PSAC Football Preview - Week 4
(September 19, 2007)
 
This week marks the last full week of crossover contests before divisional play begins in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.  Starting next week, three teams in each division will square off against each other in divisional play while the remaining teams in each division will complete the weekly schedule with a crossover game. 

The highlighted contest on Saturday features West Chester at Shippensburg (3 p.m.).  Other PSAC games include Cheyney at Edinboro (1 p.m.), Millersville at IUP (1 p.m), Lock Haven at Youngstown St. (4 p.m.), Bloomsburg at Clarion (6 p.m), Kutztown at Slippery Rock (7 p.m).

The West Chester-Shippensburg game is
the third of 11 PSAC contests to be broadcast state-wide on SPORTSfever Television Network in the "APSCUF College Football Game of the Week."  The broadcast will be available through a network of Pennsylvania commercial television stations with a potential audience of 4.8 million cable, satellite and over-the-air households.  (SPORTSfever Release)

On the national scene, three PSAC teams are ranked in the top 25 of both the AFCA and D2Football.com polls.  Bloomsburg exited both polls after last week's 42-41 loss to Edinboro, marking the first time in 25 weeks the Huskies have not occupied a ranking.  Also, IUP enters both polls for the first time this season at No. 22.

Series:
West Chester owns a 19-8-1 record against Shippensburg.  The Red Raiders last defeated the Golden Rams in 2004 by a 24-21 overtime decision. The loss marked the only game all season that West Chester would lose against a PSAC opponent as the Golden Rams rebounded to defeat Shippensburg, 33-28, in the second round of the NCAA II playoffs later that year.

Players to Watch:
RB Osagie Osunde - Scored two rushing touchdowns last week to become the school's all-time leading in that category (42).
QB Bill Zwaan - Tossed a career-high five touchdowns against Clarion, and now has 44 career touchdown passes (6th - WCU).
LB Lateef Ferguson - 2006 PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year leads the squad with 28 total tackles.
Current Trends:
Six of Zwaan's seven touchdown passes to date have been for 17 yards or longer.  He has connected with five different receivers for a score, including a 79-yard bomb to Mike Washington.
Shippensburg

WR Howard Chavous - 198.7 all-purpose yards per game (9th - DII)
QB Gabe Maiocco - 52-of-107, 586 yards, 3 TDs, 195.3 ypg
P Kyler Ford - 24-for-980 yards, 40.8 yards per punt, 10 punts inside the 20-yard line
Current Trends:
The Red Raiders have scored less than 20 points in each of their first three games, recording just 14 points total in the second half.  Shippensburg entered the Kutztown contest a perfect 4-for-4 in the red zone but squandered scoring opportunities as the Red Raiders managed just two scores in six chances inside Kutztown's 20-yard line.  Defensively, giving up big plays continues to plague Shippensburg.

 

 

 

Kutztown at Slippery Rock 7 p.m.

Series:
Kutztown will try for its first win against Slippery Rock in five tries.  The series began in 1984 with Slippery Rock taking a 21-6 decision at KutztownSlippery Rock took last year's decision by a 34-10 ledger.

Current Trends:
Kutztown is off to a 2-1 start for the first time since 2004.  The Golden Bears have the third best pass offense in the PSAC (260.3 ypg) and are averaging nearly 15 yards per catch (14.2).
Slippery Rock

Current Trends:
In the last two games, Slippery Rock quarterback Nate Crookshank has tossed seven touchdowns while The Rock defense, led by defensive end Clint Forsha, has held opponents to just 12 points and less than 160 yards receiving.  The offense ranks first in the PSAC at 463.3 yards total offense while the defense is third in total defense, allowing 264.0 ypg.



Bloomsburg at Clarion - 6 p.m.


Series 
Bloomsburg looks to knot the series at four wins apiece as Clarion holds a 4-3-1 advantage.

Current Trends:
Bloomsburg has lost back-to-back games for the first time since the second and third games of the 2003 season when the Huskies fell to Shippensburg, 21-0, and Lock Haven, 17-15.  The last time Bloomsburg lost three consecutive games was in 1993 (American Int'l, 24-6; Millersville, 26-0; Clarion 40-18).
Clarion
Overall: 0-3

Players to Watch:
Freshmen - Clarion has played as many as 25 freshmen in each of its first three contests.
Safeties - Two freshmen made their first starts side by side last week in Nick Sipes and Shawn Sopic.
RB Eddie Immanuel - 61-for-284 yards, 94.7 yards per game
QBs - Expect to see either red-shirt freshman Gino Rometo or sophomore Tyler Huether under center.
Current Trends:
Clarion has yet to score a touchdown in the second half.  The Golden Eagles have been limited to a field goal in the third quarter, marking their only score.



Millersville at IUP - 1 p.m.


Series:
IUP leads the all-time series 8-5, with its last win against Millersville coming in 2004 by a 27-19 count.  The Marauders upended IUP last season, 17-14.

Current Trends:
Millersville's defense has scored 19 of the team's 31 points.  The loss of four-year starting quarterback Dan Csencsitz has taken its toll on the Marauders offense, as Millersville has managed just 113 yards passing in three games.
IUP

Players to Watch:
LB Terrence Jackson - Helped ensure IUP's victory over ESU last week with a 49-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the final minutes.  Leads team with 12 TT, 4TFL
LB Carliss Jeter - Team-high three sacks
WR Anthony Rodriguez - Leads team with 116.5 all-purpose yards
Current Trends:
Despite having just two returning starters on the offensive line, the Crimson Hawks have allowed only one sack this season.  Defensively, IUP has recovered three fumble returns for a touchdown in two games.



Lock Haven at Youngstown St. - 4 p.m.


Series:
Youngstown St. has defeated Lock Haven each of the two times the teams met.  The Penguins won 38-7 in 2001, and 36-6 in 1966.

The Penguins capitalized on four interceptions a week ago as the offense turned three of those picks into touchdowns.  The defense has also held its last two opponents to fewer than 100 yards rushing.


 

Cheyney at Edinboro - 1 p.m.

Series:
Edinboro owns a 4-1 record against Cheyney.  The Wolves won the first-ever meeting between the squads with a 13-12 decision in 1967.

Opponents have held Cheyney scoreless in the first and fourth quarters.  The Wolves kicking game is a perfect 4-for-4 in PAT attempts.  In comparison, Cheyney completed just 1-of-10 attempts a year ago.

Current Trends:
Edinboro has led the league in rushing defense the past two years, allowing 70.5 yards per game in 2006 and 53.7 yards per game in 2005.  This year, the Fighting Scots have allowed 186.3 rushing yards, 10th-best in the PSAC.

Slippery Rock
