Every Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference team begins divisional play this
weekend. Twelve teams start divisional play on
Friday March 28th with doubleheaders. The Eastern
Division has East
Stroudsburg traveling to Shippensburg, Kutztown is
at Millersville and West Chester will head to
Mansfield. The Western Division has Slippery Rock
hosting IUP, Edinboro traveling to California, and
Lock Haven hosting Clarion. Bloomsburg is the
only team not in divisional action on Friday. The
Huskies will begin their PSAC East ampaign on
Saturday, March 29th when they host East Stroudsburg.
In the
Eastern Division, Kutztown was picked first in the PSAC
Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Golden Bears
look to repeat as Eastern Division regular- season champs
and avenge their league tournament loss to Lock Haven.
Kutztown has started the season 23-5. The
Golden Bears' offense has been sparked by Ashley
Fitzgerald (.434 avg.) and 2007 PSAC East Player of
the Year Steph Denlinger (.405 avg.). The
pitching staff is anchored by 2007 PSAC East Pitcher
of the Year Katlin Arbogast (1.92 ERA).
Millersville has climbed over .500 as they have
started the season 10-9. Lindsay Hosier (.372
avg.), Janelle Mrackovich (.350 avg.), Emily Flieger
(1.48 ERA) and the Lady Marauders look to pull off
two strong wins to start their Eastern Division
season.
After
being picked to finish last in the preseason coaches
poll, West Chester has started the season with a
promising 17-6 record. The Golden Rams look to
carry the early season success into divisional play
as they take on Mansfield. West Chester's
offense is led by Erin MacNamee (.476 avg.) and the
pitching staff is solidified by Shanon Padula (1.08
ERA). Mansfield's L Knapp has posted a stellar
0.66 ERA through 21 innings, as the
Mountaineers have started their season with a 6-3
record. Knapp's are is backed by the hot bat
of Nicole Yost (.524 avg.).
Shippensburg looks to return to its 2006 form.
The 2006 Lady Raiders fell to Lock Haven in the
finals of the PSAC Tournament. Lori Knopf
(.459 avg.), current PSAC East Player of the Week
Courtney Steele (.365 avg.) and pitching ace Dani
Shields (1.93 ERA) and the rest of the Lady Raiders
(15-11) will welcome East Stroudsburg (6-11).
The Lady Warriors have started slow, but offensive
leader Briana Malachowski (.359 avg.) and hurler
Kristen Halvorsen (1.99 ERA) are set to change their
recent fortunes.
Bloomsburg is currently 17-2 and riding a nine-game
winning streak. The Huskies are in action on
Saturday against East Stroudsburg.
Bloomsburg's offense is sparked by Tiff Corliss
(.412 avg.) and Nikki Shiko (.392 avg.). The
ace of the pitching staff is current PSAC East
Pitcher of the Week, Ashley Lynn. Lynn has
posted a 0.78 ERA this season. Lynn is joined
in the rotation by Tara Reed (0.74 ERA). The
Huskies were picked to finish second in the PSAC poll.
In the
Western Division, the three-time defending PSAC West
and two-time defending PSAC Tournament Champions,
Lock Haven will start its 2008 divisional run off
at home again Clarion. The Lady Eagles have
posted a 17-5 record this season. Two-time
NCAA Division II Pitcher of the Year, Kristen Erb
leads Lock Haven's pitching staff with a 0.42 ERA.
Erb also leads the offensive attack with a .333
average. Clarion looks to upset the defending
champions and gain some momentum for divisional
play. Clarion's offense is led by Ashley
Grisnik (.400 avg.) the Lady Eagles have started the
season 1-4.
Edinboro
began the season 8-8 and was picked to finish second
in the PSAC poll. The Fighting
Scots are led by the powerful arm of Vanessa Rose
(1.09 ERA), while Dana Webb (.347 avg.) leads the
offense. Edinboro will be heading to California.
The Vulcans are currently 6-4 on the year and
primed for divisional play. Team leaders
Nicole Bellevance (.478 avg.), Kayleigh Braim (.424
avg.) and pitcher Sonia Petrosoniak (0.23 ERA).
In the
final Western Division game, Slippery Rock will host IUP. Slippery Rock has jumped out to an early
season 12-2 record. Pitchers Lisa Getgen (1.40
ERA) and Shauna Walker (1.09 ERA) anchor the
pitching staff, while Shardea Croes (.484 avg.) and
Stacey Rhoades (.394 avg.) have supplied the
offense. IUP, who was picked to finish third
in the PSAC poll has started out
slow at 4-14. Jamie Fischer (.241 avg.) leads
the offense and Erin Holloway (3.03 ERA) heads the
pitching staff.
