West Chester's Allison Hostetter led her team to a split of this past weekend's PSAC crossover games and a non-conference win over a previously ranked opponent to earn the PSAC East Athlete of the Week honor. The West award is shared this week as both Gannon's Jen Papich and Lock Haven's Peaches Nesmith averaged nearly-identical numbers in leading their teams to sweeps in crossover action.

IUP's Marita Mathe led the way for the Crimson Hawks in helping her team remain unbeaten to earn the West Freshman of the Week honor while East Stroudsburg's Jessica Martin is the East Freshman of the Week for the second straight week after helping the Warrior to their third straight win before finishing the week 1-1.



PSAC East Athlete of the Week
Allison Hostetter, West Chester
Senior, Guard
Oxford, Pa./Oxford


Hostetter averaged 19.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.3 steals in West Chester's 2-1 week. She made half of her shots from the floor (24-of-48) and 10-of-11 free throws (90.9 percent) and committed just five turnovers in 73 minutes of play. In last Tuesday's 84-70 win over previously-ranked Holy Family, Hostetter scored a career-high 24 points and pulled down six rebounds. In Saturday's 102-68 win over Clarion, she posted 19 points in just 19 minutes of action. She then concluded her week with 16 points and nine rebounds in Sunday's last second, 66-64 loss to unbeaten Gannon.


PSAC East Freshman of the Week
Jessica Martin, East Stroudsburg

Martin earns the East Freshman of the Week award for the second straight week after averaging 7.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in East Stroudsburg's 1-1 week. In Saturday's 60-50 win over Slippery Rock that ran the Warriors' winning streak to three, Martin scored 10 points and recorded three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. She then had four points, three blocks and two rebounds in Sunday's loss to Mercyhurst. Martin is currently third on her team in minutes per game at 27.7.


PSAC West Co-Athlete of the Week
Jen Papich, Gannon
Forward, Sophomore
Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel

Papich averaged 24.5 points, 6 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game on the week to help lead her squad to a pair of conference wins.  Against Millersville, the sophomore scored 26 points, which included ten straight baskets.  Her 21 points during the first 20 minutes outscored the entire Millersville squad in the first half.  She followed that strong performance with another outstanding night against West Chester.  She scored 26 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the contest.  She also played a vital role defensively, recording a block and a steal in the final two minutes of the game.  She followed that by hitting two free throws to tie the game with just 1:38 remaining. 


PSAC West Co-Athlete of the Week
Peaches Nesmith, Lock Haven
Senior, Guard
Philadelphia, Pa. / Northeast

Nesmith led her squad to two conference road victories on the week by averaging 23.5 points and nine rebounds per game.  Against Cheyney, she scored a game-high 24 points and collected seven rebounds as she shot 75% from the field.  She followed that performance with another outstanding game where the senior recorded a double-double by scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in a victory over Shippensburg. 

PSAC West Freshman of the Week
Marita Mathe, IUP
Freshman, Guard

Mathe helped lead her squad to two victories on the week with her strong play.  During the week, she averaged 17 points, three rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game.  Against Washington Adventist, Mathe scored 15 points in just 18 minutes, and was perfect on her five shot attempts.  The freshman also knocked down both free throw attempts that she took.  In the win over Shippensburg, Mathe put up a game-high 19 points in 26 minutes off the bench.  She hit five three-pointers and collected five rebounds in the victory. 



Team Notes

Bloomsburg

Bloomsburg's Dana Wieller became the 19th player in school history to score 1,000 career points when she reached the milestone in a win over Lincoln...Wieller tied her career high with 29 points in a loss to IUP...The Huskies beat Cal 77-68 avenging a loss to the Vulcans in last year's PSAC semi-finals...Bloomsburg has two players in hot pursuit of the school's all-time mark for made three-pointers. Kelsey Gallagher has 194, while Dana Wieller has 193. Both are chasing the record of 207 set by Michelle Albanese who played from 2001-05.

California
Cal U opened play at its new Convocation Center this weekend with a pair of PSAC Crossover games … In the first-ever game at the facility, the Vulcans posted a 79-52 victory against Mansfield on Saturday … Freshman G Chelsea McKnight scored the first basket at the new arena and was one of five players to score in double-figures … Senior F Amy Johns finished with her first double-double of the year and seventh of her career on Sunday, posting 23 points and 11 rebounds … In the Vulcans’ loss on Sunday, Bloomsburg made 15 three-pointers, which is the highest single-game total against Cal U in recent program history

Cheyney
The Lady Wolves found the shooters touch over the weekend. Cheyney shot 46% from the field in Saturday's loss to Lock Haven and 43% in Sunday's loss to Edinboro…Nadirah Brown and Brooke Garrett each recorded a double-double, their first of the season, against Edinboro. Brown scored 21 points while grabbing 11 rebounds and Gerrett tallied 12 points while grabbing 11 rebounds…For the first time this season the Lady Wolves did not make a three pointer in a contest…Cheyney has completed its home crossover schedule.

