Bloomsburg leads the competition for the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference’s Dixon Trophy, the award
given out to the league’s top overall athletic program.
The compilation of the standings are through the
completion of the 2007 calendar year.
Bloomsburg leads the race with 69 points while Edinboro
is just one-half point behind at 68.5. IUP (64.5),
California (60) and West Chester (58.5) round out the
top five. The next three spots are closely
contested as Shippensburg sits sixth with 57.5 points,
Slippery Rock seventh with 57 points and East
Stroudsburg eight with 55.5 points.
Bloomsburg captured its first ever women's cross country
title while adding a second-place finish in Eastern
Division football. Field hockey also contributed a
second-place finish while wrestling took third at the
PSAC Championships and men's cross country added a
fifth-place showing.
Just a half point behind the Huskies, Edinboro captured
two men's titles in wrestling and cross country.
The women's soccer team advanced to the league
semifinals for the first time in team history and the
women's volleyball squad returned to the PSAC tournament
after a one-year hiatus. The women's cross country
team also contributed with a third-place finish.
IUP captured two titles, winning its first ever
field hockey crown along with its first golf
championship since 2004. The Crimson Hawks also
finished as runners-up in Western Division football and
women's cross country. Women's soccer contributed
with a fifth-place showing.
California generated its points through a women's
volleyball championship and a share of the Western
Division football crown with its perfect 6-0 finish,
13-1 overall. A strong second-place showing by the
women's golf squad along with a fifth-place finish by
men's soccer contributed to the Vulcans ranking.
West Chester, last year's runner-up in the final Dixon
trophy standings, is just 1.5 points behind California.
The Golden Rams captured PSAC titles in football and
women's soccer, while adding solid showings in women's
volleyball and men's soccer.
The presentation of the Dixon Trophy will take place
after the spring sports season. The final determination
of the trophy winner is based only on an institution’s
best 12 finishes - the top six men’s and top six women’s
placements. This year will mark the 12th presentation of
the Dixon Trophy, named after F. Eugene Dixon Jr.,
former chairman of the Board of Governors of the State
System of Higher Education, of which all 14 universities
of the PSAC are members.
