East Stroudsburg’s Christian Saveri, California’s Randy Sturgill named Pitchers of the Year

2010 All-PSAC Baseball Teams (pdf)

Lock Haven, Pa. - Shayne Houck
of Kutztown and Paul Bingham of IUP, the two top hitters in the PSAC this year, have been named the PSAC East and PSAC West Players of the Year, respectively, as they highlight the 2010 All-PSAC baseball teams. A pair of lefties were honored as the Pitchers of the Year as East Stroudsburg’s Christian Saveri is the PSAC East Pitcher of the Year while California’s Randy Sturgill is the PSAC West Pitcher of the Year.

A pair of freshman pitchers were named the Freshmen of the Year in each division as West Chester’s Fred Breidenbach is the PSAC East Freshman of the Year and Mercyhurst’s Ben Rawding is the PSAC West Pitcher of the Year. East Stroudsburg’s John Kochmansky is the PSAC East Coach of the Year while California’s Mike Conte is the PSAC West Coach of the Year.

The East teams were dominated by the teams that finished first and second in the division as East champion West Chester led the way with six first team selections and 11 overall selections, tops of any team in either division. Kutztown had five first team picks and six selections overall. Of the 14 slots on the first team, 11 were taken up by either West Chester or Kutztown representatives. Mansfield’s Kevin Miller at outfield and Bernard Johnson at relief pitcher and East Stroudsburg’s Saveri, the Pitcher of the Year, were the only players from schools other than West Chester or Kutztown to make the first team. In the West, division winner IUP led the way with five first team selections, led by the Player of the Year in Bingham. Overall, the Crimson Hawks also led with nine total selections.

Only two players on the All-PSAC teams, one in each division, earned their fourth all-conference citation. West Chester shortstop Nick Spisak earned first team honors for the third straight year after being named to the second team as a freshman. In the West, Bingham earns his first career first team All-PSAC honor after being named to the second team in each of the last three years. Every team in the PSAC had at least one representative on the all-conference teams.

Houck earns the East Player of the Year as a sophomore, just one year after winning the East Freshman of the Year award. Houck led the PSAC in hitting this year with a .480 average and also led the league with 16 home runs and 71 RBI and 146 total bases. He was also second in the PSAC in doubles with 23, fourth in hits with 73 and tied for the league lead in runs scored with 70. His efforts were a big part of Kutztown’s successful season in which the Golden Bears finished second in the PSAC East and as a runner-up in the PSAC Tournament. The Golden Bears also will take the PSAC’s best overall winning percentage into a likely berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Bingham finished second in the PSAC in hitting to Houck with a .463 average. He tied with Houck for the league lead in runs with 70, led the league in hits with 88, which was 13 more than the two players tied for second place, and triples with 12. The speedy shortstop also led the PSAC in stolen bases with 45 (in 52 attempts) and finished second in total bases with 134 and fifth in RBI with 59. He was a big part of the reason that IUP won its first PSAC West championship since 1990.

Saveri is the East Pitcher of the Year, becoming the first East Stroudsburg hurler to win the division’s top pitching honor since Mike Balent in 1985, and just the second Warrior ever to win the award. He is also the first Warrior hurler to be named to the All-PSAC East first team since 1993. Saveri compiled a 4-4 record and a 2.70 ERA through the end of the regular season before finishing with a 3.37 ERA and a 4-5 record. He also picked up two saves and was third in the PSAC in innings pitched with 69.1. He struck out 65 to rank fifth in the PSAC and walked just 14 while giving up 26 earned runs. A second team All-PSAC pick last year as a reliever, Saveri’s record was hurt this year by a lack of run support, as East Stroudsburg scored more than three runs in just two of his 10 starts.

Sturgill is the West Pitcher of the Year two year after being named the PSAC West Rookie of the Year and just one year after missing most of the 2009 season with an injury. The southpaw finished fifth in the PSAC in ERA at 3.18 and compiled an 8-1 record to rank second in the league in wins while pitching 70.1 innings, second most in the PSAC. He led the PSAC in strikeouts with 86 and walked just 29 while giving up 25 earned runs. His efforts at the top of the Vulcan rotation helped California to a second place finish in the PSAC West and the PSAC Tournament championship.

Breidenbach burst onto the scene for West Chester as he helped the Golden Rams make up for the loss of several of last year’s top pitchers by going 10-2 with a 4.05 ERA to help the Rams win the PSAC East championship. He led the PSAC in wins as well as inning pitched with 73.1. He struck out 45 and walked just 19 while giving up 23 earned runs.

Rawding did the same for Mercyhurst as he helped the Lakers withstand the loss of some of last year’s key arms to remain near the top of the PSAC West as he compiled a 3.22 ERA and a 5-4 record for the Lakers, tossing four complete games, including three shutouts. He struck out 51 and walked 18 in 58.2 innings and gave up 21 earned runs.

Kochmansky earns his first PSAC East Coach of the Year honor, becoming the first East Stroudsburg coach to be honored as the division’s top coach since 1985. He guided the Warriors to a fourth place finish in the PSAC East and a berth in the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 2007. After starting PSAC East play with a 2-10 record, the Warriors rallied back to finish 9-3 in the division, which included a 10-game winning streak and a 15-3 overall finish to the season.

Conte earns his third PSAC West Coach of the Year award in the last five seasons, and his sixth West Coach of the Year award of his career. He guided the Vulcans to a 32-16 overall record this year and a second place finish in the PSAC West and a berth in the PSAC Tournament for the 10th straight season. At the PSAC Tournament, the Vulcans won their first tournament title since 2004, going 4-0 in the tournament to nab the automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
