Sam Mazzie of Bloomsburg, Jess Fugate of Gannon named Freshmen of the Year

2010 All-PSAC Lacrosse Teams (pdf)

Lock Haven, Pa. - East Stroudsburg’s Molly O’Hara has been named the PSAC East Athlete of the Year while Lock Haven’s Leigh Titus has been named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year for the second straight season as the high-scoring duo highlight the 2010 All-PSAC lacrosse teams.

Bloomsburg’s Samantha Mazzie is the PSAC East Freshman of the Year while Gannon’s Jess Fugate is the PSAC West Freshman of the Year. The PSAC Coaches of the Year are both repeat winners from last year, as Bloomsburg Leah Carr is honored in the East and Lock Haven’s Kristen Selvage is honored in the West.

Bloomsburg led the way with the most overall selections and first team selections in the East, with seven overall selections and five on the first team. Four of the five first team honorees for Bloomsburg are first time all-conference honorees, led by leading scorer Allie Kakareka. Freshman of the Year Mazzie is also on the first team as well as defender Ashley Bowers, a junior who makes her third straight appearance on the All-PSAC team, but her first as a member of the first team. Her older sister, Tia Mazzie, is also on the second team for the second straight year.

East Stroudsburg had five all-conference picks, led by the Player of the Year O’Hara and second team midfielder Christine Bradley, a junior who makes her third appearance on the all-conference team. Division champion West Chester had four picks, led by defender Katy Crouse, who ends her career as three-time first team All-PSAC pick. Also highlighting the East team is Shippensburg senior midfielder Gayle Kuntzmann, who also ends her career as a three-time first team All-PSAC pick, and Millersville senior midfielder Liz Weekley, who ends her career as a three-time all-conference selection. Over half of the players on the All-PSAC East teams - 14 of 24 - are first time all-conference honorees, including seven on the first team. All four of the forwards on the first team and all four of the defenders on the second team, as well as both goalkeepers, are on the all-conference team for the first time in their careers.

Lock Haven led all PSAC teams with eight overall selections on the West teams, including six on the first team led by Titus, the PSAC’s leading scorer. She is the only four-time All-PSAC honoree on the this year’s teams, as she ends her career as a three-time first team All-PSAC selection and a one-time second team pick. Titus is the only honoree on the All-West teams that is more than a two-time honoree this year. Joining her on the first team is last year’s Freshman of the Year, Kayleigh Johnson and Allison Berger on the front line, and backs Krystalle Neighbor and Kate Zichelli as well as goalkeeper Kira Nuttall. Midfielder Elyse Fisher and defender Clare Gaeng are on the second team.

Mercyhurst had the second-most honorees in both the West and overall in the PSAC, led by first teamers Kim Masterton and Maggie Yackel, who are both on the first team for the second straight year. They were joined on the first team by fellow Laker Alexandra Keim. Also appearing on the first team for the second straight year is Slippery Rock back Bri Dishong.

O’Hara is the East Player of the Year and is also a member of the all-conference team for the first time in her career. The junior was the fourth-leading scorer in the PSAC and the top scorer in the PSAC East at 3.11 goals per game, compiling 56 goals in 18 games. She also dished out 10 assists for a total of 66 points and compiled 37 ground balls, caused 15 turnovers and had three game-winning goals. Her efforts helped lead the Warriors to the PSAC tournament for the second time in the last three seasons.

Titus is the PSAC West Player of the Year for the second straight season after leading the Lady Eagles to their second straight PSAC championship. Titus, who this season broke the PSAC record for career goals, led the PSAC in goals per game with 4.06 and overall ranked second in goals scored with 69. She also ranked third in the PSAC in points per game with 5.12 and fourth with 87 total points, also compiling 18 assists on top of her 69 goals. Additionally, she topped the PSAC in shots per game and had four game-winning goals in addition to 49 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers, both second on the Lady Eagles.

Mazzie is the second straight Husky to win the East Freshman of the Year, following teammate Samantha King last year. One of four freshmen to be named to the All-PSAC East teams this year, Mazzie ranked third on the Huskies in goals (42) and assists (20) and second in points with 62. Her efforts helped the Huskies finish second in the PSAC East and once again return to the PSAC tournament semifinals.

Fugate stood above all other freshmen in the PSAC West in a year in which no other freshmen named to the All-West teams. Fugate ranked third on the Golden Knights in goals with 30 and was fifth in points with 37, as she provided a solid third scoring option behind leading scorers Taryn Millerd and Mary Eshenour

Carr is the PSAC East Coach of the Year for the second straight season, and it is also the second Coach of the Year award in her career. Carr guided the Huskies to their fourth straight appearance in the PSAC Tournament and helped a team that had lost two of its top three scorers from last year maintain its place in the standings as the Huskies finished second in the PSAC East for the second straight year.

Selvage earns the PSAC West Coach of the Year accolade for the second straight year and for the fourth time in her career, as she also earned the conference coach of the year award in both 2002 and 2004 in addition to last year. The 2004 season marked the first of a current seven-year streak in which the Lady Eagles have qualified for the PSAC Tournament, and the Eagles also captured their second straight PSAC title this year. After winning their first matches of the season before falling to Mercyhurst in the regular season finale, the Eagles caught fire in the PSAC Tournament, outscoring their two opponents by a 36-11 margin en route to their championship.
