LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- West Chester senior Jarel Elder was named the 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Football Eastern Division Athlete of the Year while redshirt junior teammate Tyler Morrissey earned Defensive Athlete of the Year accolades, the league announced Wednesday afternoon in conjunction with the release of the all-conference football teams.

All-conference teams and major award winners were determined by a vote of the league’s East head coaches.

Elder is the ninth Golden Ram to win the award while it marks the 10th time that WCU has boasted the representative. It is the first time WCU has claimed the award since 2014. Elder is one of five 1000-yard rushers in the PSAC and has the third best average per game (96.5). The Allentown, Pa., product has turned in 15 rushing touchdowns and has hauled in 20 passes for 292 yards and a touchdown. Elder rushed for a season-high 149 yards and two touchdowns against Shippensburg. WCU earned the No. 5 seed in Super Region One and will travel to SU in the opening round of the NCAA DII Football Championship Saturday, Nov. 18.

Morrissey is the fifth Golden Ram to win award and first since 2015. It is the seventh time WCU has boasted the representative. Morrissey sits second in the league in tackles per game (10.2), total tackles (112), third in assisted tackles (59) and tied for seventh in solo (57). The Springfield, Pa., native, impressed with a 20-tackle performance in the PSAC Championship game against IUP Saturday, Nov. 11. He had six games of at least 10 tackles.

SU’s Winston Eubanks was tabbed Freshman of the Year while being one of three receivers in the league to average more than 100 receiving yards per contest. He is the fourth Red Raider to win the award and first since 2002. Eubanks hauled in 43 passes for 1160 yards and 12 touchdowns. He averaged 105.5 yards per game and a league-high 27 yards per reception. Eubanks turned in six games of 100 yards or more while boasting a season-high 176 against WCU. He had five games with multiple touchdown receptions.

SU’s Mark Maciejewski garnered the Coach of the Year merit. It marked the second time in his career (2012) he earned it and is the sixth time SU has boasted it. Maciejewski’s squad posted a 10-1 overall record while going 6-1 in league play. His defense leads the PSAC in points allowed (11.7) while the offense impressed with the third-best output at 38.4 points per contest. Under his direction this season, 10 SU athletes earned all-conference recognition, including seven on the first team. SU’s offense is second in yards per game at 466.6. The Red Raiders allowed 14 points or less in all but two contests.

WCU paced the East with 13 all-conference members while SU boasted the most first-team representatives with seven. 11 Kutztown athletes earned all-conference recognition while boasting six first-teamers.
