Hershey, Pa. - California (Pa.) shot a team total of 26-over par 602 to claim the team title at the inaugural PSAC Women's Golf Championship on Sunday at the Hershey Links Golf Club in Hummelstown. The PSAC Golf Championship was broken off into two championship tournaments this year for the first time, a men's and a women's championship, after being just one dual-sex tournament in past years.
Cal's Simone DeSouza won individual medalist honors by posting a score of two-over par 146 (75-71) to win the individual title by three strokes over teammate Jenna Rothermel, who finished second at five-over 149 (76-73). Dianne Luke of Cal made it a clean sweep in the top three spots for the Vulcans, as she shot an eight-over 152 (76-76) for the tournament. Another Vulcan, Sophie Hufnagel as well as Kutztown's Kelli Pry tie for fourth at 11-over par. DeSouza's 71 in Sunday's final round was the only round under par for the tournament.
In addition to the top five, Kutztown's Samantha Rumbley, Krista Tressler and Chelsea Corbo, Gannon's Jessica Slonaker and Emily Quinn, and Cal's Melissa Davis were all automatically named All-PSAC by virtue of having finished in the top 10. DeSouza was also named the MVP of the tournament in addition to her individual medal.
Kutztown finished second in the team competition at 61-over par 637, 35 strokes behind Cal. League newcomers Gannon and Mercyhurst finished third and fourth, respectively, while West Chester placed fifth. Clarion and East Stroudsburg, who are both fielding women's squads for the first time this fall, rounded out the field in sixth and seventh.
