2009 All-PSAC Men's Soccer Teams (pdf)
Lock Haven, Pa. - Millersville’s Kyle Loughlin has been named the PSAC East Player of the Year while Slippery Rock’s Jeremy Deighton has been named the PSAC West Player of the Year for the second straight season, highlighting the 2009 All-PSAC Men’s Soccer teams. Loughlin’s selection as the East Player of the Year marks the second straight year that a Millersville player has earned the East’s top award after former teammate Sean McLaughlin earned the award last season.
Bloomsburg’s Tyler Phillips is the 2009 PSAC East Freshman of the Year, becoming the second straight Husky to win the award for the East’s top freshman, following teammate Ryan Lafferty last year. Gannon’s Sean Washek is this year’s PSAC West Freshman of the Year. Bloomsburg made two out of three awards in the East as veteran head coach Paul Payne was named the East Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. In the West, Slippery Rock’s Matt Thompson earned the West Coach of the Year award for the second straight season and for the third time overall in his career.
Loughlin is ranked third in the PSAC in both points and points per game entering the NCAA Tournament. A second team All-PSAC East selection last year, Loughlin’s 31 points and 1.72 points per game led the PSAC East. He is also ranked third in the PSAC in both goals with 13 and goals per game with 0.72, which are also both the top totals in the PSAC East. He helped lead the Marauders to their second straight PSAC East title and 17-2 overall record heading into the NCAA Tournament.
Deighton becomes the first men’s soccer player to earn a PSAC Athlete of the Year award for the second straight year since Shippensburg’s Geoff Bloes won the Athlete of the Year in both 2006 and 2007. Deighton helped lead The Rock to the PSAC championship this year, the first for the program since 2005. Entering the NCAA Tournament, he leads the PSAC in points (41), points per game (2.05) and goals (17). He is also second in goals per game (0.85), tied for second in assists (7) and fifth in assists per game (0.35). He is also tops in the league in game-winning goals with eight and is the only individual in the PSAC this year with more than 40 points.
Phillips helped lead Bloomsburg to a second place finish in the PSAC East and a berth in the PSAC Tournament as he led the Huskies in goals with 11, finishing fifth in the PSAC in that category and also finishing fifth in goals per game (0.65) and seventh in both points (23) and points per game (1.35).
Washek started 17 of 18 games for the Golden Knights and finished fourth on the team in points with eight and tied for second in assists with four. He scored two goals on the year on just 10 shots on goal and helped solidify Gannon’s midfield throughout the year.
Payne is in his 11th year at Bloomsburg and for the first time in his career with the Huskies, is the PSAC East Coach of the Year after leading Bloomsburg to its first PSAC Tournament appearance since the 2003 season, finishing the year with a 10-6-2 overall record and a 5-2-1 mark in PSAC East play.
Thompson is the West Coach of the Year for the second straight year after leading Slippery Rock to a second place finish in the PSAC West and a pair of wins in the PSAC Tournament to win the 2009 PSAC title. The Rock will host this week’s upcoming NCAA regional, entering the tournament with a 17-3-1 overall record. The Rock finished 6-2 in PSAC West play this year.
This year’s all-conference teams featured 15 repeat all-conference selections from previous All-PSAC teams. Only one, East Stroudsburg’s Toric Robinson, is now a four-time all-conference selection as he was a first team selection the last two years after being a second team selection his freshman season. Bloomsburg’s Mike Jones and California’s Mike Luecke, both seniors, each earned their third career all-conference citation. Two freshman made each team, with Shippensburg’s Michael Celius and Bloomsburg’s Phillips being named to the All-East team and Gannon’s Washek and Slippery Rock’s Ben Lloyd being named to the West team.
Bloomsburg and West Chester led the way in the PSAC East with four selections each. In the West, four out of the five teams each had four selections, with Slippery Rock, Mercyhurst, Gannon and California each placing four on the all-conference team.
The PSAC men’s soccer all-conference teams were changed this year due a vote by the league’s head coaches. Instead of a first and second team in each division, there is now only one all-conference team, with an expanded number of selections on each team. Each team consists of four forwards, five midfielders, five defenders and two goalkeepers.
