Bloomsburg 24, California 19
BLOOMSBURG— Marcus Waddy's (Philadelphia/Frankford)
five-yard return of a muffed punt in the fourth
period proved to be the turning point in Bloomsburg
University's 24-19 win over California (PA)
University on Saturday in a battle of nationally
ranked teams.
With the Vulcans (1-1) at their own 22-yard and in
punt formation, the snap to punter Jace Amore was
high. While trying to recover, the Huskies' (1-1)
Jesse Cooper (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) knocked
the ball loose with Waddy recovering and running in
for a score to put Bloomsburg in front, 17-13 with
8:31 to play in the game.
Later in the period, Bloomsburg added to its lead
with the aid of a fumbled punt return deep in
Huskies' territory. The Vulcan's Marc Huddleston
dropped a punt at the Bloomsburg 15-yard with Brahin
Bilal (Philadelphia/Lincoln) recovering. Two plays
later, quarterback Dan Latorre (Elysburg/Southern
Columbia) hit Bilal in the corner of the endzone
with a nine-yard scoring pass to make it 24-13 with
4:03 to play.
California came back quickly and cut the lead to
24-19 when Huddleston caught a 22-yard scoring pass
from Joe Ruggiero with 3:15 left with the two-point
conversion failing.
Bloomsburg, however, picked up two downs to run out
the clock to earn the victory.
The only scoring in the opening half of the game
came from the foot of Bloomsburg's Jon Koening (Pine
Grove/Pine Grove) who connected on a 23-yard field
goal attempt with 4:55 left in the second period.
Cal missed on a 26-yard attempt just before
halftime.
In the third period, Cal went in front 13-3 with a
pair of touchdown runs from Brandon Lombardy. The
first was a 15-yard run with the second scoring from
20-yards out.
Bloomsburg scored its first touchdown of the season
in the fourth period when Jamar Brittingham
(Levittown/Neshaminy) capped an eight-play, 80-yard
drive with a five-yard run with 11:34 left in the
game to make the score 13-10.
Brittingham, last year's PSAC Eastern Division
Player of the Year, finished with 24 carries for 106
yards and a score in his first action of the season.
Bilal led the receivers with four catches for 55
yards and a touchdown and also made three tackles on
special teams. Rob Biernat (Bristol/Conwell Egan)
led the defense with eight tackles.
Cal was led by Lombardy with 105 yards rushing and
two scores, while Huddleston had seven catches for
69 yards and a score.
Bloomsburg visits Edinboro next week while
California travels to Cheyney.
East Stroudsburg 45, Lock Haven 14
EAST STROUDSBURG – Wide receiver Evan Prall scored
five times and the East Stroudsburg University
football team beat Lock Haven, 45-14, Saturday at
Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Prall caught nine passes for 254 yards and four
touchdowns and also returned a punt for a score as
the Warriors improved to 1-1.
The victory was the 200th of coach Denny’s Douds
career. Douds is the second coach in Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference history with 200 victories
and the ninth coach in Division II to reach the
milestone.
Following the game, Douds was presented with the
game ball from offensive coordinator Mike
Terwilliger and a plaque from ESU President Dr.
Robert J. Dillman and ESU Athletic Director Dr. Tom
Gioglio.
Prall set an ESU single-game record with his 254
yards, eclipsing the total of 236 of Brett Witmer in
1996. It is also the fourth-best mark in PSAC
history.
Prall’s five touchdowns tied the ESU single-game
record held by Danny Roskos. Roskos set the record
in 1946 against Montclair State.
Quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger completed 17 of 26
passes for 343 yards and five touchdowns. It was the
23rd time he has thrown for more than 300 yards and
the 39th consecutive game he has thrown a touchdown
pass. Both of those marks are NCAA records. It is
also the fifth time in his career he has thrown for
five touchdowns.
ESU limited Lock Haven to 115 yards rushing and 114
yards passing. Linebacker Jayson Frank made eight
tackles while Dave Lotier added seven. Defensive
linemen Miguel Rivera and John Vetter each had six
tackles.
Lock Haven opened the game with an onside kick and
the marched 50 yards for a score. Adam Lawrence
rushed for a nine-yard score at the 9:50 mark.
