Shippensburg Men Repeat as PSAC Indoor Track & Field Champions

Edinboro, Pa. - The Red Raiders of Shippensburg dominated the PSAC Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships as they captured their second straight conference title at the Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Dome on the campus of Edinboro University.
Shippensburg, which had led by over 40 points following Saturday, won by an even larger margin, accumulating 213.50 points to top second place Slippery Rock by 129.5 points. The title is the fifth all-time for the Red Raider men, tying Lock Haven for the most indoor titles in PSAC history.
East Stroudsburg’s Ian Melhorn took home the track MVP for the championship event while teammate Dan Johnson claimed the field MVP. The overall tournament MVP was awarded to Stephen Schelander of Shippensburg.
In the heptathlon, Dan Johnson of East Stroudsburg took first place with 4,866 total points. Hans Lubich from Slippery Rock compiled 4,700 points for second , while Stephen Grib of Bloomsburg finished in third place by a single point as he scored 4,699.
Steve Waithe took first place in the triple jump for Shippensburg with a mark of 14.80 meters. Brandon Ford of IUP and Tyler Brooks of Kutztown finished second (14.73m) and third (14.22), respectively. Both Waithe and Ford posted NCAA provisional marks.
The Red Raiders grabbed the top two finishers in the mile with Stephen Schelander in first (14:17.54) and Bryan Beegle (14:17.98) in second. Clint Keller of IUP took third with a time of 14:18.37.
Sophomore Herman Kirkland of Shippensburg took another first place for the Red Raiders, this time in the 60-meter dash. Kirkland finished in 6.83 while D.J. Chisom from Slippery Rock finished in 6.93. Both athletes' times were NCAA provisionals. Kemuel Wright of Cheyney finished third in 6.98.
Tom Kehl was yet another first place finisher for the Red Raiders. He finished with a time of 1:54.72 in the 800 meters with Rodney Rosario of Lock Haven in second with a time of 1:55.87. Kehl’s teammate and fellow freshman Bernard England finished third (1:56.00).
Dan Hedglin of Slippery Rock took first place in the 60-meter hurdles final with a time of 8.31 with Tyrek Nelson of Shippensburg in second (8.36). Khalid Guiden of Kutztown finished in third place with a time of 8.47.
Mansfield’s Justen Johnson finished first in the 400-meter dash with an NCAA provisional time of 48.54. Sean Harper of Lock Haven also posted an NCAA provisional mark to finish second in 48.62. Erick Brundidge of West Chester took third in 48.95.
Melhorn won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.96. Lock Haven’s Chris Jones took second place (22.20) while Greg Crawford of Kutztown finished third (22.36).
Bryan Beegle (8:34.37) and Stephen Schelander (8:35.46) of Shippensburg finished first and second, respectively, in the 3,000-meter run. James McBride from Millersville took third place (8:37.57).
In the shot put, senior Tyler Thomas of Lock Haven won with an NCAA provisional mark of 16.18m. Kyle Toms from Slippery Rock also earned an NCAA provisional mark with a throw of 15.99m for second. Freshman Ross Moreau of IUP (15.74m) took third.
East Stroudsburg’s Kyle Soden took first place in the high jump with a mark of 1.97m while California's Marcus Givan took second with a 1.97m jump. Johnson of East Stroudsburg took third (1.92m).
In the final event of the afternoon, both Lock Haven’s 4x400 meter relay team as well as East Stroudsburg’s team ran to NCAA provisional marks, running the relay in 3:16.72 and 3:16.97, respectively. Shippensburg finished a close third with a time of 3:18.28.
