PSAC Athletes of the Week - 10/25 Sunday, October 25, 2015 12:30 PM Football: Eastern Division Offensive Athlete of the Week Chad Barton Kutztown (Sr. / QB) Hollidaysburg, Pa. / Hollidaysburg Barton posted the second five-touchdown game of his career and finished with 321 passing yards on 26-of-36 passing in KU's victory over ESU. Barton tossed his 50th career TD pass and now trails Kyle Spotts by one for third all-time in program history. Barton moved into fifth at KU in career pass attempts (692) and remains fifth in yardage (5,147) and completions (408). Barton also ran for a 32-yard touchdown on Saturday. Football: Eastern Division Defensive Athlete of the Week George Shipp West Chester (So. / DE) Harleysville, Pa. / North Penn Shipp led West Chester in tackles, with six, including a pair of sacks and a forced fumble, while also recording a safety in the Golden Rams' 33-22 win over Bloomsburg. Shipp was part of a defense that limited the Huskies' ground game to 75 yards and just 181 yards of total offense. In all, WCU's front seven registered eight QB hurries, four sacks and pressured Kelly into throwing three INTs. Football: Eastern Division Special Teams Athlete of the Week Andrew Smith Shippensburg (Sr. / WR) Haymarket, Va. / Battlefield Smith only had two returns, but made them count. He returned a punt 36 yards down to the half-yard line and also returned a kickoff 53 yards. He had 172 all-purpose yards on the day. Football: Western Division Offensive Athlete of the Week Lenny Williams IUP (Sr. / QB) McKees Rocks, Pa. / Sto-Rox Williams' 504 total yards broke an IUP single game record (Rich Ingold, 452 vs. Lehigh, 1985). His 504 total yards is also the most of any PSAC West player and second most in the conference (Matt Soltes, 616) this year. His 364 passing yards is ninth most in school history, and a season-high. The 22 completions and 33 attempts are also season-highs. It was his third straight game of 100-plus rushing yards (479 yards, 159.7 ypg during span). Football: Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week Mike Zanders Gannon (Sr. / DB) Charlotte, N.C. / Hopewell Zanders led a Gannon defensive unit with eight tackles and two interceptions during a 43-28 victory at Seton Hill last Saturday. With Gannon leading 16-14 in the second quarter and Seton Hill in Gannon territory, Zanders intercepted a pass at the Golden Knight 18-yard line with 4:56 remaining in the first half. Later in the game, Zanders intercepted another pass and returned it 43 yards for a touchdown with 38 seconds left to clinch a 43-28 victory. He has four interceptions during the last three games after having zero in the first five contests. He moved past Jon Miller (1994-97) and into sixth place all-time at Gannon with his ninth career interception. Football: Western Division Special Teams Athlete of the Week Mitch Thomas Edinboro (Fr. / CB) Buffalo, N.Y. / Canisius Thomas returned a punt 47 yards for a touchdown against Mercyhurst. It was first punt return for TD by Scot since Ben Eisel's 69-yarder against SRU in 2013. He returned 4 punts for 44 yards and had eight tackles while starting at cornerback. Field Hockey: Athletes of the Week Olivia Hershey Millersville (Jr./F) Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township Olivia Hershey scored two goals against No. 4 Kutztown, helping the Marauders to a 4-1 win. The score gave her five goals in the last seven games. She led the team with eight shots and four shots on goal in the game. Ally Roth East Stroudsburg (Sr./F) Scotrun, Pa./ Pocono Mountain East Roth helped ESU (13-3, 8-1) secure a top-2 seed in the PSAC Tournament with both goals in a 2-1 win at Kutztown on Saturday. Roth scored the game winner with 3:21 remaining in regulation. The Warriors can gain PSAC No. 1 seed with win vs Slippery Rock on Saturday. Roth ranks third in the PSAC with 16 goals and 33 points. She leads active PSAC players with 69 career goals and 161 points. Roth was the 2014 PSAC Offensive Athlete of the Year, she's a two time All-PSAC First Team honoree, and a two time NFHCA All-America First Team selection. Men's Soccer: Athlete of the Week Lucas Exner California (Fr/GK) Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium Exner recorded a pair of shutouts last week, as the Vulcans clinched a berth in the PSAC Tournament for the fourth time in five years. He tallied three saves while facing nine shots on Wednesday in a 1-0 victory at Pitt-Johnstown. Exner closed the week by posting seven saves in a 4-0 win over Shippensburg on Saturday, which secured a post-season appearance for Cal U, which has already posted its most wins since 2012. Women's Soccer: Athlete of the Week Shea Neal East Stroudsburg (Jr./M) Barto, Pa/ Christopher Dock Neal scored 2 goals last week for ESU (8-6-1). She scored the game-winning goal on header with 18 seconds left in 2-1 win vs Bloomsburg on Wednesday, while also scoring the game-tying goal early in 2nd half in eventual 2-1 loss at Edinboro on Saturday. Neal leads ESU with 6 goals, 2 assists this season. She is a two time All-PSAC 1st team, 2014 PSAC Tournament MVP, 2014 NSCAA All-America 1st team selection, two time All-Region selection in ESU's midfield. Volleyball: Eastern Division Athlete of the Week Grace Dawson Millersville (Fr. / S) Collegeville, Pa. / Pope John Paul II Freshman setter Grace Dawson helped Millersville to a 3-0 week that included two PSAC East wins. Dawson recorded double-doubles in all three matches, averaging 32.3 assists and 15.7 digs per match. Dawson also tallied 10 service aces in three matches, including a season-high seven against Kutztown. Against Elizabethtown, Dawson posted 31 assists and 10 digs. She followed that effort by posting 31 assists, seven service aces, a season-high 22 digs and four blocks against Kutztown. In the final match of the week, Dawson posted 35 assists to go with 15 digs and two service aces. Volleyball: Western Division Athlete of the Week Sydney Trathen Edinboro (So. / S/Opp.) Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Stow Munroe Falls Trathen totaled 18 kills and 99 assists in a pair of conference victories over the weekend. She averaged 12.375 assists per set, which is nearly two assists above her average. She currently leads the PSAC is assists per set, while Edinboro in on top in the PSAC West, with a conference record of 14-1. The Fighting Scots have one 12 straight matches. Men's Swimming: Athlete of the Week Alex Plimpton IUP (Sr./Fly/Free) Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford Plimpton has PSAC qualifying times in the 500 free (4:45.20) and 1000 free (9:54.68) He is a four-time winner in two dual meets. Plimpton won both the 500 and 1000 free at both meets. He posted the fastest time on USAswimming.com in the 500 free at Shippensburg (4:45.20) Women's Swimming: Athlete of the Week Kira Goin California (Fr./ Butterfly/Free) Pointe-Claire, Quebec Dawson College 50 Freestyle - 25.33 (PSAC) - 1st/10 100 Butterfly - 59.40 (PSAC) - 1st/7 Goin captured wins in both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly while making her college debut over the weekend. She posted a time of 59.40 seconds in the 100 butterfly to win the event by over three seconds and broke the pool record by nearly nine-tenths of a second. Goin claimed the individual victory in the 50 freestyle by just under two-tenths of a second after touching the wall in 25.33 seconds. The Quebec native also was the second leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay, which posted time of a time of 3:47.29 to win the event by over 4.5 seconds.