The Warriors tied the game on their first possession
when Terwilliger hit Prall for a three-yard score,
capping a nine-play, 51-yard drive. Prall caught a
43-yard pass on the second plan and Terwilliger
later connected with Doug Ogden for 11 yards. Eric
Petters kicked the PAT to tie the game.
ESU went ahead to stay in the second quarter with a
12-play, 71-yard drive. Terwilliger hit Ogden for
six yards, found Sam Shuman for 16 and then
connected with Prall for an 18-yard score with 3:08
left in the first half.
Prall caught his third touchdown to end the first
half. Terwilliger scrambled for 12 yards to open the
drive and then found Prall for 41 yards to get the
ball to the six. Following a timeout by each team,
Terwilliger threw the ball up into the corner of the
end zone and Prall pulled it away from two defenders
for the touchdown and a 21-7 lead at intermission.
Terwilliger hooked up with Joe Partridge for a
29-yard score early in the third quarter. It was
Partridge’s second career touchdown and gave ESU a
28-7 lead.
Lock Haven punted on its next possession. Prall
fielded the ball at the 31, dropped it and picked it
up then ran up the home sidelines for a 69-yard
touchdown. It was the first ESU punt return for a
touchdown since 2003 when Derek Lucas returned one
against Lenoir-Rhyne.
Prall concluded his afternoon with an 81-yard
touchdown reception with 10:18 left in the game when
he outran the Lock Haven secondary.
Lock Haven added its final touchdown with less than
two minutes to play when Ilio DiPaolo hit Chris
Hawkins for an eight-yard touchdown.
ESU is now 1-1 and will play at IUP Saturday at 6
p.m. Lock Haven is 0-2 and will host Millersville at
7 p.m.
Edinboro 54, St. Anselm 0
EDINBORO,
PA – Ulysee “Spud” Davis (Bryans Road, MD/Bishop
McNamara) scored four touchdowns to lead the
Edinboro University football team to a 54-0 win over
visiting St. Anselm in the home opener for the
Fighting Scots. It marked the first meeting between
the two schools and the first time the Fighting
Scots have won their first two games since the 2002
season.
The loss is the eleventh straight for St. Anselm,
dating back to last season. The Hawks, members of
the Northeast-10 Conference, are now 0-2.
Edinboro scored two touchdowns in every quarter
while rolling to the win. The Fighting Scots
finished with 438 yards in total offense while
limiting St. Anselm to 85 total yards. Showcasing a
balanced attack, the Fighting Scots finished with
228 yards on the ground and 210 yards through the
air. The Hawks managed just 30 yards rushing
against an Edinboro defense which held West Chester
to 49 yards last week. Edinboro led Division II in
rushing defense a year ago, along with scoring
defense and total defense.
Edinboro’s first possession of the game resulted in
a punt, but the Fighting Scots proceeded to score on
their next four possessions. Davis, a sophomore
tailback, scored the first three touchdowns of the
game for Edinboro. The first came on a 24-yard run
to cap a short two play drive after a shanked punt
by St. Anselm gave the Boro the ball at the Hawks
24. Kody Robertson’s (Columbus, OH/Hilliard
Davidson) extra point was no good.
An interception by Houston Brown (Westerville,
OH/Westerville), a true freshman making his first
start at cornerback, gave Edinboro the ball back
three plays later. Taking over at the St. Anselm
35, the Fighting Scots needed six plays to reach
paydirt, with Davis scoring on a 14-yard run at the
4:01 mark. Robertson’s PAT was true, giving
Edinboro a 14-0 lead.
Edinboro put together a pair of 65 yard drives in
the second quarter to go up 27-0 at the half. The
first came following a St. Anselm punt, and took
nine plays, with Davis scoring on a four-yard run
with 12:06 left in the second quarter.
Following a St. Anselm punt, the Fighting Scots
needed just six plays to cover 65 yards, with the
Trevor Harris (Waldo, OH/Marion Pleasant) to Kyle
Witucki (Tarentum, PA/Highlands) combination doing
most of the damage. Harris, a redshirt freshman,
completed three passes for 64 yards to Witucki in
the drive, the final one for a 28-yard touchdown.
With Robertson’s extra point, Edinboro led 27-0 with
7:03 to play.
