CALIFORNIA EARNS EIGHTH STRAIGHT PSAC TITLE
 
West Chester, Pa. – California blanked IUP 5-0 to clinch the program's eighth straight PSAC women's tennis title on Friday afternoon in West Chester.
 
The Vulcans' Lucie Sipkova and Lucie Rey defeated IUP's Tanya Timko and Erika Schnaas 9-8 at the No. 1 doubles flight. Ramona Czakon and Mariela Sarinana took down their No. 2 doubles opponents 8-2, while Kiefer Shaw and Jesse Burrell earned an 8-6 No. 3 doubles victory to give California a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
 
Czakon took a demanding 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, and Shaw sealed the win for California with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 4 singles.

Following the championship match, Sipkova was named the PSAC Championships' Most Valuable Player for the second-straight year.
 
California has now won 10 PSAC titles in program history with its last four coming against IUP. Bloomsburg is the only other program to hold as many conference titles. The Vulcans have not lost a match against a PSAC opponent since the 2005-06 season and rank 12th in the nation and first in the Atlantic Region.
 
With the conference title California has automatically qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament selection show will air on NCAA.com on April 29 at 8:30 p.m. IUP ranks second, Mercyhurst is fourth, and Slippery Rock is sixth in the latest regional rankings.
 
 

 
EDINBORO CAPTURES ITS FIRST PSAC TITLE SINCE 1978
 
West Chester, Pa. – Edinboro earned a 5-3 victory over top-seeded Kutztown on Friday to claim the program's first PSAC men's tennis championship title since 1978.
 
The Fighting Scots earned a pair of doubles victories from the No. 2 and 3 flights. Bruno Borja, named the PSAC Championships' Most Valuable Player, teamed with Brandon Romain for an 8-4 doubles win, while James Cooper and Thomas Pellegrino downed their Kutztown foes 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
 
Amir Talab picked-up a 6-2, 6-1 No. 4 singles win, and Romain downed his opponent 6-0, 6-1. Borja clinched the team title for the Fighting Scots with a 7-5, 0-8, 7-5 No. 2 singles victory.
 
Edinboro has now captured four PSAC titles in program history with the most recent coming in 1978. The Scots also won the crown in 1974 and shared the title with East Stroudsburg in 1964.  
 
Edinboro currently sits seventh in the NCAA Atlantic Region, while Kutztown is ranked fourth. With the conference title Edinboro has automatically qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament selection show will air on NCAA.com on April 29 at 8:00 p.m.




PSAC WOMEN'S SEMIFINALS
 
 
IUP to Play California in PSAC Championship

 
West Chester, Pa. – No. 2 IUP defeated No. 1 Bloomsburg 5-0 in the 2014 PSAC Women's Tennis Championship Semifinals on Thursday afternoon in West Chester.
 
Tanya Timko and Erika Schnaas defeated their No. 1 doubles foes 8-1, while Alanna McFail and Sophie Butland handed their Bloomsburg No. 2 doubles opponents an 8-1 loss. Roxana Yeh and Rachel Wood clinched the doubles sweep for the Vulcans with an 8-2 win at the No. 3 doubles flight.
 
Timko also won at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Maddie Graziani, while McFail defeated Erin Reitenauer 6-1, 6-1 to earn the win for IUP.
 
IUP will now face No. 1 California on Friday, April 18 at noon for the PSAC Championship title. Their meeting tomorrow will mark the fourth straight time the teams have battled each other for the PSAC crown, with California winning the last three. Earlier this spring California defeated IUP 8-1. 
 
 
California to Play IUP in PSAC Championship

California will now face No. 2 IUP on Friday, April 18 at noon for the PSAC Championship title. Kutztown to Play Edinboro in PSAC Championship


West Chester, Pa. – No. 1 Kutztown shutout No. 4 West Chester 5-0 in the 2014 PSAC Men's Tennis Championship Semifinals on Thursday afternoon in West Chester.
 
Rushi Amin and Vaurn Desai got things started for the Golden Bears with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while Rich Lichtenwalner and Ben Nace earned a 9-8 (7-3) win at No. 2 doubles. Matthew Maguire and Ken Beebe gave Kutztown the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
 
Amin defeated Jared Howat 6-1, 6-2 at the top singles flight, while Maguire clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles.
 
