PSAC Football Preview - Week 8
(October 17, 2007)

All 13 teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference are in action this week. 

The Eastern Division is featured in this week's SPORTSfever Television Network's "APSCUF Game of the Week."  Millersville travels to Bloomsburg for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.  The game will be aired live in the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton markets but will air on taped-delay in all other areas.

The match up is the seventh of 10 PSAC contests
to be broadcast state-wide on SPORTSfever Television Network and will be available through a network of Pennsylvania commercial television stations with a potential audience of 4.8 million cable, satellite and over-the-air households.   

Other Eastern Divison match ups include Cheyney at Kutztown (1:05 p.m.) and East Stroudsburg at West Chester (6 p.m.).  In the Western Division, California hosts Edinboro at 3 p.m. while IUP travels to Lock Haven for a 2 p.m. start.  Slippery Rock travels to Shippensburg (1 p.m.) for the remaining West match up.  Clarion plays a non-league contest on the road at Fairmont St (6 p.m.)

On the national scene, three PSAC teams are ranked in the top 25 of  the AFCA  poll. while two league teams rank in the D2football.com poll.  In the second NCAA Northeast Region rankings, the PSAC still boasts four of the top five positions and five teams ranked overall.

Series:
Bloomsburg holds a record of 34-30-05 against Millersville and has won the last seven contests, including last year's 28-16 decision.  The Marauders last won against the Huskies in 1999 by a score 31-21.

K John Banzhof - Team's leading scorer with 21 points (4-of-6 field goals, 9-of-11 PAT attempts)
Current Trends:
Millersville has scored twice as many points in its last three games than all of its first four games combined.  The defense has allowed at least one rushing touchdown in all but one game.  Offensively, the Marauders special teams have returned two punts and a kickoff for touchdowns.
Bloomsburg
Overall: 3-3

Players to Watch:
RB Jamar Brittingham - 1st in league in scoring (15.7 ppg); second in rushing (118.0 ypg) and second in all-purpose yards (167.3 ypg)
WR Brahin Bilal - 1st in all-purpose yards (178.5); second in both receptions per game (5.67) and receiving yards per game (115.2)
Current Trends:
Bloomsburg has outscored opponents 65-40 in the second quarter.  The Huskies have scored 25 times in 27 chances inside the red zone, a PSAC-best 92.6 percent.  The red zone defense is equally impressive as it ranks second in the league, allowing opponents to score only 65.5 percent of the time (19-of-29).

 

 

 

 

 

Edinboro at California - 3 p.m.

Series: 
Edinboro looks to knot the series at 36 wins as California holds a slight 36-35-2 series advantage.  Edinboro has lost the last two contests, including last year's 10-0 defeat at home.

Current Trends:
Last week marked the first time since the opening game of the season that quarterback Trevor Harris did not throw for more than three touchdowns in a game, a span of five games.  Defensively, the 27 points allowed against IUP marked the highest point total against the Fighting Scots by a Western Division team since giving up 30 points to Shippensburg in a 54-30 win last season.  Prior to that, California defeated Edinboro 36-26 in 2005.

Current Trends:
California's 27 points against Lock Haven were the second-lowest this year behind the Vulcans 26-3 win over E. Stroudsburg in the season-opener.  California is outscoring opponents 76-6 in the second quarter.  California ranks third in the league in time of possession, controlling the ball an average of 31:20 in comparison to Edinboro, which ranks last in the PSAC with E. Stroudsburg in TOP at 28:00. 

 

 

 


 

Cheyney at Kutztown - 1:05 p.m.

Series:
This is the 58th meeting between the squads, with Kutztown holding a 46-10-1 record against Cheyney.  The Wolves last victory over the Golden Bears came in 1993 by a 30-19 count.