Edinboro boosted the margin to 33-0 after its first
possession of the third quarter as Davis scored his
fourth touchdown, one shy of the school record held
by Elbert Cole. This one came from 19 yards out to
cap a five-play, 53-yard march. Robertson’s kick
was wide left, leaving the lead at 33-0 with 11:41
left.
The Fighting Scots put together their longest drive
of the afternoon late in the period, going 75 yards
on 12 plays. Backup tailback Chaz Cobbs
(Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills) did most of the damage,
carrying eight times for 47 yards. The sophomore
scored his first career touchdown on a seven-yard
run with 1:05 left in the third quarter, with
Robertson’s extra point giving Edinboro a 40-0 lead.
Edinboro tacked on two more scores in the fourth
quarter. The first came after an Edinboro punt hit
a St. Anselm player, with Rodney Stevenson (Bedford,
OH/Warrensville Heights) recovering at the six.
After a loss of two yards, Jay Van Leer (Cleveland,
OH/Cleveland Heights) scored his first career
touchdown on an eight-yard run with 11:34 to play.
Rich Cerro (Franklin, PA/Franklin) set up the next
score when he returned a St. Anselm punt 20 yards to
the Edinboro 46. In a pair of first, Joe Wanson (DuBois,
PA/DuBois) threw his first career touchdown pass to
Deonte Peters (Cleveland Heights, OH/Cleveland
Heights), who took a short pass and made several
impressive moves to complete a 22-yard scoring
play. It was Peters’ first career touchdown
reception.
Davis paced the Edinboro ground game with 141 yards
on 18 carries, his fourth career 100-yard game. In
addition, he caught 3 passes for 39 yards. After
rushing for 120 yards in the season opener at West
Chester, Cobbs finished with 68 yards on 13
carries. Harris was impressive once again at
quarterback, completing 13 of 25 passes for 170
yards with a touchdown and an interception. Witucki
hauled in 5 passes for 80 yards.
Ryan Drago paced St. Anselm’s ground attack with 11
carries for 24 yards. Geoff Stevens completed 8 of
18 passes for 55 yards.
Edinboro is back at Sox Harrison Stadium next
Saturday, September 16, hosting nationally-ranked
Bloomsburg. The Huskies are the preseason favorites
in the PSAC East and entered the week ranked 13th in
the AFCA Division II Top 25.
IUP 33, Cheyney 6
The Lou Tepper era began on a successful note
Saturday as IUP defeated host Cheyney, 33-6, at
O'Shields-Stevenson Stadium.
IUP spotted Cheyney (0-2) a touchdown on the first
drive of the game before holding the Wolves to 89
yards of total offense the rest of the way.
Chris Morgan and Kareem Dutrieuille spearheaded a
233-yard IUP ground attack. Morgan rushed 17 times
for 136 yards and Dutrieuille gained 91 yards on 20
attempts with both finding the end zone twice.
Dutrieuille was making his first appearance in an
IUP uniform since the 2003 season. He nearly
matched his career rushing total after gaining 104
yards during his lone previous campaign on the
active roster.
Morgan upped his career rushing total to 2,635 as he
moved into fourth place on the all-time IUP chart,
eclipsing James Suber, who gained 2,565 yards from
1995-96. Morgan needs only 28 yards to pass Dennis
Robinson (1994-95) for third.
Morgan's two touchdowns gives him 22 in his career,
good for 10th in school history, and he inched into
sixth in career rushing attempts with 505.
Kevin Weidl returned to the IUP lineup after sitting
out the 2005 season and completed 14 of 25 passes
for 167 yards.
IUP held Cheyney to 26 rushing yards while Derrick
Murry was 14 of 30 for 115 yards.
The game was the first for IUP against Cheyney since
1995 and the first ever at O'Shields-Stevenson
Stadium. IUP snapped a four-game losing streak
against PSAC East opponents.
Cheyney got off to a quick start, taking the opening
kickoff and marching 78 yards on 12 plays, capped by
a one-yard scoring run by Jameel Felder. The extra
point was blocked.
IUP responded with a 10-play, 79-yard drive, with
Morgan gaining 51 of the yards on the ground. His
one-yard scamper into the end zone gave IUP a 7-6
lead with 3:59 left in the first quarter.