Clarion
Sr. forward Courtney Healy became the fifth player in school history to block 100 shots Saturday. She has 102 in her career and needs 10 more to tie Janelle Zabraskey for 4th in school history ... So. Emma Fickel hit 3 three-pointers Sunday and now has 102 in her career in just 31 games, already the 14th best mark in school history. She is just 22 threes shy of moving into the top 10 in Clarion history ... Fr. forward Hannah Heeter has had quite a Clarion debut. Despite no preseason practice because she is also a member of Clarion's NCAA qualifying volleyball team, Heeter already has 22 points and 17 rebounds including a high of 13 points and a high of 9 rebounds.

East Stroudsburg
ESU (3-3, 1-3) won 60-50 at Slippery Rock on Saturday for its first three-game winning streak since February 2009 ... Warriors fell 59-43 at Mercyhurst on Sunday ... So. G Andrea Veres scored 12 points and Fr. F Jessica Martin, last week's PSAC East Freshman of the Week, had 10 in the win at Slippery Rock ... ESU shot 46.9 percent in the victory ... Warriors forced 57 turnovers on the weekend, 26 at SRU and 31 at Mercyhurst ... Jr. F Fayola Moise was the only double-figure scorer at Mercyhurst with 11 points ... 4 of the Warriors' top 6 scorers - Martin (9.0), Moise (7.7), Fr. G Ryann Fiascki (4.5) and Fr. F Kelsey Murray (4.2) - are first-year players ... Sr. G Cyara Woodridge leads at 12.7 with Veres at 11.3 ... Martin also averages 5.5 boards and 2.5 blocks per game ... ESU hosts undefeated IUP and California this weekend.

Edinboro
The Fighting Scots jumped three spots in the USA TODAY/ESPN Top 25 Coaches’ Poll to No. 11 this week and improved to 5-0 for the first time since the 2005-06 season with a pair of weekend crossover victories at Shippensburg and Cheyney … Edinboro outscored Shippensburg, 26-14 over the last 12:02 of Saturday’s game to erase a 10-point second half deficit and escape with a 63-61 win. Junior Kiara Brown paced Edinboro with 15 points to go along with five steals in 26 minutes of play … The Fighting Scots cruised to an 89-53 win at Cheyney on Sunday, lead by a career-high 24 points from junior Samantha Blazetic. Senior Raven Metz also poured in a career-best 18 points one day after setting a personal high with nine assists at Shippensburg … Edinboro has three games in four days all at home this week.

Gannon
Gannon finished the weekend with two road wins against Millersville (52-45) and West Chester (68-66)…Jen Papich led the way offensively, averaging 24.5 points and six rebounds…The Lady Knights held off a comeback effort from Millersville to earn a 52-45 win…Sophomore Kelley Sundberg hit a jumper and two free throws down the stretch for the win…Against West Chester senior Caitlyn Lowe was the hero, hitting a three-pointer with less than one second on the clock to propel the Lady Knights to a 68-66 win. She also hit a game-tying three with 1:07 left in the game…Nettie Blake recorded her second career double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds against Millersville. She was Gannon's second leading scorer for the weekend, averaging 9.5 points.

IUP
The Crimson Hawks remained undefeated on the season, going 3-0 during the week, including wins over Washington Adventist and Mansfield, and a huge upset victory over Bloomsburg…IUP was a scoring machine, averaging 88.0 points in the three wins, outscoring opponents by 24 per game…The Crimson Hawks easily rolled past Washington Adventist on Tuesday, winning 91-46, with five players scoring in double-figures…Five more players reached double-figures in the upset 84-79 win over the Huskies, with Fr. G Marita Mathe leading the way with 19 points in 26 minutes off the bench…The Crimson Hawks held off a second half rally by Bloomsburg, with Mathe and Jr. F Sarah Pastorek each hitting a pair of free throws in the final minute of the five-point win…Pastorek then fell one point short of a career-high on Sunday, scoring 27 points on 11-14 shooting in the blowout 89-67 win over Mansfield.

