Indoor Track and Field Athletes Prepare for National Championships
(March 6, 2008)

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has 35 indoor track and field athletes who will represent the league at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.  The two-day event will be held March 14-15 in Myers Field House on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato.

On the women's side, 14 student-athletes will participate in six events, including one relay.  For the men, 21 student-athletes hope to bring home gold in seven individual events and two relays.

Shippensburg will be represented by its record-breaking distance medley squad of Abby Huber, Shannon Hare, Jamie McCollum and Mary Dell.

A trio of Slippery Rock women in Lacey Cochran, Jennifer Hansen and Whitney Hendershot represent The Rock.  All three have set new Rock records in their respective events while Hansen also set the conference mark in the pole vault with a mark of 13-1.5.  Cochran will compete in the 400-meter dash while Hendershot will compete in the high jump.

The East Stroudsburg duo of Lynn Mayer and Janelle Smith will battle Hendershot in the high jump.  Mayer and Smith both recorded qualifying heights of 5-7.25.

Holly Urban (California), Maureen Newell (IUP), Priscilla Jennings (Millersville), Danielle Scardino (West Chester) and Lock Haven's Chelsea Morse round out the women's qualifiers.

For the men, California (5), Mansfield (4), Kutztown (3), Slippery Rock (2), East Stroudsburg (2), West Chester (2), Shippensburg (2) and Lock Haven have all qualified student-athletes for the championship.

California's Chris Clark is seeded second in the 5000-meter run with his automatic qualifying time of 14:02.52.  He will be joined by the Vulcans 1,600-meter relay squad of Brad Rager, CJ Baker, Dadre Williams and Frank Ehrensberger.

Mansfield's Chris Cummings hopes to bring home a gold in the mile run and add another chapter to his epic career as a Mountaineer.  He will join Dave Sanford, Bryan Falcone and Victor Garcia as part of the distance medley squad.

Kutztown is represented in three individual events by Rusty Smith (60-meter hurdles) and James Dart and Steve Tyson in the shot put.