Kutztown, the defending PSAC Champion, will now play No. 2 Edinboro in the PSAC Championship on Friday, April 18 at 12 p.m.  The Golden Bears defeated Edinboro 5-2 in last season's championship game and 6-3 earlier this season.
 
Edinboro to Play Kutztown in PSAC Championship 
 
West Chester, Pa. – No. 2 Edinboro handed No. 3 Mercyhurst a 5-1 loss in the 2014 PSAC Men's Tennis Championship Semifinals on Thursday afternoon in West Chester.
 
Edinboro's Matias Aignasse and Juan Estepa won 8-2 at the No. 1 doubles flight, while James Cooper and Thomas Pellegrino won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
 
Aignasse prevailed 6-4, 7-5 over Travis Beck at No. 1 singles, and Estepa clinched a 6-1, 6-3 No. 3 singles victory. Brandon Romain earned the fifth and final victory for the Fighting Scots at No. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Ross Molinaro.
 
Edinboro has now advanced to the PSAC Championship game for the second straight year and will face the defending PSAC Champion Kutztown on Friday, April 18 at 12 p.m. Kutztown defeated Edinboro 6-3 earlier this spring, Edinboro's lone PSAC loss on the season.




PSAC WOMEN'S QUARTERFINALS

IUP Advances to Semifinals
 
Indiana, Pa. – No. 2 IUP ousted No. 3 Mercyhurst in the 2014 PSAC Women's Tennis Quarterfinals on Monday with a 5-1 victory in order to advance to the Semifinals.
 
The Crimson Hawks will travel to West Chester to face No. 1 Bloomsburg on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
 
IUP swept doubles play with Tanya Timko and Erika Schnaas earning a dominating 8-1 win over Caroline Bristol and Sarah Baich at No. 1 doubles. Sophie Butland and Alanna McFail won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Ranvita Mahto and Rachel Wood won No. 3 doubles 8-4.
 
Butland won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Rachel Wood sealed the win for the Crimson Hawks with a 7-6 (12-10), 6-3 No. 5 singles victory. 
 
With the win IUP improves to 15-8, while Mercyhurst concludes its season with a 12-5 overall mark.
 
 
West Chester Advances to Semifinals

West Chester, Pa. – No. 2 West Chester handed No. 3 Kutztown a 5-1 loss in the 2014 PSAC Women's Tennis Quarterfinals in order to advance to the semifinal round.
 
The Golden Rams will host No. 1 California in the PSAC Semifinals on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
 
West Chester's Maddy Shaak and Nicole Fahringer downed Hannah Pipkin and Tori Zander 8-6 to earn a No. 1 doubles victory. Chelsea Davis and Alyssa Konas won at No. 2 doubles to give West Chester a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
 
Fahringer took a 6-3, 6-1 No. 2 singles victory, while Branigan won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Jami Dumler clinched a No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-2 victory to win the match for the Golden Rams.
 
West Chester is now 10-9 on the season, while Kutztown caps its season with a 9-7 overall mark. 




CHAMPIONSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

Lock Haven, Pa. - The fields have been set for next week's PSAC team tennis championships. The women's tournament begins on Monday with a pair of quarterfinal matches hosted by the higher seeds of each contest. Both the men's and women's semifinals will be held on Thursday, April 17, at West Chester, while the championship matches will be on Friday, April 18, at West Chester. 

In the men's semifinals, No. 1 Kutztown will battle No. 4 West Chester, and No. 2 Edinboro will face No. 3 Mercyhurst. Both semifinal matches are slated for a 12 p.m. start time, with the championship and consolation matches scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday.

In the women's tournament, No. 1 seeds California and Bloomsburg each received a bye into the semifinals as the divisional champions. The Vulcans have now earned 10 straight West titles, while Bloomsburg has earned an undefeated regular season conference record for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
 
On Monday, No. 2 IUP and will host No. 3 Mercyhurst in a rematch of the 2013 quarterfinal round, while No. 2 West Chester will host No. 3 Kutztown in the other quarterfinal.
 
The winner of IUP and Mercyhurst will play Bloomsburg in the semifinals on Thursday, while the West Chester and Kutztown winner will play California. The semifinal matches are scheduled for 3 p.m. at West Chester, and Friday's championship and consolation matches are slated for a 12 p.m. start.
 
A season ago California's women captured their seventh straight PSAC Women's' Tennis Championship title, while Kutztown's men earned the program's 11th overall conference crown.
