(November 28, 2007)
Slippery Rock University's Pat Reagan and Edinboro
University's Rachael Lanzel have been selected by
the league coaches as the 2007 Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference Athletes of the Year in the
sport of cross country.
Edinboro's Barry McLaughlin was named Rookie of the
Year while Shippensburg's Abby Huber earned the
honor for the women.
The men's Coach of the Year award honored Edinboro's
Doug Watts while Bloomsburg's Karen Brandt was named
the women's Coach of the Year.
Reagan, a junior from Masontown (Albert Gallatin
HS), paced a Slippery Rock squad that returned to
the NCAA Championship as a team for the first time
since 1991. Reagan was The Rock's top
competitor at the national event, finishing 12th on
the 10,000 meter course in a time of 30:37. He
finished second behind a teammate at the East
Regional while earning a seventh place finish at the
PSAC Championship.
Lanzel, a senior from St. Marys (St. Marys HS) earned
her second consecutive Athlete of the Year award and
concluded her career as one of the best runners in
Edinboro history, finishing as a four-time All-PSAC
selection and a three-time All-American, just the fourth
female to do so as a Fighting Scot. Lanzel
was also named the 2007 East Region Athlete of the Year
by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches
Association (USTFCCCA). Lanzel finished 17th at
the NCAA Championships after helping her squad to a
second place finish at the East Regional where she took
home the individual title. Earlier in the year,
she finished second in the PSAC Championships. For
her career, Lanzel has finished first or second in both
the league and regional championships for the past two
years while finishing in the top eight places each of
her four years.
Huber, (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley), was the top
freshman finisher at the East Regional with her 12th
place showing. Her time at the race was nearly a
full minute faster than her previous best. The
rookie was the top Lady Raider finisher in all seven of
the races she competed in, including a seventh-place
showing at the PSAC Championships.
McLaughlin, a freshman from Sharpsville (West Middlesex
HS), was a consistent performer for the Fighting Scots
in his rookie campaign. He finished 10th at the
PSAC Championship, then followed with a ninth place
finish at the East Regional. His consistency
helped Edinboro to four first place finishes, including
its first league championship since 2002 that snapped a
string of four straight by Lock Haven.
A
fixture at Edinboro since 1969, Watts has produced
numerous PSAC team and individual title winners.
This year's edition gathered its first conference crown
since 2002, when the Fighting Scots won their last of 11
straight crowns and 18th in the past 19 years.
Edinboro also placed first at the East Regional and went
on to finish 14th at the NCAA Championships.
The honors for Brandt are her first in nine seasons at
Bloomsburg. She led her squad to its first PSAC
conference crown along with its first ever East Regional
title. The Huskies went on to finish 15th out of
24 teams at the NCAA Championships. Brandt was
also named the East Region Coach of the Year by the
USTFCCCA.
