2006 PSAC Women's Lacrosse Championship
(hosted by West Chester University)
WEST CHESTER, PA – For the 18th time in its 20-year history of participating
in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, the West Chester University
women’s lacrosse team has captured the PSAC Championship.
On Saturday afternoon at WCU’s South Campus Multi-Purpose Turf Field, senior
attack player Katelyn Martin raced past the Lock
Haven University defense with nine points on six goals and three assists as
the Golden Rams doubled up the Bald Eagles 16-8.
Martin was named the game's MVP.
Jessica Blickenstaff topped Lock Haven with six points on four goals and two
assists. She scored the game’s first goal to give LHU a 1-0 lead and the
game’s third goal to snap a 1-1 tie.
However, Martin dominated the contest by leading a barrage of four
consecutive goals near the end of the first half to give the Golden Rams a
5-3 intermission advantage. She scored twice during the run, while
Gina DiDomenicis and Christine Kane also tallied scores. Kane, a
junior attack, ended the contest with four goals and three assists.
The Golden Rams scored the first two goals of the second half thanks to
Mandy Masoner and Kane, but Lock Haven then used a 3-1 run to pull within two at
8-6. However, West Chester punched in eight of the game’s final 10 goals to
secure the victory.
Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Marshall halted 10 Lock
Haven shots on net and kept the Bald Eagles to their lowest goal output of
the year.
Martin has now moved into second place all-time on the NCAA Division II
career scoring list after jumping her total to 358 points vs. the Bald
Eagles. She now needs just
two points to break the mark of 359 currently held by Deb Wood of
Gannon University.
Martin has posted 112 points this season, upping her total to the third most
in school history. The record of 131 is held by Kathleen Sheehan (2004),
while Erika Baker is second with 128 (1993). She also has 84 goals which
ranks second all-time in a season behind Sheehan who set the record of 93 in
2004.
The victory marked the third straight PSAC Championship for the Golden Rams
and fifth in the last six seasons. West Chester, which joined the PSAC in
1983 in the sport of women’s lacrosse, has now won the title every year it
has been in the league with the exception of 2000 and 2003. The Golden Rams
did not participate in the conference from 1988-91.
