2010 All-PSAC East Football Team (pdf)
Lock Haven, Pa. - Quarterback Kevin Morton of Kutztown, who helped lead the Golden Bears to their first NCAA playoff berth, has been named the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year while Bloomsburg linebacker Mike Varanavage, who helped lead the Huskies to the PSAC East championship, has been named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the year, highlighted the 2010 All-PSAC East football teams. Bloomsburg running back Franklyn Quiteh, the leading rusher in the nation, has been named the PSAC East Freshman of the Year while Kutztown head coach Raymond Monica, who guided the Golden Bears to a school record 10 victories this season entering the NCAA playoffs, has been named the PSAC East Coach of the Year.
PSAC East champion Bloomsburg led the way with nine first team selections and 14 overall selections to the all-conference team. Second place Kutztown had the next most all-conference picks with seven first teamers and 11 overall, including one individual named twice. Third place C.W. Post was next with six first team selections and eight overall while Shippensburg also had eight overall selections. Leading the way for Bloomsburg on the first team was Quiteh, who was one of two freshman running backs on the first team along with Cheyney’s Marcus Jones. Offensive tackle Daryl Kurtz, offensive guard Pat Casey and center Chris Steck gave the Huskies 60 percent of its starting offensive linemen on the first team while tight end Ben Weaber also is on the first team. Defensively, the Huskies were represented on the first team by defensive tackle Marcus Zimmerman, the Player of the Year in Varanavage as well as Thomas McFarland at linebacker, and defensive back Oscar Rivera. Aside from Rivera, who is making his second straight appearance on the first team, the other three Husky first team defensive picks are all first time all-conference players.
Kutztown’s first team offensive selections were Morton and kicker Matt Dineen, who is the first team kicker for the second straight season. There were five Golden Bears on the first team defense, led by linebacker Joel Irwin, now a two-time All-PSAC pick after being named to the second team last season. He was joined by defensive lineman Kevin Bolinsky, who ranks second in the PSAC in sacks and defensive back Khalief Evans. Return specialist Kendell Coleman returns to the first team after also being the first team return specialist two years ago. Dineen also doubles as this year’s first team punter, earning his first all-conference recognition as a punter in addition to being the first team kicker for the second straight season. Golden Bears on the second team include offensive tackle Aaron McGlynn, wide receivers Erik Frazier and Chris McCormick and running back Josh Mastromatto. Shippensburg’s eight selections were led by first team running back Kevin Marshall, who is on the all-conference team for the third straight season, having made second team last year and first team two years ago. Marshall was also honored as the return specialist on the second team after ranking third in the PSAC in average kickoff returns, his first career All-PSAC honor as a return specialist. Fellow running back Kevin Herod is on the second team after making the first team last season as a freshman. C.W. Post had offensive tackle John Siopa, offensive guard Kevin Martin and wide receiver Darnel Williams, the PSAC leader in catches, on the first team offense and defensive linemen Xavier Brown and Lou Scala as well as defensive back Juma McKenley on the first team defense.
Other highlights on the East team include the only four-time All-PSAC East selection on this year’s teams in West Chester defensive lineman Travis Ford-Bey, who makes the first team for the third straight season after being a second teamer as a freshman. C.W. Post senior defensive lineman Xavier Brown wraps up his outstanding career with the Pioneers as a three-time first team All-PSAC East selection, as he was a first team pick in three of C.W. Post’s first three seasons in the PSAC. East Stroudsburg senior linebacker Matt Freed is also a three-time all-conference pick, including the last two on the first team. Overall, there were several new faces both the first and second teams this season. Of the 59 total All-PSAC East selections on both the first and second teams, including counting Dineen and Marshall twice since they were named at two different positions, 38 were first-time selections, including 14 of the 15 choices on the second team defense, where defensive lineman Tim Hume of Cheyney is the only repeat selection, having also made the second team in 2008 as a freshman. Both the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in Morton and Varanavage were also first time All-PSAC East picks. In fact, Freed, Ford-Bey, Brown and Marshall are the only four individuals that earned at least their third all-conference recognition this season, while 17 additional individuals earned their second career all-conference honor.
Morton, the Offensive Player of the Year, is the first Kutztown athlete to earn the a PSAC postseason award since Michael Baldwin was named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2005. He is also the first Kutztown Offensive Player of the Year since Mike DeMarteleire in 2000 and is the first quarterback to win the award in the East since East Stroudsburg’s Jim Terwilliger in 2006. Only a sophomore, Morton took over the starting signal-calling duties for the Golden Bears in the early part of last season as a freshman but spent his first full year as a starter this season and responded by leading the PSAC in several passing categories. Entering the NCAA playoff, Morton leads the PSAC in passing yards per game (298.3), nearly 60 yards more per game than the QB in second place, which also happens to be the second team QB in C.W. Post’s Erik Anderwkavich. Morton is also tops among PSAC QBs in total passing yards (3,281), touchdown passes (34), completions (239), and total offense both per game (321.7) and overall (3,539), as he is also Kutztown’s third-leading rusher at 23.5 yards per game and has also run for six touchdowns. He also ranks third in the PSAC in both pass efficiency (155.4) and completion percentage (62.2).
Varanavage, the Defensive Player of the Year, is the second straight Bloomsburg senior linebacker to earn the award, following former teammate Anthony Smith last year. A three-time PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week this season, he currently ranks eighth in the PSAC in tackles per game at 7.8 and has also been credited with a team-leading 8.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, five total passes defended, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. Playing in just 10 games this year, Varanavage has recorded at least 10 tackles in five of them and has been a big contributor to Bloomsburg’s defense, which is one of the top defensive units in the PSAC, including the second-best rush defense.
Quiteh, the Freshman of the Year, leads both the PSAC and Division II in rushing at 158.4 yards per game and is one of only two players in the NCAA in all divisions with over 1,700 rushing yards at this point in the season with 1,742. The first back in the NCAA in all divisions to reach the 1,000-yard rushing mark the season, Quiteh is a four-time PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week and his 19 rushing TDs is second in the both the PSAC and Division II. He has posted at least 100 rushing yards and scored at least one TD in 10 of 11 games and also has three 200-yard rushing games to his credit. A regional candidate for the Harlon Hill Trophy along with Morton and Freed out of the PSAC East, Quiteh and his 1,742 rushing yards currently rank 10th in PSAC history and fifth in Bloomsburg history. He is the third straight running back to be named the East Freshman of the Year and the second Husky in the last three years after former back Derrick Price was the 2008 Freshman of the Year.
Monica, the Coach of the Year, earns his first career Coach of the Year honor and is the first Kutztown coach to earn the East Coach of the Year award since Barry Fetterman in 1991. He has guided the Golden Bears to their best season in school history with a 10-1 regular season record, a seven-game improvement over last year and surpassing the program’s previous school record of seven, and a 6-1 PSAC East record, also the best mark in conference play in program history. The Golden Bears’ 9-0 start to the season was also the best-ever, as the program had never even started a season better than 3-0-1. All of this came on the heels of a 3-8 season last year. Not only did he also guide the Bears to their first NCAA playoff berth in school history, but Kutztown claimed the top seed in the region.
