PSAC Student-Athlete Feature - Nadirah Brown Wednesday, January 25, 2012 12:36 PM NADIRAH BROWN Cheyney - Biology Major East Orange, N.J. / Willingboro HS Brown is a senior forward on women's basketball team who has been a key addition at Cheyney since transferring last year from Burlington County College. This year she leads the Lady Wolves in both scoring (12.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.8 ppg), with averages that rank 14th and seventh overall in the PSAC, respectively. In her initial campaign, she was among league leaders with 13.8 ppg and 8.5 rpg, and was recognized as a second-team All-PSAC Eastern Division member. What is the thing you’ve enjoyed most about college? Being a student-athlete and people on campus rooting for you and coming out showing support. What is the best advice you’ve ever been given? To be confident and have pride in everything you do. What is the biggest adjustment you had to make going from high school to college? Getting up on time for class after games the day before and learning to be responsible. What are your career plans? To attend nursing school and become a nurse practitioner specializing in obstetrics. Who is your favorite athlete and why? Dirk Nowitzki because I feel like we play the same position and carry out the same style of play. He is very versatile, can shoot, post, and take people off the dribble. What is your favorite pro sports team? The New York Giants and the Phoenix Suns. Among athletes in the family, where do you rate? I rate myself second after my brother who plays football in the PSAC (Nadirah's bother, Nadir Brown, is a wide receiver at California). He is more experienced than me... I am better than him at my sport but I cannot compete with him at football. Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions? No I just go out and play and give it my all. What do you consider your most memorable athletic accomplishment -- individually or as a part of a team -- throughout your life? Scoring 1,000 points in college and always being a leader on my team. If I could go pro in any sport it would be: Soccer What person has had the most significant influence on you from an athletics perspective? My junior college coach Carolyn Jones. She has always been there for me and always made me do extra because she saw potential in me I didn’t even see in myself. She never gave up on me and I'm still so proud to have someone like her in my life. What is your top collegiate athletics memory? Last year on the second day of the UDC Thanksgiving Classic, we were playing against Georgian Court. In a tie game, I got a steal, drove to the basket and got fouled. I made both of them to give us the win and I also made all-tournament team. (In addition to the game-winning free throws, Brown scored 26 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the victory). Words your coach says that you swear you can hear in your sleep: Stop whining. What’s on your Ipod during pregame? Wale Stuck on a deserted island, what three things would you bring? My cell phone, food, and a knife. If I could change one thing about the sport I play, it would be: To let the women have a 35 second shot clock. Who is your celebrity crush? Idris Elba My hidden talent is: Making funny faces. What is your favorite vacation spot? Jamaica I would be a lot more effective if I would spend less time: Worrying about things I cannot control. Sport I would look bad doing, and why: Cheerleading. I'm just not that type of girl. The most addictive snack food for me is: Nacho cheese sunflower seeds.
