Mechanicsburg, Pa. - More records were broken on Sunday night, the final one of the PSAC Swimming Championships, but the meet ended the same way it has for the last five years as the West Chester women captured their sixth straight PSAC title. The Golden Rams accumulated 684 points and won the title by 243 points over second place Clarion, which had 441 points. California was third with 412 while Gannon was fourth with 336.5.

West Chester's Kacie McNichol won the 1650 freestyle for the second straight year to start the night, coming in at 16:55.24 to break her own year-old PSAC championship record. Her time was also just under four seconds off the PSAC all-time mark, which is the longest-standing PSAC women's swimming record - set in 1986 by Bloomsburg's Joan Wojtowicz. That record is the only PSAC record that was set before 2005.

IUP's Jackie Hynson won two more events to make it two straight years that she won three individual events at the PSAC Championships. One night after winning the 100 butterfly, Hynson won both the 200 backstroke and 200 fly, swimming to PSAC meet records in both of those events. She broke her own championship mark in the 200 back, touching the wall in 1:59.60, which is just .15 of a second shy of her own PSAC all-time mark set last year. She also broke the PSAC meet record in the 200 fly with her swim of 2:01.84. Hynson is already the PSAC all-time record holder in the 200 fly.

Hynson's teammate, Allyson Mitidieri, also won her third event of the meet by coming in first in the 200 breaststroke. Mitidieri, who earlier in the meet won both the 200 and 400 IMs, won the 200 breast by over four seconds over the second place finisher. California's Melissa Gates also won her third event of the meet as she took first in the 100 free, winning in :49.73, which is a new PSAC all-time and championship record. It marked Gates' second such mark of the meet as she broke the all-time and championship records in the 50 free two nights ago.

To wrap up the meet, Gates also helped the California 400 free relay team win that event in a PSAC meet record time of 3:25.52, which was just .47 of a second shy of the all-time mark. Gates was named the MVP of the meet.

Saturday Night Results
Saturday Morning Prelim Results

Mechanicsburg, Pa. - West Chester's men and women both further lengthened their leads on Saturday at the PSAC Swimming Championships. Both will head into the final day of the meet with sizable leads as they look for their 14th and sixth straight titles, respectively.

IUP's Allyson Mitidieri won her second individual title of the weekend as she took first in the 400 IM one night after winning the 200 IM. It marked the second straight year that a Crimson Hawk won the 400 IM as teammate Jackie Hynson won it last year. Hynson, who won three individual events at last year's meet, made her individual debut at this year's meet as she won the 100 butterfly, just beating out West Chester's Leah Varvaro by .02 of a second.

Another Crimson Hawk swam to a record time in winning the men's 100 fly as Steve Long broke the PSAC all-time and championship record by touching the wall in :48.90. West Chester's Tommy Rhoads and Edinboro's Tony Romanini each captured their second individual titles of the meet as Rhoads took first in the 200 free a night after winning the 500 free while Romanini won the 100 backstroke a night after winning the 200 IM. On the women's side, a night after shattering the PSAC record in winning the 50 free, California's Melissa Gates won her second individual race of the meet by taking first in the 100 breaststroke.

Other winners from Saturday night were Shippensburg's Sean Minford in the men's 400 IM, California's Clarissa Enslin in the women's 200 free, West Chester Bogdan Grebenyuk in the men's 100 breast, and Clarion's Kayla Shull in the women's 100 back, which marked her third straight PSAC title in that event. Her time of :55.97 was just .41 of a second off of the PSAC meet record and was her best of her three championship swims in the event.

The Shippensburg women won the 800 free relay title while the West Chester men took the men's 800 free relay championship.

In the team standings, the West Chester women have 471 points to comfortably lead second place Clarion, which has 296. California is third with 279. The West Chester men have 528 points while Gannon is in second with 323. Edinboro and Clarion are not far out of second with 317 and 307 respective points.

Friday Night Results
Friday Morning Prelim Results

Mechanicsburg, Pa. - After racing out to relatively large leads on Thursday night after just two events, both the West Chester men and women extended their leads after Friday night's action as both now lead by over 100 points. However, despite the success of both Golden Ram squads, the spotlight on Friday night shone on California's Melissa Gates, whose time in winning the 50 freestyle was better than the national Division II record in that event.

After coming just .02 of a second shy of tying the NCAA D-II record in the morning prelims, Gates came in faster than the mark of :22.64, which was set by Drury's Eunate Garro in 2009, and won her first career PSAC 50 free title by touching the wall in :22.62, almost a full second in front of second place Kayla Shull of Clarion, who came in at :23.59. However, according to Division II rules, only records set at the NCAA Division II national meet at the end of the year can count as the official national record. Gates also swam the leadoff leg on California's winning 200 free relay team that finished in 1:34.31.

In other women's events, West Chester's Codyanne Murtaugh, who finished third in last night's 1000 free, captured the 500 free title. IUP's Allyson Mitidieri won the 200 IM while West Chester won the 400 medley relay.

In the men's 500 free, West Chester's Tommy Rhoads not only won the event for the second straight year, but he also broke a PSAC championship record that had stood for seven years by touching the wall in 4:29.76. Edinboro's Tony Romanini captured the title in the 200 IM while West Chester's Ryan Stahley beat out defending champion Joe Ward of Clarion by .26 of a second to win the 50 free. Stahley was also a part of West Chester's winning 200 free and 400 medley relay teams.