Current Trends:
 For the first time this season a Cheyney running back posted over 100 yards rushing (Billy Mitchell, 21-for-102 yds).  The Wolves continue to protect the ball, tying a season-low for turnovers (2) against E. Stroudsburg.
Kutztown

Current Trends:
Kutztown's 21-0 setback at West Chester marked the first time since 0ct. 12, 2005 that the Golden Bears were shut out (12-0 loss at Bloomsburg).  Leading wide receiver Elfren Quiles left the West Chester game with an injury and three Golden Bears stepped up to have career days.  Quiles has double the receptions and nearly four times the yardage as the next Kutztown receiver (48-for-957 yds).

 

 



Clarion at Fairmont St. - 6 p.m.


Series:
Clarion owns a 9-3 record against Fairmont St.  The two teams last met in 1995 with Clarion winning, 48-13.

Current Trends:
Clarion has played as many as 30 freshmen in its first seven games.  The Golden Eagles are averaging 289.4 yards total offense but have seen improvement in the passing game in the last two contests.  Clarion is ranked 8th in the league with 197.0 passing yards per game but threw for 258 yards against Shippensburg and 303 yards against Slippery Rock, a squad that ranked fourth against the pass heading into last week's contest, allowing 187.3 ypg.
Fairmont St.

Current Trends:
Fairmont State’s defense is giving up 330.9 yards per game (126.7 rushing; 204.1 passing).  Meanwhile, its offense is averaging 251.7 yards per game and have used four different quarterbacks this season.  The unit has scored more than 10 points just twice this season (21-10 loss to Shepherd; 31-21 setback to Glenville St.).

 

 



East Stroudsburg at West Chester - 6 p.m.

Series:
West Chester owns a 51-20 record against East Stroudsburg.  This game marks the 61st consecutive contest between the squads and is East Stroudsburg longest current series at 80 years.

Current Trends:
The East Stroudsburg defense has held three teams to less than 250 yards total offense this season.  The Warriors offense ran for 337 yards against Cheyney, marking the second time that ESU has ran for more than 100 yards in a game, and will face a tough run defense in West Chester, who gives up just 137.7 ypg.
West Chester
Overall: 6-1

Current Trends:
West Chester's 21-0 blanking of Kutztown was its first shut out since defeating Mansfield last season, 44-0.  The Golden Rams also shut out Shippensburg last year, 24-0.  Two of the league's top 10 tacklers are West Chester linebackers (Lateef Ferguson, 1st - 10.3 tpg / Mike Dell, 9th - 8.8 tpg).



IUP at Lock Haven - 2 p.m.

Series:
IUP holds a 50-15-3 series advantage, including last year's 23-14 victory.  The last Lock Haven victory came in 1981 by a 41-14 count.

Freshman quarterback Tyler Golden made his first start for the Bald Eagles and is listed as the starter for this week.   LHU's offense averages just 9.6 points per game and will face a touch challenge in the league's second-best defense in IUP (284.8 total ypg).

 


 

Slippery Rock at Shippensburg - 1 p.m.

Series:
Slippery Rock has a record of 38-20-2 against Shippensburg.  The teams have been equally matched in recent years, with Shippensburg taking four of the last seven contests, including last year's 28-21 decision at Slippery Rock.

Current Trends:
Slippery Rock boasts the league's top-ranked rushing unit at 273.3 yards per game and owns three of the top 10 rushers in the PSAC (Corey Manfull, 1st  -144.6 ypg; Ryan Lehmeier, 6th - 81.6; Damarcus Cleckley, 9th - 65.9).  The Rock will face a Shippensburg squad that ranks fourth in rushing defense at 129.4 yards per game.

Current Trends:
Shippensburg has put together back-to-back wins after starting the season 0-5.  The rushing game has come alive for the Red Raiders, averaging 241.0 yards per game in their last two contests after failing to reach 100 rushing yards in four of its first five games.  The defense will have its hands full with Slippery Rock and its top-rated offense (468.4 ypg), however, the Red Raiders are giving up only 317.4 total yards per game.
