California, Millersville Picked First in Preseason Coaches' Poll
(November 13, 2007)

Men’s Basketball Coaches in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference have chosen California and Millersville as the respective favorites in the Western and Eastern Divisions for 2007-08.  Both schools won divisional titles a year ago.

Following California in the West is Edinboro, and then Clarion, Shippensburg, IUP, Lock Haven and Slippery Rock.

In the East, the coaches see Kutztown as Millersville's top competition.  The Golden Bears are followed in order by Cheyney, E. Stroudsburg, Bloomsburg, Mansfield and West Chester.

Following is a brief preview of each team:

Eastern Division
MILLERSVILLE (28-5, 9-3 East)

Millersville lost only one starter from last year’s league championship squad, albeit a key one.  If the Marauder can replace the efforts of three-year All-PSAC East First Team guard Greg Testa, they should vie for another title.  Leading the way will be Eastern Division Player of the Year, guard Charlie Parker (16.4 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 147 ast, 104 stl) and swingman Reggie Bates (12.8 ppg).

KUTZTOWN (17-11, 6-6 East)
The only thing lacking from Kutztown’s squad in 2006-07 was a great deal of experience.  That should not be the case this year, as the top six scorers from a year ago are back in the fold.  Guard Dave Ben led the East in scoring last year (18.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg), while Stephen Dennis (15.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 90 ast) solidifies the backcourt coming off his Rookie of the Year honors.  Forward Sean McKeon (14.8 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 117 blk) carried PSAC ranks of 12th in scoring and sixth in rebounding while leading the nation in blocked shots.

CHEYNEY (15-15, 6-6 East)
A tough early season schedule led to a 2-5 start, but Cheyney peaked at the end of the year and finished as PSAC runners up.  Five of the Wolves top six scorers return, including guard Ed Braswell (15.8 ppg, 67 ast) and forward Dawud Morris (11.7 ppg, 6.7 rpg).  Forward Dominique Curry (9.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 40 blk) and center Robert Simpson (10.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 40 blk) are key threats on both ends of the floor, as well.

EAST STROUDSBURG (18-10, 6-6 East)

East Stroudsburg is hoping to earn a playoff spot for the third straight season, something that has not been accomplished at the school since the early 1990s.  The team features a strong inside presence with the return of Channon Easley (12.8 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 57 blk) and Josh Wentz (9.9 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 51 ast).  Andy Heimbach (43 3-pt) is the top outside shooter for a squad that won six of its final 10 games before losing a tight 63-59 contest to Millersville in the PSAC Quarterfinals.

BLOOMSBURG (13-14, 5-7 East)
Guard Nick Jones hopes to carry over some momentum of the last six games of 2006-07 when he averaged 19.3 ppg and helped Bloomsburg win four of those contests.  He will get some help from backcourt mate Drew Jerry, who averaged 6.0 points and led the team with 84 assists.  Bloomsburg, which finished just a game out of making the PSAC playoffs, lost three league games in overtime.

MANSFIELD (9-18, 5-7 East)
A pair of overtime losses in the final two games kept Mansfield from earning a fifth straight playoff berth, but a more experience group returns for 2007-08.  Guards John Hampton (14.6 ppg), Kevin Hill (14.1 ppg) and Chris Greene (9.7 ppg, 132 ast) will key the Mountaineers upbeat attack, and will look for an inside presence from Brandon Lawley (8.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg).  After graduating only one senior last year, this year’s group features four returning starters, three of whom enter their final year.

WEST CHESTER (13-14, 5-7 East)
The Golden Rams struggled in the final month of the 2006-07 campaign, dropping seven of their last eight games.  To improve on that showing, newcomers will have to play a big role this year, aiding the efforts of veteran forward Lenwood Greenwood (11.6 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 66 ast) and guard Kenneth St. George (10.3 ppg, 35 3-pt).  Forward/center Ralph Hegamin, a transfer from Wofford, headlines a class of 11 new players.

