- 2007 All-PSAC Field Hockey Teams
- (October 30, 2007)
The field hockey coaches from the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference have named Bloomsburg's Jamie
Vanartsdalen as their sport's 2007 Athlete of the
Year. The group also honored Bloomsburg's
Brieann Wolfe as the Rookie of the Year and
Kutztown's Betty Wesner as the Coach of the Year.
Vanartsdalen, a junior forward from Huntingdon
Valley (Lower Moreland HS), leads Division II in
points (3.68), goals (1.45) and assists (0.77) per
game, having scored 32 goals and 17 assists for 81
points on the year. Her point total is
now the best in school history for a season, passing
the previous mark of 63, and is an NCAA
single-season best. Vanartsdalen
leads the NCAA in all divisions in points and also
became the school's career point's leader with 188
points scored. Vanartsdalen is a two-time
All-America and All-PSAC First Team selection who
owns PSAC single-season records in points and goals
while tying for first in assists.
A freshman from Perkasie (Pennridge HS), Wolfe made
an immediate impact on the reigning Division II
national championship squad. She played in all
22 games for the Huskies and finished third in goals
(16) with two game-winners. Utilized primarily
as a substitute, Wolfe added to an already explosive
Bloomsburg attack that featured Vanartsdalen and
Ashley Heckard, the nation's top scoring duo and the
nation's top-ranked scoring team (5.36 goals per
game).
In her 28th year as head coach, Wesner led Kutztown
to a 17-4 overall, 11-3 in the PSAC. She has
compiled a career record of 292-217-15, posting
winning seasons in 19 of those 28 years, and earning
Coach of the Year Honors three times (1997, 1988).
This
year's
squad made its first appearance in the PSAC playoffs
since 2005 before falling to Bloomsburg in the
semifinals.
Earlier in the year, the Golden Bears made history
as they became Kutztown's first women's squad to be
ranked No. 1 when they picked up top honors from the
National Field Hockey Coaches Association
and will
get a chance to make history again as the Golden
Bears were selected for the NCAA Division II
National Championship Tournament for the first time
since 1997. Wesner's squad will face
Bloomsburg in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 3
at 7 p.m.
