parkland Webber had 25 kills, six blocks and hit .352 with just six errors on 54 attempts in a 2-0 weekend. At Edinboro, Webber led all players with 14 kills, swinging an excellent .478, to go along with three block assists. At The Rock, Webber was one of two Raiders with double-digit kills, totaling 11, while hitting .258 with three block assists. SHIP swept Edinboro in Edinboro for the first time since 1989 and then swept The Rock at The Rock, making SU one of three remaining 4-0 PSAC teams (along with Cal and IUP). Volleyball: Northwest Division Athlete of the Week: Ally Smith Gannon (So. / OH) Penfield, N.Y. / Webster Schroeder Smith compiled 22 kills in in two matches (7 sets) for the Lady Knights. Smith hit at a .279 clip, averaging 3.14 kills per set. She also dug 30 balls at a rate of 4.29 per set. Gannon swept the Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats and Lock Haven Bald Eagles. The Lady Knights improved to 13-3 overall, 3-1 in the PSAC. Volleyball: Southeast Division Athlete of the Week: Jillian Grammer West Chester (Jr. / S) Center Valley, Pa. / Southern Lehigh Grammer provided 61 assists as well as 17 digs in a pair of matches on the road this weekend for the Golden Rams. Against host Clarion, Grammer registered 28 assists, 10 digs, and three aces. Volleyball: Southwest Division Co-Athlete of the Week: Viktoria Farian Seton Hill (Fr. / OH) Richfield, Ohio / Revere Farian helped the Griffins go 2-0 in PSAC play this weekend. She finished with two double doubles of 13 kills and 18 digs vs East Stroudsburg and added 13 kills and 15 digs against Kutztown. For the two matches she added an ace and 3 blocks. Her total attacks were 26 kills, 11 errors in 61 attempts (.246) Volleyball: Southwest Division Co-Athlete of the Week: Julia Holden Clarion (So. / OH) Burnswick, Ohio / Brunswick Holden was dominant as Clarion held on for a 3-1 win over West Chester on Friday, authoring the best performance of her career in the win over the Golden Rams. She recorded a career-high 23 kills on 67 attempts with just eight errors for a .224 hitting percentage, while also adding four aces, four digs and three blocks. Holden is second on the team in kills per set with a 3.35 average on the year, just 0.05 behind the team lead. Her 17 aces lead the Golden Eagles. Women's Soccer Athlete of the Week: Taylor Lewis Gannon (So. / Forward) Erie, Pa. / Harbor Creek Lewis scored two goals in the 3-0 shutout at Roberts Wesleyan on Sept. 27 and two goals in the 2-1 win at Lock Haven on Sept. 30. She has registered a multi-goal performance in three out of the last four games. Lewis also recorded her eighth career game-winning goal against the Bald Eagles, which moves her into third place all-time at Gannon as only a sophomore. Men's Soccer Co-Athlete of the Week: Henrik Berg Seton Hill (Fr. / Forward) Aasa, Sweden / Elof Lindaely Gymnasium Berg scored both game winners as the Griffins went 2-0 in PSAC play this week. He scored a total of three goals and added 2 assists on the week. He scored both goals in the Griffins 2-1 win at Slippery Rock and then scored a goal and added 2 assists in the 4-1 home win over Shippensburg. Men's Soccer Co-Athlete of the Week: Troy Teresak Lock Haven (Sr. / Goalkeeper) Pompton Plains, N.J. / Depaul Catholic The LHU men's soccer team went 2-0 last week with both wins coming by way of upsets vs. top-25 teams. Senior goalkeeper Troy Teresak was a big reason behind those victories as he combined for 14 saves in back-to-back 1-0 shutouts. Teresak and LHU opened the week with a huge PSAC match vs. Millersville. Teresak finished with four saves including two sensational stops in the second half as LHU knocked off No. 9 and previously unbeaten Millersville. The win also marked the first over perennial PSAC and NCAA Division II regional power Millersville since 2011. Ironically enough it's also the last time LHU downed a top-15 team. Lock Haven's last win over a top-10 team came in 2005. On Saturday at No. 22 West Virginia Wesleyan, Teresak was the story as he turned in a 10-save effort in the 1-0 road win. The 10 saves are the third-most for a single-game in LHU history. Football: Eastern Division Offensive Athlete of the Week Rasheem James West Chester (Fr. / WR) Philadelphia, Pa. / Ben Franklin James caught six passes for 142 yards and one touchdown in West Chester's 37-22 win over Kutztown. James' 