In the team standings, the West Chester women have 297 points and lead second place California by 134 points. The Vulcans are followed by Clarion in third and IUP in fourth. The West Chester men have 303 points and lead second place Edinboro by 119 points. Clarion and Gannon are next in third and fourth, respectively.

Thursday Results

Mechanicsburg, Pa. - Both of West Chester's relay teams captured first place in the men's and women's 200 medley relay events and individual Golden Rams also captured the titles in the men's and women's 1000 freestyle races to guide both the Golden Ram men's and women's team out to big leads on the first night of the PSAC Swimming Championship.

The women's team accumulated 121 points in the two events and leads second place Bloomsburg by 75 points. The men have 85 and lead second place Gannon by 36.

The Golden Ram women's 200 medley relay team edged out second place Edinboro by just .20 of a second in 1:45.55. The men's team of Calvin Starosta, David McCormick, Ryan Stahley and Alex Muraro set a new PSAC championship and overall record by winning in 1:31.31.

In the women's 1000 free, West Chester took the top three spots as Alexis Walley won in 10:12.20 and was followed by teammates Kacie McNichol and Codyanne Murtaugh. The trio was separated by just under six seconds from first to third place. West Chester also had the fifth and ninth place finishers, giving them half of the top 10. In the men's 1000 free, Jared Haley and Tommy Rhoads of West Chester distanced themselves from the field as both broke the PSAC championship record. Haley won in 9:22.98 while Rhoads, the 2010 PSAC champion in this event, took second in 9:24.83. The third place finisher, Bloomsburg's Brandon Sherbo, touched the wall in 9:35.60. Haley and Rhoads both broke the previous championship record of 9:26.52, which was just set last year.

Mechanicsburg, Pa. - Cumberland Valley High School will once again be the site of the PSAC Swimming Championships. This year will mark the 54th year of the PSAC men's championships and the 37th year of the women's championships. The 2012 PSAC Swimming Championships will be held from Thursday February 16 through February 19.

Starting this year, the meet will now get underway with the 200 medley relays on Thursday night beginning at 6:30 p.m. In previous years, only the 1000 freestyle was contested on the first night of the championships. The 1000 free will now follow the 200 medley relays on Thursday. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the morning preliminary heats will begin at 10:00 a.m. On Friday and Saturday, the nightly finals heats will begin at 6:00 p.m. On Sunday, the finals heats will begin shortly after 5:00 p.m. following the senior ceremony and the presentation of the PSAC Champion Scholar Awards. The complete meet schedule is listed below.

West Chester is once again the defending men's and women's champion. The Golden Ram men have won 13 consecutive championships dating back to 1999. Last year's title tied West Chester with Clarion for the most all-time championships with 24. However, the Golden Rams are still short of the all-time mark for most consecutive titles as Clarion holds that record with 19 straight from 1971-1989. The Golden Eagles are also the last team other than West Chester to win a championship, that coming in 1998 before the Golden Rams started on their current 13-year reign as PSAC champions. The Golden Rams and Golden Eagles appear to once again be the favorites in this year's meet. Only four individual champions from last year's meet return to defend their titles this season, and all four are from either Clarion or West Chester. Clarion sprinter Joe Ward returns to defend his titles in both the 50 and 100 free, while teammate Ben Appleby returns in the 200 free. West Chester's Tommy Rhoads (500 free) and Calvin Starosta (100 backstroke) return to defend their titles for the Golden Rams. Rhoads is the two-time defending champ in the 500 free and also won the 1000 free two years ago. Starosta is also the two-time defending champ in the 100 back.

The women's field is loaded with defending champions and PSAC record-holders, which should make for a very exciting championship. IUP's Jackie Hynson, last year's PSAC Women's Swimmer of the Year, returns as a defending event champion in three different events - the 200 back, 200 butterfly and the 400 IM. She is also the PSAC all-time and championship record holder in the 200 back and the all-time record holder in the 200 fly. California's Melissa Gates, who set the all-time PSAC record in the 50 free while winning the event at the NCAA championships last year, will look for her first PSAC individual title after finishing second in the 50 the last two years, second in the 100 last year and third in the 100 two years ago. Two of Gates' teammates in Clarissa Enslin (200 free) and Georgia Emert (500 free) will return to defend their individual titles. West Chester's Amelia Buckley is a two-event defending champion in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes while Clarion's Kayla Shull is a two-time defending champion in the 100 back. West Chester's Kacie McNichol, who set a championship record in winning the 1650 free last year, also returns to defend her title. Team-wise, West Chester is the five-time defending champion, while Clarion is the last team other than the Golden Rams to win a title - that coming in 2006. The Golden Eagles own the most all-time championships with 26 while West Chester is second with nine. IUP (1 title in 1999) is the only other team other than West Chester or Clarion to have won a PSAC women's swimming championship.

Adult tickets for the event will be $5 for preliminaries, $7 for finals or an all-session pass can be purchased for $35. Students from PSAC schools are admitted free with school-affiliated ID. Fees for non-PSAC students are $2 for each session and $10 for an all-session pass. Fans are encouraged to arrive at the pool early to ensure a seat in the stands. The PSAC Swimming Championships have drawn capacity crowds in past years and no tickets will be sold once the stands reach capacity. THERE WILL BE NO ADVANCED PRE-SALE. Tickets will only be available at the meet.
