Men's and Women's Golf Athletes of the Week - 5 Tuesday, October 7, 2008 9:59 AM California's SOPHIE HUFNAGEL and Clarion's JARED SCHMADER continued their outstanding seasons by claiming medalist honors in their respective events. For their efforts, they were crowned as PSAC Athletes of the Week in the sport of golf. Women’s Sophie Hufnagel Junior Vilsbiburg, Germany Hufnagel earned medalist honors at the Gannon Invitational, finishing the tournament with a score of 7-over par. Her score of 151 was two strokes better than teammate and second-place finisher Simone DeSouza, and included a first-day round of 73, three strokes better than any other round for the tournament. Hufnagel led a Vulcan squad that won the 10-team tournament by 29 strokes. Men’s Jared Schmader - Clarion Sophomore Cooperstown (Maplewood) For the third straight tournament, Schmader took medalist honors, this time by firing a 4-under par two-day total of 139 at California’s Vulcan Invitational. Tied with IUP’s Gavin Smith, Schmader won the first playoff hole to earn the tournament’s top spot, beating out 60 other competitors. His effort helped Clarion finish second of nine teams, five strokes off team champion IUP.
