East Stroudsburg's Brittany Staub and Slippery
Rock's Megan McGrath have been selected by the
league's coaches as the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Women's Soccer Athletes of the Year in
their respective Divisions. Staub represents
the Eastern Division and McGrath the Western
Division.
Also earning honors were West Chester's Sarah Oswald
and IUP's Lauren Mizik, who were named the Eastern
and Western Division Rookie of the Year,
respectively.
Rob Berkowitz, in his first year at East
Stroudsburg, earned Eastern Division Coach of the
Year honors while Edinboro's Gary Kagiavas took home
the honor in the West.
Staub, a senior back from Levittown (Neshaminy HS),
earns E. Stroudsburg's first Athlete of the Year
honors since Justina Woolf in 2001. She
started all 20 games for the Warriors and headed up
a defense that allowed just 24 goals and posted
seven shutouts.
A senior from Vernon, N.J., McGrath owns the
league's third-best point total (35, 1.39 per game).
Her 10 goals rank 10th in the PSAC while her five
assists are good for seventh. In addition,
McGrath owns five game winning goals in divisional
play, a figure that is tops among the league.
She will lead her squad into NCAA postseason play on
Friday, November 9 against Adelphi as The Rock
competes in the tournament for the second straight
season.
Oswald, a forward from Macungie (Emmaus HS),
will lead the Golden Rams into the NCAA postseason
as the Northeast Region's No. 2 seed. West
Chester will play the winner of the Slippery Rock/
Adelphi contest on Sunday at Noon. The rookie
ranks second in the league in points (36, 1.89 per
game) and goals (17), with her 17 tallies nearly
double the amount of her nearest teammate. She
was also a first-team Eastern Division selection.
Mizik, a midfielder from Irwin (Hempfield HS), is
the second straight IUP player to be named Western
Division Rookie of the Year. She started 18 of
20 games for the Crimson Hawks and helped guide an
IUP offense that finished with league bests in
points (179) and goals (67).
In his first year as head coach of the Warriors,
Berkowitz led ESU to the PSAC semifinals for the
first time in nine years and posted an overall
record of 12-7-1, 8-3-1 in the league, after being
picked by the coaches to finish fifth in the
preseason poll. Last year, ESU posted a 7-11-2
overall record, 3-9-0 in the PSAC East.
Kagiavas earns his third Coach of the Year honors
after leading Edinboro to a 13-5-3 overall record,
6-2-2 in the PSAC West, and set a new school record
for wins in a season. This year's edition
finished as the No. 2 seed in the conference
tournament and hosted its first-ever PSAC playoff
game. The 2007 Fighting Scots advanced to the
semifinals, marking the best finish for an Edinboro
squad to date. Kagiavas has been the Fighting
Scots head coach since 1996, compiling a 103-100-18
record, and recording five seasons with 10 or more
wins.
