Lock Haven Wins 2006-2007 Dixon Trophy
The School's Third All-Sports Trophy in Seven Years
(May 15, 2007)

Lock Haven University is the winner of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s Dixon Trophy for the 2006-07 academic year.  The trophy is given on an annual basis to the league’s most successful all-around program.

The Dixon Trophy is named after F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.  It is awarded annually to the PSAC member institution that accumulates the most points based on results of conference playoffs and/or regular-season records.  Each institution's point total is calculated by adding its top six men's finishes and top six women's finishes in 21 conference sports.

Lock Haven University representatives are on hand to accept the Dixon Trophy for the 2006-07 season.  The trophy was presented Tuesday, May 15, during an awards luncheon at the Dixon Center in Harrisburg.  From L-R: Assistant Track & Field Coach Chad Warren, Field Coach Heather Leverington, President Dr. Keith Miller, Director of Athletics Sharon Taylor, Assistant Athletics Director Danielle Barney and Track Coach Aaron Russell.

This year marked the third time in the 12-year existence of the award that Lock Haven triumphed over the rest of the league.  The program won back-to-back titles in 2000-01 and 2001-02, as well.

In winning this year's title, Lock Haven captured five league championships and three runner-up finishes.  LHU totaled 143.5 points, outdistancing second-place West Chester by eight points to deny the Golden Rams their first-ever trophy.

West Chester also captured five league titles as they finished with 135.5 points.  Slippery Rock (132.5) finished in third behind solid efforts from its track & field programs.  Shippensburg (130) and Kutztown (127) rounded out the top five, respectively.

Lock Haven and West Chester were deadlocked on the men's side with 69.5 points each, but LHU took advantage of a strong spring performance by the women's side to pull ahead.  A softball championship was aided by a runner-up in lacrosse and a third-place showing in outdoor track & field.  Other significant efforts on the women's side included a volleyball championship and a runner-up in indoor track & field.  The Lady Eagles finished with 74 points, the most of any women's programs in the PSAC.

The Lock Haven men claimed titles in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field.  They also benefited from a runner-up finish in men's soccer and a third-place showing in wrestling.

Slippery Rock finished third as the women's track program collected titles in both indoor and outdoor track & field while the men's program did not finish lower than third in either championship.  The Rock also qualified for PSAC playoffs in men's and women's soccer, volleyball, women's tennis and baseball.

Though Shippensburg won just one league title - in baseball - it finished as runners-up in both indoor and outdoor track & field and field hockey.

Kutztown earned a men's tennis title and benefited from a solid spring to finish fifth.  Both softball and outdoor track & field recorded second-place showings while baseball qualified for the PSAC playoffs.

With its three titles, Lock Haven joins Shippensburg, which owns a league-best five trophies, as the only two schools to win three or more times.