Cheyney reached the IUP 11 early in the second
quarter but Billy Mitchell fumbled the ball away.
Mitchell also lost a fumble at the Cheyney 43, and
IUP capitalized when Dutrieuille set up his own
touchdown with runs of 11 and 13 yards, leaving the
visitors in front, 13-6, at halftime.
Touchdown runs of seven yards by Weidl and 22 by
Morgan in the third quarter opened up the IUP lead
to 26-6, and a six-yard run by Dutrieuille with 7:57
remaining in the game rounded out the IUP scoring.
IUP plays its home opener next Saturday when East
Stroudsburg brings reigning Harlon Hill trophy
winner Jimmy Terwilliger to Miller Stadium for a 6
p.m. kickoff. Cheyney travels to California.
Slippery Rock 27, Millersville 22
Millersville, PA – Millersville University held a
17-14 lead at halftime, but it would not be enough
as Slippery Rock upended the Marauders, 27-22, in
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference football
crossover action on Saturday afternoon at Chryst
Field in Biemsderfer Stadium.
Slippery Rock, which now improves to 1-1 overall, is
now 12-4-1 all-time against the Marauders, who fall
to 0-2 overall on the season. Millersville has not
lost back-to-back games to open the season since
2002.
The Rock opened the scoring when Luke Wetzel, who
made four catches for 138 yards on the day, caught a
14-yard pass from Nate Crookshank just 1:44 into the
contest. Ryan Daniel’s made extra point put
Slippery Rock ahead, 7-0.
Millersville responded on its next drive when
sophomore Andrew Tischbein, who notched a season and
game-high eight catches for 93 yards on the day,
caught a 29-yard launch from senior Dan Csencsitz at
the 11:28 mark in the first quarter. Junior Doug
Ruhl’s extra point attempt was good to tie the game,
7-7.
Wetzel and Crookshank hooked up for a second time on
a 52-yard pass with 5:52 remaining in the first
quarter to give The Rock a 14-7 lead after the extra
point.
Freshman Jordan Brooks caught the first touchdown of
his collegiate career on a 41-yard pass from
Csencsitz with 1:27 left in the first quarter. Ruhl
tied the game, 14-14, once again on the made extra
point.
The second quarter remained scoreless until Ruhl
kicked a 36-yard field goal to give the Marauders a
17-14 lead with 5:22 left before halftime. Slippery
Rock tried to match Millersville, but Daniel missed
a 39-yard field goal attempt with 2:16 left in the
half.
The only score of the third quarter came at the 7:45
mark when Kyle Witman mishandled the punt in the
end-zone and Millersville was awarded a safety,
putting the Marauders up, 19-14.
The Rock’s Terry Grossetti brought down a 24-yard
pass from Crookshank 3:49 into the fourth quarter to
give Slippery Rock the 20-19 advantage after failing
to complete a two-point conversion.
Slippery Rock recovered its own on-sides kick on the
start of the next drive and Crookshank found Wetzel
for the third time of the day on a 33-yard pass to
give The Rock a 27-19 lead after the extra point at
the 10:56 mark.
Ruhl notched a 37-yard field goal, his second of the
day, to bring the Marauders within five, at 27-22,
with 6:44 left in the game.
Csencsitz completed 19 of 28 passes for 190 yards
and two touchdowns, while Crookshank completed 17 of
25 passes for 221 yards and four touchdowns.
Millersville freshman Brad Lantz ran for a
career-high 83 yards in the loss, averaging 5.9
yards per carry.
Sophomores Shane Gosnell and Ryan Lymych led the
defense with seven tackles apiece for Millersville,
while Cory Lacek led The Rock with seven tackles and
a new school single-game record of four sacks.
Juniors Marcus Banks and Brandon Shelton each added
six tackles on the day for the Marauders.
Millersville is set to travel to take on the Bald
Eagles of Lock Haven University in PSAC crossover
action on Saturday, September 16 for a 7:00 p.m.
game.

night.
Held at Kutztown’s University Field, the Bears
raised their record to 1-0, while Clarion dropped to
0-2.
Late in the second quarter Clarion took the lead
10-6 when Eagle freshman qb Mark Rupert (Knoch)

Delaware 30, West Chester 7
NEWARK, DE – The NCAA I-AA University of
Delaware Fighting Blue Hens jumped out to a 27-0
halftime lead en route to a 30-7 victory over
the Golden Rams of West Chester University
before more than 22,000 fans Saturday night in
Newark, DE.
The loss dropped the Golden Rams to 0-2 on the
season while Delaware moved to 1-0 after
grabbing its season opener.
The Blue Hens benefited from a 42-yard punt
return deep into WCU territory, an interception
that set Delaware up close to the WCU goal, and
multiple long kickoffs that bottled up the WCU
offense. The Blue Hens also connected on three
field goals.
However, the WCU defense was outstanding in the
second half, limiting the University of Delaware
Blue Hens to just three points while scoring
West Chester’s lone touchdown of the game – an
83-yard fumble recovery run by junior DB Maurice
Garlic (Sicklerville, NJ/St. Augustine Prep)
late in the fourth quarter.
The WCU defense limited Delaware to 292 yards of
total offense, recovered four fumbles by the
Blue Hens, and picked off a pass in the end zone
when red-shirt freshman LB Mike Dell
(Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin) made a spectacular
grab off a deflected pass. He defended the play
by causing the Delaware receiver to tip the ball
up in the air then had the presence of mind to
locate the ball and tightrope his feet inbounds
along the end line for the pick.
The Delaware offense, meanwhile, had a slight
edge in total yards (292-250) and first downs
(17-15). Each team ran 63 plays with the Golden
Rams averaging a slightly better 4.2 yards per
rush attempt compared to 4.1 for the Blue Hens.
West Chester completed more passes (11-9) and
limited the Blue Hens to just 110 yards through
the air.
The West Chester defense also conjured up a trio
of sacks, including one by junior ILB Lateef
Ferguson (Philadelphia/Dobbins Tech) who posted
a seven-yarder. He finished the game with eight
hits on four tackles and four assists.
Junior OLB and Delaware native Jimmy Lewis
(Wilmington, DE/Concord) also had eight hits on
four tackles and four assists, while sophomore
OLB T.J. Cascio (St. Davids/Malvern Prep) led
all Golden Ram defenders with 11 hits on five
tackles and six assists.
Dell had an outstanding game for the Golden
Rams. In addition to his interception, he also
recovered a fumble, posted a tackle and an
assist, and was credited with a pass defensed.
Senior DE David Montgomery
(Philadelphia/Northeast) forced a fumble on a
sack (-6 yards) and ended up with six hits on
four tackles and two assists. Senior DE Nicholai
Jablokov (Wyndmoor/Springfield-MONTCO) blasted
into the backfield for an eight-yard sack that
caused a fumble. He had the one tackle to go
along with an assist.
Sophomore kicker Alex Walsh
(Downingtown/Downingtown East) missed the first
field goal of his career on the opening drive,
but he drilled a squib kick off of a Delaware
defender in the fourth quarter that sophomore WR
Darrell Canty (Riverside, NJ/Riverside)
recovered deep in Delaware territory.
Garlic’s fumble recovery and 83-yard touchdown
scamper was the second longest in recorded West
Chester University history. The longest occurred
on September 27, 1997, at the University of
Buffalo when Marcellus Simmons rumbled 90 yards
for a score. Ironically, the two longest
recorded fumble recoveries for touchdowns have
occurred against I-AA opponents.
The Golden Ram offense was led by junior TB
Osagie Osunde (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) who
compiled 159 all-purpose yards, elevating his
career total to 4252 yards. He moved from fifth
place all-time to third on Saturday night,
passing Mike Eckmeyer (4105 from 2000-03) and
Ron Perkins (4210 from 1979-82).
Osunde rushed for 48 yards on 13 carries,
grabbed two receptions for 18 yards, and
returned four kickoffs a total of 93 yards.
Senior WR Eric Ruffenach (Drexel Hill/Upper
Darby) snared three passes for 28 yards.
Sophomore WR Michael Washington
(Philadelphia/Frankford) actually ran the ball
six times for 41 yards in the contest. He caught
one pass for 14. Senior TB Brent Steinmetz
(Pottstown/Pottsgrove) carried the ball eight
times for 40 yards and caught two passes for
seven.
The Golden Rams will visit Clarion on Saturday
night at 6 p.m.
