PSAC Announces Swimming Awards
(March 31, 2008)

West Chester's Max Bernardes and Edinboro's Brooke Heath have been selected as the 2007-08 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Swimming Athletes of the Year.  This is Bernardes' first honor while Heath was named the Rookie of the Year in 2005.

West Chester's Ben Kuntz was named the male Rookie of the Year while Lock Haven's Amanda Terray garnered the same honors for the women.  Honored by their peers as league Coaches of the Year were Bloomsburg's Dave Rider (women) and West Chester's Jamie Rudisill (men).

Bernardes, a sophomore from King George, Va. (King George), claimed four All-America certificates at the 2008 NCAA II Swimming & Diving Championships en route to posting two new conference bests.  He finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle as he touched the wall in 9:14.25 and set a new conference record.  He also set a new conference mark in the 400-yard individual medley with his time of 3:58.26, good enough for fourth place.  Bernardes earned another pair of All-America honors in the 500-yard freestyle (5th - 4:30.53) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (6th - 15:42.11).  The sophomore also took home three gold medals at the PSAC Championships, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:32.64) and 400-yard individual medley (4:09.64) while leading off the 800-yard freestyle relay (6:50.01).

Heath
, a senior from Woodstock, Ontario, claimed All-America honors in three events at the NCAA II Swimming & Diving Championships.  She finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke for the third consecutive year with her time of 2:17.94, setting a new Edinboro record in the process.  Heath also finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.43) and fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.75).  Her efforts helped the Fighting Scots to reach their goal of a top 20 finish, placing 18th overall.  At the PSAC Championships, Heath claimed three individual first-place finishes en route to earning the meet's Outstanding Swimmer award.  She took home gold in the 200-yard IM (2:06.00), 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.54) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.72).  The senior also was a member of the third-place 200-yard medley relay team that recorded a new Edinboro best time of 1:49.68.  Heath concluded her career as an 11-time All-American and 14-time All-PSAC honoree.

Terray, a rookie from Coaldale (Panther Valley HS), had a record-setting year in her freshman campaign for the Lady Eagles.  She became the first woman in Lock Haven history to win a PSAC title, qualify for the NCAA Championships and earn All-America status.  Terray claimed All-PSAC honors in the 100-yard backstroke (57.56)and the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.27), taking home gold in the latter.   At the 2008 NCAA II Swimming & Diving Championships, Terray also earned honors in those same two events.  In the 100-yard backstroke, she finished sixth with a time of 57.11 while in the 200-yard backstroke she touched the wall in 2:01.95, good for third-place and a school record.  Additionally, she was the only freshman in the championship heat.

Kuntz, a freshman from Germany, finished the season as a two-time All-America honoree.  He captured gold in the 200-yard butterfly at the NCAA II Swimming & Diving National Championships, touching the wall in 1:45.98, setting a school and conference record in the process.  He also finished as an All-American in the 100-yard butterfly, again breaking both the West Chester and PSAC record in a time of 49.14.  Kuntz was one of four Golden Rams who earned multi All-America selections and helped West Chester finish in third place, equaling its highest finish ever at the national meet.  His performance at the conference championship helped guide the Golden Rams to their 10th-straight PSAC title.  Kuntz finished as a four-time All-PSAC honoree, claiming gold in the 100-yard butterfly (50.50) and second in both the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:20.99) and 200-yard butterfly (1:51.95).  He also helped the Golden Rams 400-yard medley relay team to a first-place finish (3:25.76).

Rider completed his 22nd season at the helm of Bloomsburg women's swimming program.  He has an overall record of 142-77-1 and has coached over 50 different swimmers to 90 plus All-America citations.  This season, Rider's squad finished with a 5-4 record and placed fifth at the PSAC Championships with 328 points.

Rudisill finished his 21st season as the Golden Rams leader, earning the league's Coach of the Year Award for the seventh time.  This season, Rudisill guided West Chester to its 10th-straight PSAC title and a third-place finish at the NCAA II Swimming & Diving Championships, equaling the school's highest finish set in 2000 and marking the seventh top 5 finish the last nine years.  He has guided two individuals and three relays to national championships, including Kuntz and the 800-yard free relay team this year.  The Golden Rams finished the 2007-08 season with a 6-3 dual meet record, taking second at the Maryland Invitational and finishing with 919 points at the PSAC Championships.