85-yard TD catch helped WCU build a 21-6 lead and was instrumental in the Golden Rams' win.The catch game on a 3rd-and-10 at ECU's 15-yard line. Football: Eastern Division Defensive Athlete of the Week Dakota Thompson Shippensburg (Jr. / DL) Laureldale, Pa. / Muhlenberg Thompson had a career-high three sacks and was constantly in the Bald Eagle backfield. Thompson totaled eight tackles - 3.5 for loss - and also recovered a second-half fumble. Shippensburg's 17 tackles-for-loss are tied for the second-most in an NCAA Division II game this season and the most in a game by a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) squad through the first five weeks of play. It is the most single-game tackles-for-loss by the Red Raiders since 18 against Millersville on Sept. 22, 2012. In the third quarter, Lock Haven ran 15 plays and kicked a field goal after a muffed punt but totaled negative-8 yards of offense in the frame. Two of Thompson's sacks came in that frame. Football: Eastern Division Special Teams Athlete of the Week Marquis Fells East Stroudsburg (Jr. / TB/KR/PR) York, Pa. / Central York Fells had a 67-yard punt return for a TD for ESU's 2nd return TD of the day in Saturday's 33-13 win at Cheyney. Fells added 31-yard kick return. The touchdown gave ESU 33-7 lead on 2nd play of 4th quarter Along with sophomore WR Elijah Rehm (60-yard KR TD), gave ESU its first game with both kick and punt returns for TD's in 28 seasons, since Dennis Mailhot ran back a kick and punt vs. Mansfield in 1989 ... ranks 2nd in PSAC in punt return avg (18.7) and 7th in kick return avg (24.4). Football: Western Division Offensive Athlete of the Week Samir Bullock IUP (So. / RB) Philadelphia, Pa. / Archbishop Ryan Bullock tied former Shippensburg running back John Kuhn and current IUP teammate Chris Temple's PSAC record with six rushing touchdowns in Saturday's 57-14 win at Seton Hill. Bullock rushed 31 times for 263 yards, the fourth most rushing yards in single game IUP history. His touchdowns came on six straight IUP possessions in the first, second and third quarters, as the Crimson Hawks went from trailing 7-2 to leading 43-14. His performance helped the Crimson Hawks total 431 rushing yards and 640 total yards, both the fourth highest totals in program history. Football: Western Division Defensive Co-Athlete of the Week Zuril Hendrick Edinboro (Jr. / CB) Rochester, N.Y. / Pittsford Mendon Hendrick entered the game leading Division II in interceptions with five. The junior cornerback boosted that total to seven with two more pickoffs. He returned both 35 yards, the first for a touchdown. It marked his second pick-six of the season. Hendrick now has seven interceptions on the season, tied for fourth in a season. The school record is nine by Raji El-Amin in 2003. Hendrick has now returned two interceptions for a touchdown this year, tying the school record held by Branden Williams and Michael Sims. He has 12 career interceptions, which is tied for seventh at Edinboro. He keyed a defense which limited Clarion to 250 yards, a low for an Edinboro opponent in 2017. His second interception led to another Edinboro touchdown. Football: Western Division Defensive Co-Athlete of the Week Marcus Martin Slippery Rock (Sr. / DE) West Mifflin, Pa. / West Mifflin Martin recorded a nine-yard sack on third down in overtime that forced Cal into a 48-yard FG attempt, which went wide left for the first FG miss of the season for the Vulcans. SRU went on to win the game on its next possession in OT. Martin finished the night with a team-high 11 total tackles, including 3.0 sacks. He also recovered a crucial fumble in the second half deep in Cal territory to set up an SRU touchdown and finished with two additional QB hurries. Martin's NCAA Division II career records now stand at 50.0 sacks and 83.0 TFL. He needs just 3.5 more sacks to become the all-time NCAA leader among all divisions. Football: Western Division Special Teams Athlete of the Week Jake Chapla Slippery Rock (So. / PK) Pittsburgh, Pa. / Plum Chapla booted a game-winning 36-yard field goal in overtime to lift No. 18 Slippery Rock to a 47-44 win over No. 5 California (Pa.) ... Chapla also kicked a 43-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. His lone FG miss of the night was just short from 52 yards. Chapla also punted six times for an average of 39.7 yards with three punts inside the 20.
