West Chester Wins 11th Straight PSAC Championship

Mechanicsburg, Pa. - West Chester’s men closed out a dominating performance by capturing five of the six contested events on Sunday on their way to winning the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship for the 11th straight season. The Golden Rams compiled 812 points, finishing well ahead of Shippensburg (544.5) and Clarion (504). For Shippensburg, the second-place finish was its highest since a runner-up showing in 1996.
West Chester’s Matt Golebiewski, named the Swimmer of the Meet, added to his resume on Sunday by setting a new PSAC meet record in the 100 free with a time of 45:00. Teammates Max Bernardes, Peter Madueno and David Smoker established new meet records on Sunday, as well. The first-place efforts came in the 1650 free (15:54.69) for Bernardes, the 200 breaststroke (2:05.07) for Madueno and the 200 butterfly (1:49.83) for Smoker.
The Golden Ram 400 free relay team wrapped up the meet by setting yet another meet record with a swim of 3:01.87, missing a new overall PSAC record by less than one second.
Clarion's Jon Kofmehl was the other individual event winner on Sunday as he took first place in the 200 backstroke, winning in 1:52.23.
On Saturday, West Chester won six of the seven events, including Bernardes’ new meet record in the 400 IM (3:59.43). The Golden Ram 800 free relay team of Kenny McCormick, Bernardes, Rod King and Brendan Fanslau also put on a meet record pace, winning in a time of 6:45.78.
The Golden Rams dominated the 100 butterfly, taking the top four places, led by first place finisher Phil Luzny, who touched the wall in :50.07. West Chester also took the top two spots in the 200 free, led by Golebiewski's winning time of 1:39.19. Madueno won the 100 breaststroke in :58.24. The 200 medley relay team also took first in 1:33.32.
IUP's Pawel Glowiak successfully defended his individual title in the 100 backstroke, winning in :50.61, an NCAA automatic qualifying time and the only swimmer to swim such a time in that event.
West Chester won all five events on Friday, setting new PSAC records in three of them. The 200 free relay team of Golebiewski, Fanslau, Josh Pauley and Rod King set a new PSAC record of 1:21.03 but barely edged out second place Clarion, which finished in 1:21.23. The 400 medley relay team just missed a new all-time PSAC record by under a second but set a new PSAC meet record, winning in 3:22.90.
Another PSAC record fell to McCormick in the 200 IM. He took first place by over four and a half seconds, winning in 1:50.52. Fanslau set a new PSAC record with his victory in the 50 free, touching the wall in :20.25, just beating out defending champion Ryan Thiel of Clarion by .24 of a second. Golebiewski completed the Ram sweep on Friday night with a first place finish in the 500 free in 4:34.04.
