50th Annual PSAC Men's Swimming Championship Preview

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - The 50th Annual Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Men's Swimming Championships will be hosted from Thursday, February 21 through Sunday, February 24 at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg.

Following the completion of the 1,000-meter freestyle on Thursday evening, the remaining three days of competition will begin with preliminaries at 10:00 a.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m.

Tickets for the championship will be on sale at the door. All students attending a PSAC institution are admitted free with a valid student ID. Tickets for preliminary sessions are $5 for adults while tickets to finals sessions are $7. All-session passes are $35. Student prices are $2 per session and $10 for an all-session pass.

Last year, West Chester won its ninth consecutive championship and 20th overall with a four-day total of 907.5 points, 222.5 ahead of second-place Clarion who has won a total of 19 men's championships. Shippensburg finished in third for the second-straight year with a total of 622 points while Kutztown and Edinboro were separated by just two points for fourth and fifth, respectively.

FREESTYLE

50: Clarion’s Ryan Thiel finished third a year ago but enters as the highest ranked swimmer this season after an ‘A’ cut time of 20.58 that is the third-fastest in the nation … West Chester’s Brendan Fanslau is one place behind with his own ‘A’ cut time while Bill Marcum has also recorded an ‘A’ cut time for the Golden Rams … Shippensburg’s Gabe Oropollo and Clarion’s Andrew Claypool have recorded ‘B’ cut times and are also looking for success in the event.

100: West Chester’s Bill Marcum finished second last year to teammate Bart Ostrowski and is looking to leap one spot this year … the field is crowded, with four PSAC swimmers ranking second through fifth in the nation with NCAA cut times … among the crowded group is West Chester’s Brendan Fanslau and Clarion’s Ryan Thiel while West Chester's Matt Golebiewski and Shippensburg’s John Miller are also ranked in the top five.

200: West Chester holds the top four ranks while Matt Golebiewski holds the only ‘A’ cut time with a mark of 1:30.06 that the second-fastest in the nation this season … Clarion has three swimmers ranked in the top ten in the event, including Ryan Thiel … Kutztown’s Nicholas Williams and Shippensburg’s John Miller are also highly ranked and looking for victory.

500: West Chester possesses the top three ranked swimmers in the events, including Matt Golebiewski’s ‘A’ cut time of 4:32.14 that is the fifth-fastest mark in the nation ... Golden Ram swimmers Max Bernardes and Chris Salomone have recorded ‘A’ and ‘B’ cut times, respectively, while Clarion’s Dustin Fedunok has also recorded a ‘B’ cut time and will compete for the title.

1,000: Only two swimmers have recorded times faster than 10 minutes, but West Chester’s Max Bernardes has finished with a ‘B’ cut time of 9:27.23 and leads the group. His mark is the third fastest time in the nation this season ... Clarion’s Dustin Fedunok will provide stiff competition, as will West Chester’s Rodney King, Edinboro’s Nick Whiteman and Kutztown’s Greg Fournier.

1,650: West Chester’s Rodney King and Ben Kuntz will look to keep the 1,650 title with the Golden Rams, but Edinboro’s Nick Whiteman and Kutztown’s Greg Fournier have other ideas … Shippensburg’s Kevin Riley and Bloomsburg’s John King are also ranked within the top six and will look for strong showings for their respective schools.

BUTTERFLY

100: This looks to be a hotly contested event between West Chester and Shippensburg. West Chester owns the top four seeds, all of whom have posted NCAA cut times and are separated by less than one second. Devin Canfield and Ben Kuntz have both posted NCAA "A" cut times with Canfield seeded first at 50.21 seconds and Kuntz second just 0.02 seconds behind. Bill Marcum, who is seeded third, finished second last year while Canfield came in fourth ... Shippensburg owns the next two seeds, including fifth-seeded Brian Taylor who placed third a year ago ... six of the top nine seeds are from West Chester.

200: Like the 100, West Chester dominates the event with three swimmers seeded in the top four. Ben Kuntz is seeded first with an NCAA "A" cut time of 1:48.76 which is over three seconds faster than teammate David Smoker who is the returning champion in the event and has also posted an NCAA "A" cut time ... Brian Taylor of Shippensburg is seeded third after finishing second last year. While West Chester has three of the top four seeds, Shippensburg has three of the top seven as Taylor is followed by Alan Snyder (fifth) and Kevin Riley (seventh).

