JORDAN SHIELDS

Mercyhurst - Excercise Science Major

New Kensington / Burrell HS

Shields is a junior who wrestles at 157 pounds for the Lakers highly competitive Division II program.  He is coming off a sophomore campaign in which he earned All-America status by finishing fourth overall and tied for the team lead with 27 wins.  In 2011-12, he has compiled a 17-3 overall mark, which includes a title at the Ohio Northern Tournament.  He currently sits atop his weight class in the latest Super One regional rankings. 

Why did you choose Mercyhurst?

My brother and the education.  (Jordan's brother, Josh, is a senior 165-pounder for the Lakers, who won a national title two years ago.)
What are your career plans?

Graduate and become a personal trainer/strength coach and eventually own a gym.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Lance Armstrong because he is an absolute athletic freak of nature and for his perseverance.
What is the biggest adjustment you had to make going from high school to college?

Actually caring about school and the competiveness of the wrestling.

What person has had the most significant influence on you from an athletics perspective?

My high school wrestling coaches.

What is the thing you’ve enjoyed most about college?

The family... aka the wrestling team.
What is your top collegiate athletics memory?

Taking fourth at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.

... your most memorable athletic accomplishment throughout your life?

Taking fourth at nationals and winning a team state title in wrestling.
What is your favorite pro sports team?

Alpha Male MMA team
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

The more you know the less you know.
If I could change one thing about the sport I play, it would be:

you wouldn’t be allowed to cut weight
Did you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?

I wear tube socks when competing.

Believe in yourself.
If I could go pro in any sport it would be:
