California senior Amber Santavy recorded 16 kills, led a
stellar defensive effort with a team-high 22 digs and was
named Championship MVP in leading the Vulcans to a 3-0
triumph over Clarion (27-5) in the 2007 PSAC Volleyball
Championship Tournament.
The Vulcans, the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division II
Atlantic Region who had to beat the second and third-ranked
teams in the region (both from the PSAC West) to win the
PSAC crown, downed second-ranked Clarion for the third time
this season by scores of 30-27, 37-35 and 30-20. In Friday’s
semifinal match, Cal topped third-ranked Edinboro, 3-1.
It’s Cal’s second PSAC playoff title in the last three years
and fourth in team history. The Vulcans, who are 32-3
overall and boast a 31-match win streak, improved their
all-time PSAC playoff record to 11-1. Cal’s previous PSAC
championships were in 1991, 1992 and 2005.
During the 31-match win streak, Cal has lost only nine games
and registered 24 shutouts.
Cal earned the PSAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship
Tournament. The Vulcans hope to remain the top seed and earn
the right to host the eight-team regional championship
tournament when the NCAA Tournament bids are announced
Monday (11/12) morning.
Santavy became the seventh player in team history to record
more than 900 career kills in Friday’s win against Edinboro,
added 16 to her career total Saturday and now has 925. She
also had 37 digs in the weekend event, moving up three
places to eighth on Cal’s career digs list with 896.
Sophomores Marta Hodge (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) and
Renata da Silva (Sao Paolo, Brazil/Sao Paolo) were also
strong defensively against Clarion.
Hodge had 20 digs Saturday and became the first player in
team history with more than 600 in a season (613).
da Silva, added 18 digs, three block assists, a service ace
and 52 assists vs. Clarion. She is among Cal’s season
leaders with 1,416 assists (fourth) and 50 service aces
(tied for fourth) this season. da Silva is also 11th in
career service aces with 86.
Also contributing to the attach against the Golden Eagles
were sophomore Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood), senior
Katie Benick (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) and junior
Tamara Hinic (Hamilton, Ont./Barton).
Nist had 18 kills and 10 digs. With 36 kills in the two
tournament matches, Nist moved into eighth place on Cal’s
single-season kills list (454) and 10th place on Cal’s
career kills list (791).
Benick chipped in 11 kills, one solo block and three block
assists while Hinic had nine kills, two service aces, two
digs and four block assists.
