Mechanicsburg, Pa. - Cumberland Valley High School will once again serve as the host to the 2011 PSAC Swimming Championships, which will be contested this weekend beginning on Thursday, February 17 and running through Sunday, February 20. This year will mark the 53rd year of the PSAC men's championships and the 36th year of the women's championships.
The men's and women's 1000 freestyle events will get the championships underway on Thursday night beginning at 6:30 p.m. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the morning preliminary heats will begin at 10:00 a.m. on each day while the nightly championship heats will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. The complete event schedule is listed below.
West Chester is the defending men's and women's champion. The Golden Ram men are the 12-time defending champions, with last year's title pulling the program within one of Clarion for most all-time, 24-23. The Rams will be among the favorites again this year as they return three different individuals that were responsible for six individual titles in last year's championships, including last year's Most Outstanding Swimmer in Kenny McCormick, who won the 200 fly and 200 and 400 IMs. Seven teams will compete for the men's title: Bloomsburg, Clarion, Edinboro, Gannon, IUP, Shippensburg and West Chester.
The Golden Ram women are four-time defending champions but they will be defending their title without the services of the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the past two championships in Jackie Borkowski. They still return two swimmers that were responsible for three individual titles last year, including distance champion Kristen Montello, who captured both the 500 and 1000 free titles. West Chester figures to be pushed by Clarion, which last won a title in 2006 but owns the most PSAC title in history with 26. The Golden Eagles return three individuals that won three titles last year in Kayla Shull (100 back), Kaitlyn Johnson (100 fly) and Morgan Oberlander (400 IM). The women's field features all seven of the above teams as well as teams from California, East Stroudsburg, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield and Millersville, making up a 13-team field.
Adult tickets for the event will be $5 for preliminaries, $7 for finals or an all-session pass can be purchased for $35. Students from PSAC schools are admitted free with school-affiliated ID. Fees for non-PSAC students are $2 for each session and $10 for an all-session pass.
