Prestigious list features two repeat winners from last year, two repeat winners from other seasons

Lock Haven, Pa. - The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) is pleased to announce its Winter 2009-10 Top 10 Award recipients. The PSAC Top 10 Awards, which are selected by the PSAC’s sports information directors, recognize student-athletes who excel in both the classroom and in the area of competition. The PSAC Top 10 Awards are in their 13th season of existence, having been initiated in the 1997-98 academic year.

The Top 10 Awards recognize 10 outstanding student-athletes, five male and five female, for each athletic seasons: fall, winter and spring. The Winter 2009-10 Top 10 Award winners are Rich Eckert of Clarion, Chris Edelman of Lock Haven, Jarrod King of Edinboro, Paul Wagner of East Stroudsburg and Shane Wolter of Shippensburg on the men’s side, and Lauren Beckley and Neely Spence of Shippensburg, Jennifer Hansen of Slippery Rock, Kristen Montello of West Chester and Lizzie Suwala of Clarion on the women’s side. Beckley and King are both repeat winners of the Winter Top 10 awards, with both having also been honored as Winter Top 10 recipients last year. Beckley is now a three-time Winter Top 10 award recipient, having also won the award during the 2007-08 winter season. Additionally, Hansen of Slippery Rock picked up her fourth Top 10 award, having also been honored in the winter of 2007-08 and the spring of both 2007 and 2008, while Wagner of East Stroudsburg earns his second Top 10 award, having also been honored in the spring of last year.

To be a candidate for the PSAC Top 10 Awards, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and must be a starter or key reserve with legitimate athletic credentials for their respective team. The winter sports eligible for consideration for the Winter Top 10 Awards are men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track & field and wrestling. At the end of the academic year, all Top 10 Award winners from the entire academic year are eligible for the PSAC Pete Nevins Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards, given to one male and one female candidate at the end of the academic year.

Fourth in the PSAC, 33rd in the nation in scoring at 18.1 points per game…Third in the PSAC, 5th in the nation in free-throw shooting (89.1 percent)…Second in the PSAC, 18th in the nation in 3-point shooting (43 percent)…Second in the PSAC, 24th in the nation in 3-pointers made per game (2.7)…10th in the PSAC, 59th in the nation in shooting (47.4 percent)…Tied for 20th in PSAC in rebounding at 6.3 rebounds per game…10th in shooting in the PSAC (47.4 percent)…Two 30-point games, 9 20-point games during the season…Four double-doubles…Avg. 25.3 ppg while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor and 57.4 percent from the free-throw line between Jan. 30 and Feb. 24 helping Clarion stay in the PSAC Playoff race. Her streak of five straight 20-point games from Jan. 30-Feb. 11 is tied for the second-longest streak of 20 or more points in school history and she became the first Golden Eagle to score 25 or more points in four straight games during that stretch...2010 First Team PSAC-West…1,017 career points, 425 rebounds, 110 assists, 69 steals, 53 blocks…87.6 percent career free-throw shooter.

won PSAC championships in weight throw (66-3 3/4) and shot put (52-5 1/4)...NCAA automatic qualifier in weight throw and provisional qualifier in shot put...Competed at NCAA indoor championships in weight but did not place...2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and spring Top 10 recipient...Two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic team...All-American in hammer, placing 6th, at 2009 outdoor championships...Holds ESU and PSAC records in weight (66-3 3/4) and hammer (196-9)...Has won six PSAC championships (three in weight, two in hammer, one in indoor shot put)...Has also placed in discus and shot put outdoors...PSAC indoor co-field athlete of the meet and outdoor field athlete of the meet in 2008.

 












Shane Wolter, Shippensburg

Senior Shane Wolter became the first individual PSAC champion for the Shippensburg University men's swimming team since Mike Owen in 2007 as the Red Raiders finished in third place at the 2010 PSAC Swimming Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School...He also has the highest GPA of any member of the men's swimming team...Wolter was unable to achieve an automatic qualifying time in the 1,650-yard freestyle but distanced the rest of the field by six seconds with a provisional cut of 16:06.96...Wolter earned all-conference honors in the mile for the second consecutive year after a second-place turn in 2009 and has now completed five All-PSAC swims in his career...Overall, Wolter was a four-time All-PSAC performer, finishing third in the 500 free (4:37.01) and contributing to the 400 and 800 freestyle relays. He held the team's best times in four events and was an NCAA 'B' cut performer in the 200, 500 and 1,650 freestyle...As a junior, Wolter capped off an unbelievable PSAC tournament with a second-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, completing his swim in 15:58.52 and missing an automatic-qualifying time by just 0.43 seconds. That time ranks second in SU history...For the week, Wolter finished second in the 400-yard IM and fifth in the 1,000-yard freestyle while helping the 800-yard freestyle relay to a third-place finish. Wolter entered the tournament among the top six qualifiers in five events and helped guide SU to a runner-up trophy for a second-place finish, the school's best finish in 13 years...As a sophomore, Wolter earned  the team's top performance in the 500 freestyle, the 1,000 free and the 1,650-yard freestyle as well as the team's top time in the 400 IM…Swam the second-fastest time in the in the 200 backstroke. As a freshman, Wolter placed in the top five in three distance events at the conference championships…Recorded the sixth-fastest time in school history in the 1000 free with an NCAA 'B' cut time and third-place finish at the PSAC Championships.
