SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. --- East Stroudsburg senior Sydney McCarthy has been named the PSAC Field Hockey Champion Scholar, the league announced Friday afternoon prior to ESU’s semifinal.

McCarthy claimed the coveted prize during the 2016 season. She is the first field hockey student-athlete to repeat since the award was introduced in 2011-12.

The PSAC Champion Scholar Awards are modeled after the NCAA's Elite 89 award and honor the student-athlete with the top grade point average who is competing at the site of each of the PSAC's 23 team championship finals. The selection criteria for the Champion Scholar Awards is identical to that of the NCAA Elite 89 awards, which honor the student-athlete with the top GPA at each of the championship finals sites of the 89 NCAA championships across all three divisions – I, II, and III.

The Reading, Pa., native and Muhlenberg graduate has amassed 105 credits towards her exercise science degree while sporting a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
