PSAC Athletes of the Week - 11/14 Monday, November 14, 2016 2:30 PM Volleyball Athletes of the Week: Northwest: Hannah Kren (Sr.) Gannon (OH) Waukesha, Wisc. / Wisconsin Lutheran Kren posted 26 kills (4.33 k/s), 18 digs (3.00 d/s), .333 hitting percentage and two block assists in this weekend's key PSAC matches. Kren collected 15 kills and seven digs in the highly anticipated match at Edinboro for the PSAC Northwest Division title and the No. 1 seed in the PSAC tournament. The Lady Knights swept the Fighting Scots in three sets to become the PSAC regular season champions. Southwest: Ashley Leto (Jr.) California (OH) Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny Leto averaged a team-high 5.40 digs and added 2.60 kills and 3.40 points per set last week, as the Vulcans posted three wins in divisional play to clinch the automatic qualifier to the league tournament from the PSAC Southwest. She finished last week with a 26 combined kills on a .276 hitting percentage, while recording 54 digs over 10 sets. Leto posted seven kills, 14 digs and three service aces on Tuesday in a 3-0 win against Seton Hill. The Pittsburgh native nearly matched her career high in digs on Friday, finishing with 26 digs along with nine kills on a .233 hitting percentage in a 3-1 victory over IUP. Leto closed the regular season on Saturday by totaling 10 kills while hitting at a .375 clip and added 14 digs and three blocks in a 3-0 victory against Clarion. Southeast: Karleigh Lutz (Jr.) West Chester (OH) Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley Lutz played a role in four wins for the Golden Rams this week, including three conference victories. In the four matches, the junior provided 55 kills, 29 digs, four service aces, and a block for West Chester. Lutz led the squad in kills in every contest, except for East Stroudsburg, where she tied her teammate Amy Kovacs with 13 for the team-high. On senior day against Kutztown, Lutz registered 16 kills and five digs for a 3-0 sweep. The Cumberland Valley product helped West Chester clinch a spot in the PSAC quarterfinals this upcoming week. Central: Annie Goerl (Sr.) Shippensburg (OH) Hummelstown, Pa. / Lower Dauphin Goerl became just the sixth Shippensburg University volleyball player in history to join the prestigious 1,000 kills / 1,000 digs club, with 18 kills and 17 digs while hitting .283 while beating Lock Haven in four sets...she had two double-doubles in three matches this week, SU went 2-1...against Ville, Goerl led the Raiders with 14 kills, adding nine digs and hitting .257...Goerl capped off a sensational week with a season-high 20 kills and hitting .179 to go along with 11 digs at UPJ... Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week: Eric Usbeck Bloomsburg (Sr. / Free / Fly / Breast) Lake Ariel, Pa. / Wallenpaupack He is still #1 in the conference in the 50 free and 100 breast and #1 in 4 out of 5 relays. His breast and free times are ranked in the top 10 nationally (3rd and 9th respectively) and his four relays are also ranked nationally (2 in the top 10, plus 2 in the top 20). Of the nine non-exhibition races he has swam, he has won six times, including a perfect 4-for-4 against West Chester in the Huskies' first win over the Golden Rams since 1989. She has PSAC qualifying times in 50 free, 100 free, 200 free and 500 free. The sophomore helped IUP to three dual meet wins over Shippensburg, Edinboro and Saint Vincent *vs. Shippensburg - won 200 free, second in 100 free *vs. Edinboro - won 200 free and 100 free *vs. Saint Vincent - won 50 free and 500 free Men's Basketball: Eastern Division Athlete of the Week Matt Tamanosky Mansfield (Jr. / F) Camp Hill, Pa. / Cumberland Valley Tamanosky connected on an incredible 80% (16-20) of shots to average 20.0 points at the Virginia State Tip-Off Classic this weekend ... the junior went 9-of-10 from the field on Friday to score a career-high 23 points in a 66-60 loss to St. Augustine's of the CIAA ... on Saturday, Tamanosky went 7-10 from the floor for a game-high 17 points as Mansfield knocked-off defending CIAA Champion and host Virginia State on its own floor ... Virginia State received votes in the preseason national poll and is ranked third in the Atlantic Region. Men's Basketball: Eastern