Kutztown Story (with photos)

Kutztown fell for the second time in as many days to Valdosta State on Saturday morning by an 8-2 score as the Golden Bears were eliminated from the national championship in the national semifinals. The Golden Bears, who won their first two games of the softball World Series, lost to the eventual national champions as Vadosta State went on to top UC-San Diego later in the day to win the national title.

Kutztown fell to Valdosta State 3-1 on Friday afternoon in its first attempt to reach the national championship game. The loss sets up a rematch between the same two teams on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. The winner will advance to the national championship game on Saturday afternoon.

Samantha Derr threw a 12-inning, complete-game, three-hit shutout and also provided the game-winning single in the bottom of the 12th that scored Kelly Fitzgerald as Kutztown came out on top in a marathon extra-inning contest against UC-San Diego on Thursday, 1-0. The win brings the Golden Bears to within two wins of a national championship. Kutztown will now play on Friday at 3:00 p.m., when it faces the winner of the Valdosta State-Southern Connecticut State game. One win puts the Golden Bears into the national championship game. If Kutztown were to lose, it would have a rematch with wither VSU or SCSU with a championship game berth on the line.

Kutztown Story

Kutztown, facing a 1-0 deficit in the best-of-three Super Regional after losing Game 1 on Friday afternoon, needed to win two games on Saturday to keep its season alive and the Golden Bears did just that as they topped West Virginia Wesleyan by scores of 1-0 and 5-1 to advance to the Division II Softball World Series. Mary Kociencki, who last month was named the PSAC East Freshman of the Year, pitched complete games in both contests to lead Kutztown, which advances to its first Softball World Series in school history.

Kutztown advanced out of its sub-regional tournament last weekend by winning all three of its games against Winston-Salem State, West Virginia State, and defending Super Regional champion and PSAC champion IUP.

The Golden Bears will now host the Super Regional this Friday and Saturday and they will host WVIAC champion West Virginia Wesleyan, which won the other sub-regional tournament that was held at California as they topped Bloomsburg, California and Lock Haven in the regional championship game to advance.

Game 1 of the Super Regional will be on Friday at 1:00 p.m., with Game 2 slated for Saturday at 1:00 p.m. If necessary, the deciding third game will be immediately following Game 2 on Saturday.
