Qualify for NCAA Basketball Tournament
- (March 9, 2008)
Three
women's basketball teams will represent the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in the
upcoming NCAA Championship Tournament. The
announcement of the tournament selections was made
Sunday night by the NCAA.
Indiana (Pa.) automatically qualified for the
championship by winning the PSAC Tournament on
Saturday, defeating California (Pa.) by a score of
67-63.
The Crimson Hawks earned the NCAA East Region's No.
1 seed and will host the eight-team region on March
14, 15 and 17. IUP owns a 27-4 record and
enters its second-straight NCAA tournament.
Two other women's teams have earned at-large berths
from the NCAA East Region Selection Committee.
California (Pa.) is ranked second in the East
Regional and will be making its seventh consecutive
appearance in the tournament. The Vulcans
(24-6) will square off against seventh-seeded
Millersville (24-5) in the opening round. In
the two squads' only regular-season meeting,
California posted a 73-65 decision. On the
same side of the bracket, No. 3 Anderson (27-3) will
take on No. 6 Fairmont St. (25-6).
IUP will face No. 8 Mount Olive in the opening
round. This is the first ever NCAA appearance
for the Conference Carolinas champion. On the
same side of the bracket, No. 5 Shepherd, also
making its first NCAA appearance, will take on No. 4
seed West Liberty St.