Division Freshman of the Week Amir Hinton Lock Haven (Fr. / G) Philadelphia, Pa. / Abington Amir Hinton of the Lock Haven University men’s basketball team led LHU to a 2-0 weekend at the Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic hosted by Shippensburg University. Against Penn State Fayette Hinton scored 21 points, shooting 10-17 from the field. He also finished with seven rebounds, four of which were offensive, and five assists. In game two Hinton dropped 24 points, going 10-19 from the field. Hinton shot 40% from the three-point line and he added five steals in the game. Hinton is second in the conference in points/game and leads the conference in steals. Men's Basketball: Western Division Athlete of the Week A.J. Leahey Pitt.-Johnstown (Sr. / F) Lilly, Pa. / Penn Cambria Leahey averaged 22.5 points in a pair of contests over the weekend. The senior dropped 19 points, scooped seven rebounds, dished out six assists and swatted a shot in a game against Urbana Friday. On Saturday, he produced a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds while dishing out three assists. He shot 49% from the field and knocked down six three-pointers in UPJ's win against Lincoln (Pa.). Men's Basketball: Western Division Freshman of the Week Malik Miller IUP (Fr. / G) Farrell, Pa. / Farrell Miller averaged 12.5 points and 3.0 assists in helping 24th-ranked IUP to pair of season-opening wins over Lincoln (101-82) and Urbana (91-74). The freshman shot 53.8 percent (7-13) from the field and 90.0 percent (9-10) from the foul line. He scored 14 points in 22 minutes off the bench against Lincoln; eent 4-8 from the field and 4-4 from the line with three assists and a steal. Miller scored 11 points the next night against Urbana, going 3-5 from the field and 4-5 from the foul line with three assists. Women's Basketball: Eastern Division Athlete of the Week Alex Heck Kutztown (Gr. / F) Willo Grove, Pa. / Archbishop Wood Heck averaged 25.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in Kutztown's 1-1 season-opening weekend in W. Va. She shot 65.5 percent from the field, .813 from the free-throw line while adding two assists per game. In her first career game as a Golden Bear, Heck, a graduate transfer, poured in not only a game-high but also a career-high 25 points in just 27 minutes against Charleston on Saturday. She shot 9-14 from the field and made seven of her eight free throw attempts. Against West Virginia State Sunday, she scored a season-high 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with four assists and two blocks. Women's Basketball: Eastern Division Freshman of the Week Miamuna Kenneh Lock Haven (Fr. / F) Coatesville, Pa. / Collegium Charter Kenneh helped pace the Bald Eagles to a 1-1 record at the Fairmont State Tournament hosted by Fairmont University. In their first game against Concord she recorded 8 points and 11 rebounds in only 15 minutes of play. She was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. In LHU’s second game against Fairmont State, Kenneh had 15 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. She went 7-8 from the free throw line and 9 of her 10 rebounds were offensive. Kenneh currently is third in the conference in rebounds/game. Women's Basketball: Western Division Athlete of the Week Miki Glenn California (Sr. / G) Bridgeport, W. Va. / Bridgeport Glenn averaged 23.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game over the weekend, as the Vulcans opened the season with a pair of wins at a MEC/PSAC Crossover Challenge hosted by Mercyhurst. She shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the floor and also converted 85.7 percent (18-of-21) from the free-throw line. Glenn opened the year with 24 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 74-59 victory on Friday against Notre Dame (Ohio). The following day, the West Virginia native finished with 23 points, three assists and two steals in a 92-50 win over West Liberty, which was a rematch from last year’s NCAA Tournament. Women's Basketball: Western Division Freshman of the Week Brook Hinderliter Slippery Rock (Fr. / G) Seminole, Pa. / Redbank Valley Freshman guard Brooke Hinderliter began her career by leading Slippery Rock to a pair of wins last weekend at the CIAA-PSAC Challenge. In two games, Hinderliter averaged 13.