Cal U finishes ninth at championships

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 18) – Behind a nine-over 81 from freshman Cara Vanderham (Innisfail, Alberta/Innisfail) and senior Inez del Rosario (Rizal, Philippines/La Salle College Antipolo) on Saturday afternoon, the California University of Pennsylvania women's golf team finished ninth in the team standings at the NCAA National Championships.

The Vulcans carded a 42-over 330 in the fourth round to finish the tournament just one stroke back of eighth place with a 139-over 1291 (327-314-320-330). Lynn (Fla.) captured its first national title since 1997 after edging four-time, defending-National Champion Nova Southeastern (Fla.) in the final round. The Fighting Knights posted a 17-over 305 on Saturday to win the event by three strokes with a 35-over 1187 (301-288-293-305), while the Sharks finished with a 21-over 309 in the final round to close the tournament at 38-over 1190 (292-294-295-309). Barry (Fla.) remained in third place at 42-over 1194 (302-294-298-300) after carding the best score in the fourth round at 12-over 300.

Senior Maria Lopez (Bogota, Colombia/English School) posted a 10-over 82 (44-38) on Saturday to finish 43rd overall with a 31-over 319 (82-77-78-82). She was at nine-over after 10 holes before playing the last eight holes of the round at one-over, highlighted by a birdie on the par-four fifth. Lopez played at the NCAA National Championships in each of her four years with the program.

Fellow senior Kim Thomas (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) finished in 48th place at 36-over 324 (77-79-82-86) after carding a 14-over 86 (46-40) in the fourth round.  She was 12-over through 11 holes before managing par on five of the next seven holes. Thomas previously shot a combined 12-over in the first two rounds while in Florida.

Vanderham posted a nine-over 81 (41-40) for the second-straight day to finish the tournament tied for 49th overall at 38-over 326 (87-77-81-81). She played her first 10 holes at six-over before collecting par on six of the last eight holes. Vanderham was at 15-over after the first day before shooting a combined 23-over in the last three rounds.

del Rosario closed the tournament in 55th place at 40-over 328 (87-81-79-81) following a nine-over 81 (42-39) on Saturday. She collected a pair of birdies in the fourth round and played the last eight holes at two-over. Junior Marine Verchere (Bourg-en-Bresse, France/Carriat) posted a 15-over 87 (43-44) in the final round and finished play in Florida tied for 63rd overall at 46-over 334 (81-84-82-87).

Barry sophomore Nancy Vergara captured the individual title by one stroke following a three-over 75 in the last round to finish the four-round tournament at three-over 291 (71-72-73-75).

Daytona Beach, Fla. - The California women's golf team remains in ninth place after day three at the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla. 

The Vulcans posted a team score of 320 on the day to combine with their previous days' totals of 314 and 327 for a combined three-day score of 961. Cal is just two strokes behind No. 8 Northeastern State who has a score of 959. 

Maria Lopez led the Vulcans on day three shooting a 78 (+6) and holds a team low 237 score to be tied for 42nd in the invdividual standings.

Daytona Beach, Fla. – Behind a five-over 77 from both freshman Cara Vanderham and senior Maria Lopez, the California University of Pennsylvania women's golf team moved into ninth place in the team standings on Thursday afternoon during the second round of the NCAA National Championships.

The Vulcans shot a 26-over 314 on Thursday to move up one spot to ninth place with a 65-over 641 (327-314). Nova Southeastern (Fla.), the four-time defending-National Champion, maintained its lead in the team standings after carding a six-over 294 in the second round and stands at 10-over 586 (292-294) midway through the event.

Daytona Beach, Fla. - On the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. the Vulcans of California women’s golf team submitted a team score of 327 in the first day of competition in the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championship.
 
The par 72-course gave the Vulcans a combined +39 on day one for 10th place, with Nova Southeastern leading the 12-team tournament with just a +4 (292) mark.
 
Kim Thomas posted Cal’s best score of the day with a 77 (+5) to tie her for 25th in the individual rankings. Marine Verchere isn’t far behind with a +9 on day one and PSAC Champion Maria Lopez holds a +10.
 
The NCAA appearance marks Cal’s fourth-straight, as the Vulcans are trying to top their program-best finish of sixth place earned a year ago with two individuals breaking into the top 15.
