2005 PSAC Women's Lacrosse Championship
(hosted by West Chester University)
WEST CHESTER, PA – Katelyn Martin (Downingtown/Downingtown) set the career
goal scoring record, Ginny Martino became the first 100-win coach and Kirstin McGoldrick (Havertown/Haverford) broke the 50-assist plateau as the
West Chester University women’s lacrosse team downed Bloomsburg 16-5 to
capture the 2005 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship.
The rainy Saturday in West Chester could not stop the Golden Rams from
claiming its 17th PSAC title in 19 seasons playing in the league. The
Golden Rams rolled to a 10-3 first-half advantage and never were threatened
after jumping out to the huge lead.
The Golden Rams improved to 16-1 on the season after beating the Huskies for
the third time this year. Bloomsburg drops to 12-6.
West Chester scored the game's first four goals before Bloomsburg's Karla
Honeywell got the Huskies on the board. West Chester answered right
back and Bloomsburg closed the gap to 5-2 when Danielle Yeager scored with
18 minutes left before the break. That is as close as the game would
get, however, as West Chester went on a 5-1 scoring barrage before the half
and then registered the first four tallies in the second stanza.
Martin was named the MVP of the title game after scoring three times and
handing out a pair of assists. She improved her all-time career total to 191
goals, breaking the record of 190 previously held by Downingtown High School
graduate Kim Rochon. Martin is a junior with another season to play.
Martino collected her 100th career victory to become the first West Chester
University women’s lacrosse coach to reach the century mark. She broke the
all-time school record for wins on April 19 in a 14-9 triumph over LIU-C.W.
Post. Current West Chester University field hockey coach Kathy Krannebitter
– who served in the dual-role of women’s lacrosse coach from 1986-97 –
recorded 95 wins during her tenure.
McGoldrick, meanwhile, picked up two goals and two assists on Saturday and
moved to 51 assists for the 2005 season. She became the first WCU player to
post 50 assists in one campaign.
Danielle Roy (Feasterville/Villa Joseph Marie) scored twice and registered a
pair of helpers, while Caitlin Pettit (Media/Penncrest), Ariel Cocco
(Phoenixville/Phoenixville) each recorded a hat-trick. Tara Wagner
(Hatfield/North Penn) also scored twice along with Christa Somits (West
Chester/West Chester Henderson) who punched in the game-winner from Molly
Halberstadt (Lansdale/North Penn).
Chelsea Marshall and the Golden Ram defense kept an opponent at five goals
or less for the eighth time this season as the first-year starter earned her
14th victory of 2005.
The Golden Rams have now won 17 PSAC Championships, including six under
Martino (1998-99, 2001-02, 2004-05). As a program, the Golden Rams captured
the PSAC Championship from 1983-87, 1992-99, 2001-02 and 2004-05.
The Golden Rams have competed in the PSAC for 19 seasons since 1983, playing
in the title game every year with the exception of 2000. In 2003, West
Chester lost to Bloomsburg – the only time it has lost a PSAC Championship.
WCU did not compete in the PSAC from 1988-91.
