Lock Haven, Pa. -- Behind freshman standout Neely Spence, Shippensburg claimed the team title at the 2008 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women’s Cross Country Championship.  The race was hosted by Lock Haven University at its Foundation Fields complex.

Made up of a scoring unit all in their freshman or sophomore class years, Shippensburg registered 70 points to narrowly defeat Slippery Rock, which totaled 73.   For Shippensburg, it was the third women’s title in school history, and the first since back-to-back crowns in 1996 and 1997.

Spence won the individual title after crossing the tape at 20:59, 17 seconds ahead of Slippery Rock’s Jennifer Harpp.  In all, Shippensburg placed four All-PSAC runners for their top 20 finishes.  Following Spence were sophomores Mary Dell (11th) and Abby Huber (12th), and freshman Katie Frey (18th).  Sophomore Lindsey Hollenshead rounded out the scoring for the Lady Raiders by finishing 28th.

Slippery Rock had three all-conference runners in Harpp, Jamie Wright (6th) and Laura Mucho (10th).  Crystal Burnick (23rd) and Katie Bork (32nd) also figured in the Rock’s scoring efforts.

Kutztown (115 points) and Edinboro (118 points) finished third and fourth, respectively, while last year’s champion, Bloomsburg, and Indiana (Pa.), tied for fifth at 159 points.
