2009 All-PSAC Softball Teams (pdf)

A total of nine softball student-athletes were honored today as major award winners as part of the All-PSAC softball teams under the new three-division format for PSAC softball. Kutztown’s Steph Denlinger and Katlin Arbogast have been named the PSAC East Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, while East Stroudsburg’s Rachel Gieringer has been named the PSAC East Freshman of the Year. Lock Haven’s Sarah Norris and Kristin Erb have been named the PSAC Central Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, while IUP’s Marissa Leslie has been named the PSAC Central Freshman of the Year. In the PSAC West, Edinboro’s Dana Webb has been named the Player of the Year while California (Pa.)’s Maria Greco and Alyson Johnson have been named the Pitcher and Freshman of the Year.

The three respective coaches of each divisional champion have been named the divisional Coaches of the Year. Kutztown’s Judy Lawes in the East, Lock Haven’s Kelley Green in the Central and California’s Rick Bertagnolli in the West have been named the PSAC Coaches of the Year.

Not surprisingly, each divisional champion also led each division with most all-conference selections. Each divisional winner also captured three out of the four awards in each division.

Kutztown led the way in the East with six first team selections and seven overall. Denlinger and Arbogast were joined on the first team by Krista Cameron, Ashley Fitzgerald, Maria Schiavo and Mary Hoch, while Kim Morrison was named to the second team.

Lock Haven had five first teamers and seven overall to lead the Central as Norris and Erb led the way on the first team. They were joined by Amanda Gutmaker, Ilia Lopez and Amanda Roosa as Lock Haven had three-quarters of its infield on the first team.  Teammates Brittany Muthard and Nancy O’Connor were named to the second team.

California had six first team selections to lead the West and also led all PSAC teams with nine total selections out of the West. The first team was led by Pitcher and Freshman of the Year Greco and Johnson, respectively, while the  Vulcans also had three-quarters of its starting infield in Julia Mueller, Jillian Russell and Danielle Easton on the first team as well as outfielder Kayleigh Braim. They were all joined by second teamers Julie Mackenzie, Katie Burke and Sonia Petrosoniak.

Under the new guidelines for selecting the All-PSAC softball teams this year under the new three-division format, the top vote-getter at each position is honored on the first team in each division, as well as the top two pitchers. The second team is made up of the next top six vote-getters, regardless of position, as well as the pitcher with the next-most votes.

Several athletes marked their fourth consecutive year on the all-conference teams this year. Denlinger, Roosa and Erb are now four-time first team honorees while Cameron, Morrison, Reed and Lopez are also four time all-conference honorees, each with three first team honors and one second team.

For Denlinger, this marks her second time as the PSAC East Player of the Year, as she also captured the award in 2007 in addition to being named the Rookie of the Year in 2006. The power-hitting first baseman broke two NCAA career records this year for home runs and walks and is ranked near the top of several other career categories both on the NCAA and PSAC career lists. She is the third straight Kutztown player to captured PSAC East Player of the Week honors, as she won the aforementioned award two years ago and was followed by teammate Ashley Fitzgerald last year.

Arbogast is also the recipient of the PSAC East Pitcher of the Year award for the second time in the last three seasons. She also won the award in 2007 as she captured both the Pitcher and Rookie of the Year awards that year.

Norris makes it three straight years for a Lock Haven player as a divisional Player of the Year, but the first in the newly-formed PSAC Central. She follows teammate Amanda Roose and Ilia Lopez, both of whom are first team selections this year and both of which were the PSAC West Players of the Year the last two respective seasons.

Erb caps her remarkable and record-setting career with her fourth straight Pitcher of the Year award, with the last three coming out of the West. She was also the PSAC West Rookie of the Year in 2006. Erb broke the NCAA Division II career mark for wins earlier this year in addition to helping lead the Lady Eagles to their fourth consecutive PSAC Tournament title.

Webb becomes the first Edinboro player in 11 seasons to capture a major award. She is the first Fighting Scot since April Hurd, who won the West’s Rookie of the Year award in 1998, to win a major postseason award from the PSAC.

Greco becomes Cal’s first-ever Pitcher of the Year honoree while Johnson is the Vulcans’ first Freshman of the Year since Debbie Tedesco in 2002.

Each Coach of the Year is also a multiple-time honoree. Lawes captures her second honor in the last three seasons, as she was also named the East Coach of the Year in 2007, and her fifth overall. Green earns her fifth straight Coach of the Year award after earning it out of the Western Division in each of the last four years, and her sixth overall. Bertagnolli earns his first Coach of the Year award since 2004 and his ninth overall.
