PSAC Divisional Baseball Play Begins This Weekend
(March 26, 2008)

All 12 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference teams begin divisional play this weekend with each team playing a home doubleheader and an away doubleheader against the same team.  The action kicks off on Friday, March 28th in the Eastern Division as East Stroudsburg travels to Mansfield, Kutztown is at Bloomsburg and West Chester plays host to Millersville.  Western Division play also begins Friday with IUP traveling to Clarion, California hosting Lock Haven and Slippery Rock at Shippensburg.  The teams will switch venues on Saturday, March 29th for another two game set.

In the Eastern Division, West Chester has started off the season strong.  The Golden Rams have compiled a 21-2 record to this point.  West Chester was picked in the PSAC Preseason Coaches' Poll to finish at the top of the conference standings.  West Chester looks to make the prediction a reality as the Golden Rams start off their run with two home games against Millersville, then travel to Millersville for two more. The Golden Rams' offense is led by Kyle Bechter (.419 avg.) and Matt Cotellese (.397 avg.).  The pitching staff is anchored by Dave Slusser (1.12 ERA) and Jason Bowman (1.45 ERA). Another Eastern Division front runner is Kutztown.  The Golden Bears are trying to repeat as the Eastern Division regular-season champions and build off of their school record 49-win season from a year ago. Team leaders Chad Lightcap (.464 avg.), Darin Gorski (3.52 ERA) and Kutztown will travel to Bloomsburg where the Huskies are looking to catch their stride.  Bloomsburg has started off slow, but has its sights set on a surprise move in the division. The Huskies are led by Tony Donofry (.319 avg.) and pitcher Mike Griggs (4.50 ERA)

In the final Eastern Division game Friday, Mansfield will play host to East Stroudsburg.  The Mountaineers have had a solid start at 14-7 as Abram Yeakel (.526 avg.) and pitchers Justin Garcia (2.12 ERA) and Shane Ryan (2.81 ERA) have set the tone .  Mansfield will attempt to keep its string of strong play going, while the Warriors at 9-13, look to make some moves of their own.  East Stroudsburg has been led by Chris Zsenak (.419 avg.), and the pitching staff has been headed by Dave Boyer (2.67 ERA)

In the Western Division, the defending PSAC Tournament Champion Shippensburg will first play host to Slippery Rock and Slippery Rock will return the favor Saturday.  The contest promises to be a battle, as Shippensburg enters the set with a 16-11 record and Slippery Rock Boast an 10-5 mark.  Slippery Rock was picked to finish second and Shippensburg was chosen third in the PSAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.  Shippensburg's offense is led by Justin Garber (.478 avg.) and Rick Shumway (.397 avg.), while Tim Freshour (2.75 ERA) has anchored the pitching staff.  Slippery Rock has a trio of Scott Bender (.406 avg.) Billy Herman (.396 avg.) and M.J. Parsons (.395 avg.) leading the offense.  Rich Hocanson (2.25 ERA) has bolstered the pitching rotation.

California has started its season off with a 6-6 record, but is geared for its Western Division title defense. The Vulcans are led by slugger Sam Dimatteo (.378 avg.) and pitcher Jon Squeglia (2.65 ERA) California hosts 9-13 Lock Haven Friday before traveling to Lock Haven on Saturday. The Bald Eagles attack is led by Mark Strouse (.382 avg.) and the pitching staff is anchored by Tyler Rumsey (3.60 ERA) The Vulcans were chosen to finish in first in the PSAC poll.

Clarion and IUP will face off in the final Western Division game.  IUP is currently 16-5 on the season and looking to make an impact in the West.  The Crimson Hawks were picked to finish fourth by the coaches, but they look to keep their streak of strong play rolling through divisional play. IUP's offense is headed by Paul Bingham (.553 avg.) and Shawn Schwarz (.515 avg.). The Crimson Hawk pitching staff is led by Jake Rougeaux (2.29 ERA). Clarion has started the season 6-2 and began the season with a 6-game winning streak.  After dropping their last two contests, the Golden Eagles are primed to start a new streak.  Clarion is led by Jason Krimsky (.500 avg.) and Jonathan Giuliani who has a 0.00 ERA in five innings pitched.