BREASTSTROKE

100: This could be a strong event for West Chester whose three qualifiers are all seeded in the top four with NCAA cut times, including the top two. Like the 200 IM, Marek Malopolski is the top seed, but was a scratch in last year's event. He has the lone NCAA "A" cut time of 56.45 seconds which is over two seconds ahead of teammate William McClernan who is seeded second ... Last year's runner-up, Rich Eckert of Clarion, is seeded third while West Chester's Peter Madueno is seeded fourth after finishing third a year ago ... another solid contender will be sixth-seeded Sean Bonifas of Kutztown who finished fifth last year.

200: The championship in the 200 looks to be decided by the same contenders as the 100. Marek Malopolski is again the top seed, possessing a large advantage over teammate William McClernan. Malopolski has an NCAA "A" cut time of 2:03.22 which is over four seconds faster than McClernan's NCAA "B" cut time of 2:07.30 ... the top four finishers from a year ago, return for this year, highlighted by defending champion Rich Eckert of Clarion who is seeded third. West Chester's Peter Madueno finished second and is seeded fourth while Shippensburg's John Miller placed fourth and is seeded fifth. Derek Sapp of Edinboro finished third last year and is seeded seventh this year.

BACKSTROKE

100: Three of the top four finishers from last year's championship return and are seeded in the top three this year, highlighted by defending champion Pawel Glowiak of IUP who is seeded third. West Chester's Devin Canfield placed second a year ago and is seeded second this year while Clarion's Mike Kerr, who finished fourth last year, is back as the top seed this year. All three swimmers posted NCAA "B" cut times and are separated by just 0.07 seconds from first to third ... Edinboro's Brandon Davidson and West Chester's Jeremy Butler who placed fifth and sixth, respectively, a year ago, are seeded sixth and seventh this year.

200: Devin Canfield and Mike Kerr are expected to battle for the championship in the 200 as well as both are the two top seeds. Canfield will be looking for his second-straight title while Kerr is looking to improve on his fourth-place finish a year ago ... West Chester also boasts the third and fourth seeds in Chris Salomone and Jeremy Butler. Salomone had three top-10 finishes as a freestyle swimmer a year ago, including a third-place showing in the 500 free. Meanwhile, Butler came in fifth in the event a year ago.

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY

200: IUP's Pawel Glowiak finished second at last year's championship with a time of 1:54.10 and enters this year seeded eighth in a time of 1:59.52 ... Marek Malopolski of West Chester is one of two swimmers who have a posted an NCAA "B" cut time in the event and is the top seed with a time of 1:54.26. Shippensburg's Josh Nyce is seeded second with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:56.71. Malopolski was a scratch in last year's event while Nyce will be competing in his first PSAC championship ... Glowiak is the only swimmer among those seeded in the top-eight who advanced to the championship final a year ago.

400: West Chester's Mark Bernardes is the returning champion and is the favorite to win his second-straight title as he is seeded first with an NCAA "A" cut time of 4:00.00. He is the only swimmer among the 14 entries to have posted an NCAA cut time and he is seeded almost 12 seconds ahead of Shippensburg's Josh Nyce who is second at 4:11.99 ... Andrew Soisson of Clarion finished fifth at last year's championships and is seeded seventh this year. Teammate John Wallace, who finished 11th a year ago, is seeded eighth.

RELAYS

200 Freestyle: West Chester’s team of Brendan Fanslau, Matt Golebiewski, Josh Pauley and Bill Marcum enters the Championships as the highest ranked squad having posted an NCAA mark of 1:22.37 but will have to fend off strong competition from Clarion and Shippensburg … the Golden Eagles will be looking to repeat their title from last year while Bloomsburg and Kutztown are among the other schools vying for a victory in the event.

400 Freestyle: The West Chester quartet of Brendan Fanslau, Matt Golebiewski, Rodney King and Bill Marcum leads the pack with an NCAA mark, but Clarion and Shippensburg will look for the victory as well. Kutztown and Bloomsburg round out the top-five from across the conference.

800 Freestyle: Already with an NCAA mark under its belt, the West Chester squad of Matt Golebiewski, Chris Salomone, Ben Kuntz and Brendan Fanslau are looking for a PSAC title … Clarion and Shippensburg are similarly ranked and will look to challenge the Golden Rams at the top.

200 Medley: West Chester and Clarion have recorded NCAA times and are the top two ranks in the conference … the Golden Ram squad of Devin Canfield, Marek Malopolski, Brenden Fanslau and Bill Marcum enter as the top ranks, but Shippensburg and Edinboro are also among the prime competitors in the event.

400 Medley: West Chester and Clarion have recorded NCAA times and are looking for the top mark … the Golden Ram squad of Devin Canfield, Marek Malopolski, Ben Kuntz and Bill Marcum enter as the top ranks, but Shippensburg and Edinboro are also among the prime competitors in the event.

Slippery Rock