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game while shooting a stellar 60 percent (9-for-15) from the field overall and 80 percent (8-for-10) from the free throw line. In her first collegiate game Hinderliter scored a team-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field in addition to a 6-for-7 effort from the free throw line while grabbing four rebounds and passing out two assists to lead SRU to an 80-79 win at Johnson C. Smith. No freshman in the PSAC scored more than 18 points in a game over the opening weekend. She followed that performance up with an eight-point, four-rebound, one-assist effort in The Rock’s 67-58 victory against Fayetteville State. Wrestler of the Week: Corey Hazel Lock Haven (R-Fr.) Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley Hazel has bolted off to an 8-0 start while capturing a pair of tournament wins in the process to start the 2016-17 campaign. He started the season with a 5-0 mark in winning the Clarion Open on November 6. The redshirt freshman registered four decisions, including a 5-4 victory in the championship bout, and also posted a 17-2 technical fall in the semifinals. Hazel followed up that title by grabbing three more wins to snare the top spot at the Journeyman Collegiate Classic in Troy, N.Y. He notched three decisions, besting opponents from Ohio State, North Carolina and Buffalo, respectively. Football: Eastern Division Offensive Athlete of the Week Mike Class West Chester (So. / RB) Souderton, Pa. / Pennridge Class paced the WCU offense with 118 yards on the ground while leading the Golden Rams to their sixth consecutive wins. The sophomore averaged 7.9 yards per touch and scored on a three-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Football: Eastern Division Defensive Athlete of the Week Jordan Harper Shippensburg (Jr. / DB) Severn, Md. / Meade Harper posted a team-high 10 tackles, including a TFL. The junior intercepted a pass while SU claimed a 30-21 victory against Seton Hill. Football: Eastern Division Special Teams Athlete of the Week Billy Deane Shippensburg (Jr. / K/P) Ashburn, Va. / Broad Run Deane impressed by pinning Seton Hill inside the 20 on five different occasions. The junior recorded a pair of punts that traveled more than 50 yards. Deane nailed a 34-yard field goal late in the second quarter to put the Red Raiders up by 16, 30-14. Football: Western Division Offensive Athlete of the Week Don King III Slippery Rock (Sr. / QB) Dallas, Texas / Waxahachie King had one of the best games for any QB in PSAC history Saturday, throwing for SRU records of 527 yards and 7 TDs on just 38 total attempts. The 527 yards are the fourth most in the country in a game this year and he is the only QB in the league to need less than 47 attempts to hit 500 yards passing ... His 527 yards are the eighth most in PSAC history in a single-game and break an SRU record of 502 that stood since 1992 ... His 7 TD passes are the most in the PSAC this year and the second most in the nation in a single-game ... they break the former record of 6 at SRU from 2013 ... The 7 TD passes are the 4th most in a single-game in PSAC history ... He finished the day 28-of-38 for 527 yards with 7 TD Football: Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week Luke Hrapchak California (Jr. / LB) Fairmont, W. Va. / Fairmont Senior Hrapchak was named MVP of the PSAC Championship on Saturday after leading a defensive unit that nearly recorded a shutout against Kutztown in a 49-7 victory to capture the league title. He finished with a game-high 15 tackles (11 solo), 1.5 TFL, 1.0 sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and two pass break-ups in the win. The Golden Bears were held scoreless until the final minute of the game and finished with only 53 rushing yards, which was almost 200 yards less than their season average. Football: Western Division Special Teams Athlete of the Week Ta'Nauz Gregory Edinboro (Fr. / WR) Erie, Pa. / Cahedral Prep Gregory returned 2 punts for 66 yards, with a 70-yard return for a touchdown. Previously this year had returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. Also had 5 receptions for 66 yards and a TD (34 yards) in the game.