Kutztown
The Golden Bears have three players who are averagaing double figures in scoring this season (Ashley Wood, Andrea Sisson, and Avery Hodgson)…Steph Zewe leads the team in rebounds with 80 on the year, averaing, 8.9/game. Hodgson leads KU in blocks (12), while Wood leads KU in steals (11)…KU is outshooting its opponents from the free throw line .776-.648.

Lock Haven
Lock Haven went 2-0 this week against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East opponents Cheyney and Shippensburg to improve their record to 4-1 overall, 3-1 in the PSAC. Peaches Nesmith led the team as she scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds against Cheyney. She also had a big day against Shippensburg leading the team with 23 points and 11 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season. Nesmith is averaging 18.8 points per game to lead the team on the young season. Heather McHugh and Sharay Hall both are also averaging double-digit points with 14.2 and 11.0 respectively. This will mark the second straight season that the Lady Eagles have started the year with a 4-1 record.

Mansfield
The Mountaineers picked up their first win of the season, defeating Houghton College 82-61 followed by conference losses to Cal and IUP on the road ... Senior guard Mallory Moore continues to move-up in the Mansfield record books ... The Beech Creek, Pa. native passed Lynelle Mosely for eighth in all-time career scoring with a 20 point effort against Houghton ... the very next game, Moore move into seventh all-time, passing Glenda Oswald, with a game-high 19 points against Cal ... Junior forward Julia Stevenson has scored in double-figures in each of the Mountaineers five games this season and leads the team in rebounding with 6.8 boards a game.

Mercyhurst
Mercyhurst went 2-0 at home this weekend, beating Kutztown, 67-60, and East Stroudsburg, 59-43, in two PSAC contests at the MAC…Senior Nikki Frederickson scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds (seven offensive) to lead the Lakers past Kutztown Dec. 3…Hurst held the Golden Bears to 29.4 percent shooting from the floor…Frederickson had another solid game against ESU, scoring 12 points, grabbing six boards and making four steals…Mercyhurst shot 52.6 percent as a team in the victory, holding the Warriors to 32.7 percent shooting…the Lakers forced East Stroudsburg into 27 turnovers and 1-11 shooting from three-point land…the 27 forced turnovers are the most by a Laker defense since Jan. 21, 2006, when they hounded Lake Superior State into 27 mishaps…Hurst improved to 2-2 in the PSAC heading into this weekend’s road contests at Mansfield (Dec. 9) and at Bloomsburg (Dec. 10).

Millersville
Millersville improved to 4-1, 3-1 PSAC after opening the season with five straight home games…The Marauders will now going on an eight-game road trip before returning home on Jan. 14…Aurielle Mosley has recorded a double-double in all five games this season to now have 25 career double-doubles…Millersville is averaging 64 points a game, while holding opponents to just 52.

Shippensburg
Shippensburg capped off a seven-game homestand to start the 2011-12 season with a 4-3 overall record...Senior forward Monae Baker has averaged a double-double thus far with 16.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game and is shooting over 54 percent from the floor...SU has gotten to the free-throw line 160 times in seven games and is shooting 76.9 percent...Junior guards Shawna and Dana Wert are both shooting over 80 percent from the free-throw line...Shawna has 40 makes from the charity stripe and Dana has 33 assists compared to 13 turnovers...SU is 4-1 when it gets to the free-throw line at least 20 times in a game...SU is 1-3 when committing more turnovers than its opponent.

Slippery Rock
Slippery Rock dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in PSAC play with home losses to East Stroudsburg and Kutztown last weekend ... Danielle Smith continues to lead The Rock, most recently posting game highs of 18 points and 17 rebounds in a 50-47 loss to Kutztown ... She is scoring 15.3 ppg and pulling down 18.8 rebounds. Jasmine Cooper adds 13.2 ppg and 9.0 rebounds per game.

West Chester
West Chester picked up a pair of impressive wins last week, downing previously nationally ranked Holy Family, 84-70, and beating Clarion, 102-68 ... The Rams lone loss was a last-second buzzer-beater to undefeated Gannon, 66-64 ... West Chester scored 61 points in the first half of its win over Clarion ... It was the most points in a half since the Rams put up 60 points against Columbia Union in 1999 ... Sr. guard Allison Hostetter averaged 19.7 ppg, 7.0 rpg, and 5.3 apg in the three contests ... She missed a double-double against Gannon by one rebound ... She was a perfect 9-for-9 from the line against Clarion.
