- PSAC Indoor Track
& Field Awards
-
(March 24, 2008)
Representatives from four different Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference schools have been tabbed as respective
league Athletes of the Year for the sport of Indoor Track
and Field. The selections are made by the league's
head coaches.
West Chester's Danielle Scardino and Slippery Rock's
Jennifer Hansen garnered honors on the women's side.
Scardino was named the Track Athlete of the Year and
Hansen claimed Field Athlete of the Year. For
the men, Chris Cummings of Mansfield was named the
Track Athlete of the Year while Kutztown's James
Dart earned the honors for Field Athlete of the
Year.
Slippery Rock's Whitney Hendershot and West
Chester's Jarrett Eaton were named league Rookies of
the Year. Head coaches John Papa of Slippery
Rock and Dave Osanitch of Shippensburg were selected
by their peers as Men's and Women's Coaches of the
Year, respectively.
Scardino, a senior who hails from Levittown (Neshaminy
HS), just missed a spot in the finals at the NCAA II
National Championships as she placed ninth in the
60-meter hurdles with a new West Chester best time
of 8.655. Prior to the national championship
meet, Scardino was named the women's Track Athlete
of the Meet, as well as the Overall Co-MVP, at the
2008 PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
She took home gold in three events at that meet,
winning the 55-meter dash (7.22), 200-meter dash
(25.72) and the 55-meter hurdles (8.17).
Earlier in the season at the PSAC East Challenge,
the senior also completed a gold-medal sweep in the
same three events. In addition to her PSAC
accolades, the senior was also named the United
States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches'
Association East Region Athlete of the Year for her
efforts during her senior campaign.
Hansen, a junior out of Charleston, W. Va. (Capitol
HS) tied for third place at the NCAA II
Championships with her mark of 12-09.00 in the pole
vault and earned All-America honors in the process.
Hansen captured gold in the event at both the PSAC
West Challenge and the 2008 PSAC Indoor Track and
Field Championships, where she recorded a school and
conference best mark of 13-01.5 and was the Field
Athlete MVP. She was also honored by the
USTFCCA as the East Region's Field Athlete of the
Year. Hansen is now
a two-time All-American and the two-time defending PSAC Champion in the pole vault after finishing
third in the conference as a freshman.
Hendershot, a rookie from Salamanca, N.Y. (Salamanca
HS), earned All-America honors after tying for
fifth-place at the NCAA II National Championships in
the high jump with a mark of 5-07.25. At the
PSAC Championships, Hendershot set a new SRU best
and tied the all-time league record in the same
event with her mark of 5-09.25. At that meet,
she also placed sixth in the pentathlon and set a
new Rock record with 3,310 points. Her efforts
helped The Rock to a tie for first-place finish and
its second-straight women's indoor title.
A senior from Mansfield (Mansfield HS), Cummings
ended his Mountaineer career as one of the most
decorated student-athletes in Mansfield history.
He is the first Mountaineer to earn indoor track and
field All-America honors after placing sixth in the
mile in 2006. This season, Cummings placed
second in the mile (4:12.63) by just 0.01 seconds in
a photo finish to earn his second All-America honor.
A member of the distance medley relay squad,
Cummings' efforts helped the team earn Mansfield's
first trip to nationals after becoming the first
team DMR team to earn a PSAC title for the
Mountaineers. At the league championships,
Cummings was selected as an Overall Co-MVP of the
Meet after winning the mile and setting the field
house and meet record (4:11.84). The senior is
just one of two Mansfield indoor track and field
athletes to earn a PSAC title, winning the mile this
year and in 2004. For his career, he owns four
combined individual and relay top three finishes at
the PSAC Championships. As a member of the
cross country team, Cummings finished his career as
a four-time All-PSAC honoree, as well as becoming
Mansfield's first All-American with his 31st place
finish this fall.
Dart, a senior out of Havertown (Haverford HS),
placed seventh in the 2008 NCAA II National
Championships with his mark of 54-08.75 in the shot
put to earn his first All-America citation. At
the PSAC Championships, Dart placed second in the
shot put behind teammate Steve Tyson with his throw
of 54-00.05 while adding a fifth-place finish in the
weight throw with a distance of 54-03.75.
Earlier in the season at the Susquehanna Open, Dart
had a school record breaking a throw of 55-1.
A rookie from Roslyn (Abington HS), Eaton placed
third at the NCAA II Championships in the 60-meter
hurdles with his time of 7.88, setting a new West
Chester and PSAC record in the process. In
addition, Eaton owns the PSAC record in the 55-meter
hurdles with his time of 7.31, which he set at the
league championships with his first-place finish.
The freshman also came close to the league record in
the 55-meter dash at the PSAC Championships with his
time of 6.5 seconds, which was just off the
record pace of 6.32 held by Millersville's Gerald
Mack and Kutztown's Keith Crowell. For Eaton's
efforts, he was also named the USTFCCA East Region
Athlete of the Year.
Papa led his men's squad to its first-ever PSAC
Indoor Track and Field title while his women's squad
earned at least a share of its second-straight after
tying Shippensburg for the top honor in 2008.
The 21st-year head coach helped guide five
student-athletes to the NCAA Championships this
season, all of whom set SRU records in their
respective events. At the league
championships, Papa guided two individuals to PSAC
titles while two more added runner-up finishes.
This is Papa's 11th PSAC Coach of the Year Award and
11th USTFCCCA East Region Coach of the Year.
Osanitcsh earns his second PSAC Coach of the Year
honor after leading the Lady Raiders to the
program's first-ever indoor conference title with
its first-place tie with Slippery Rock and also
earned his third USTFCCCA East Region Coach of the
Year Award. Osanitcsh helped guided six
athletes to the NCAA II National Championships,
including the distance medley relay team, which was
the first relay team in school history to qualify
and set the all-time PSAC record. The group
also became the first women's relay team to earn
All-America honors after placing seventh at the NCAA
Championships.