Western Division
CALIFORNIA (24-7, 10-2 West)
Last year California won at least a share of the top spot in the West for the seventh time in 11 seasons under head coach Bill Brown.  To repeat that achievement this year, the Vulcans will need to replace their top three scorers from the 2006-07 season.  Seniors James Hairston (8.5 ppg. 73 ast, 53 stl), Theron Colao (8.3 ppg, 44 3-pt) and Ron Banks (7.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg) look to boost their scoring production and get some help from incoming guards Jesse Brooks and Julian Logan.

EDINBORO (19-10, 8-4 West)
Edinboro has qualified for the PSAC playoffs seven straight seasons, finishing first or second in the West in each of those years.  The Fighting Scots lost their top two scorers from 2006-07, but return three starters in guards Joseph Jones (12.5 ppg, 46 3-pt, 122 ast, 49 stl) and Devon Knight (10.4 ppg, 49 stl), and forward Ryan McLemore (6.4 ppg, 9.2 rpg, 91 blk).  A pair of newcomers at forward – Gerald Warrick and James Wallace – are expected to aid McLemore in the paint.

CLARION (13-15, 6-6 West)
Clarion overcame a 10-game mid-season losing streak to win eight of its final 10 games and make the PSAC playoffs for the 10th time in 11 years.  Among the three returning starters is forward Rickey Henderson (16.1 ppg, 9.4 rpg in 2005-06), who averaged 10.0 ppg and 10.2 rpg before a broken hand ended his season just five games into the 2006-07 campaign.  Henderson will pair with center Josh Yanke (10.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg) to form a strong frontcourt, while Demetrius Graham (4.1 ppg, 84 ast, 40 stl) directs the action at the guard position.

SHIPPENSBURG (17-11, 8-4 West)
Shippensburg lost eight seniors and four starters from last year’s squad, including three-time All-PSAC West First Team choice Chuck Davis (17.6 ppg, 5.3 ppg, 61 ast, 72 stl), the school’s all-time leading scorer.  This year’s team will need production from guards Alex Jones (7.8 ppg, 49 3-pt, 81 ast, 41) and Ryan Kraft (West Rookie of the Year in 2004-05) to battle for playoff contention in 2007-08.  Tariek Belcher and Daziah Miller, a pair of forwards who transferred in this season, will be looked upon to control the paint.

IUP (6-21, 3-9 West)
An inexperienced IUP team mustered just six wins a year ago, but found a standout performer in forward Gerald Brooks, the PSAC-West Rookie of the Year.  Brooks (12.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg) ranked fourth in the West in rebounding, ninth in scoring and fourth in FG pct (54.8).  Guard Jordan Shaw is IUP’s only other returning starter, good for 8.9 ppg and 45 3-pointers a season ago.  Talented guards Sean Christiansen and Thomas Young are Division I transfers who hope to fit into the Crimson Hawks system.

LOCK HAVEN (12-15, 5-7 West)
Lock Haven came within one win of making the PSAC playoffs, with much of the credit going to Western Division Player of the Year Billy Arre.  The 6-5 forward led the league with 21.8 ppg, and led his squad with 6.8 rpg and 46 3-point FG.  Seven newcomers will join Arre, guard Justin Wilson (10.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 34 stl) and forward Denny Mortimer (8.9 ppg, 4.8 rpg) as Lock Haven tries to contend for the postseason this year.

SLIPPERY ROCK (5-22, 2-10 West)
Slippery Rock looks to gain some continuity with four returning starters who have been with the program the past two seasons.  Headlining the list is guard Jamar Scales (12.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 64 ast, 52 stl), who will be aided in the backcourt by Erroll Robinson (7.3 ppg, 62 ast) and Matt Schaefer (5.7 ppg, 86 ast).  Forward Joseph Vines (7.9 ppg) will spearhead the inside play along with some talented newcomers.
