PSAC Announces Winners of Top Team GPA Awards
Lock Haven, Pa. – Eight different Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference institutions have claimed Top Team GPA Awards for the 2013-14 academic year, announced today by PSAC Commissioner Steve Murray. Now in their third year of existence, the awards are issued across 21 sports.
The awards, released at the conclusion of the academic year, honor the teams with the top cumulative team grade point average in each of the sponsored sports within the PSAC. The league hosts 23 championships, however, for the award purposes, indoor and outdoor track & field are counted as a single sport.
Seton Hill led all schools with seven of its teams – women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s golf, men’s soccer, women’s tennis, women’s track and field, and wrestling – earning top team GPAs among their sports groups. Gannon laid claim to four sports including men’s cross country, football, softball and women’s swimming. Clarion secured three sports, while California and Mercyhurst captured two each. Edinboro, IUP, and Slippery Rock each clinched one apiece.
Of the winning totals, 13 teams registered a GPA of at least 3.4, two better than a year ago. Clarion’s volleyball team’s 3.789 average was the league’s highest cumulative GPA, closely followed by a 3.722 average held by Seton Hill women’s tennis. Six teams are repeat winners from 2012-13, with five teams earning the award for three-consecutive years.
Following the release of the 2012-13 cumulative GPAs, 11 league institutions recorded an increase in cumulative GPAs. Of the 285 teams in the PSAC during 2012-13, 151 (53%) increased their team GPAs in 2013-14. Overall, the average GPA for the entire PSAC increased by .03 from 3.06 to 3.09 (3.086).
Seton Hill held the institution high GPA average of 3.327, while 12 institutions boosted their cumulative GPA from last year. Seton Hill had four teams above the 3.5 threshold to lead 18 teams across the PSAC that established a 3.5 or better cumulative GPA.
