California Recap
Lock Haven, Pa. - The 2015 PSAC Volleyball Championship field has been set. The final bracket is comprised of the top four finishers from both the PSAC East and the PSAC West Division.
The top-seed in the East is Pitt-Johnstown. The Lady Cats posted a PSAC-best 19-3 record within the conference this year and won the PSAC East after finishing second the past two seasons.
UPJ will face Lock Haven in the first round. LHU finished in fourth place in the PSAC East, but defeated Pitt-Johnstown 3-2 on November 3.
The winner of that matchup will face the winner of the Clarion and Gannon. The Golden Eagles and the Lady Knights finished the year with identical 15-7 PSAC records, but Clarion will host the bout due to the tiebreaker. Clarion’s Gabrielle Olson leads the PSAC in hitting percentage (.378), while Gannon’s Hannah Kren is second in kills per set (4.08)
In the other half of the bracket, the top seed from the PSAC West, Edinboro, will face the fourth seed, California. The Vulcans were the fourth seed last year and went on to win the PSAC Tournament, sweeping top-seeded Clarion in the first round.
The Fighting Scots went 18-4 in PSAC play this year after going 12-10 last season and missing the conference tournament. Cal and Edinboro split the two meeting this year, with California winning the most recent clash on the final day of the regular season.
The other matchup in that side of the bracket will be Shippensburg and West Chester. Shippensburg has won six straight matches coming into postseason play, including a 3-1 win over West Chester. The Golden Rams have won six of their last seven matches, only falling to the Raiders. In those six wins, WCU only lost one set and has victories over tournament teams Lock Haven and Pitt-Johnstown.
All of these contests will take place on Tuesday, November 17, at 7 p.m. The semifinals and championship game of the tournament will be on November 20 and 21 and will be hosted by the highest remaining seed out of the PSAC East.
