The IUP men's golf team captured the
2007 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Golf
Team Championship, edging out the California
women by eight strokes in the 36-hole tournament. The
Crimson Hawks totaled 606, shooting a 13-over par
301 for the first day and 17-over par 305 in the
final round.
California's women started the final round of
the tournament in third place with a 313, but
used a second-day total of 301 to overcome
Clarion and claim runners-up with a final score
of 614.
Millersville claimed third place with a 621,
shooting 323 the first day and 298 in the final
round. Clarion finished fourth (622) while
West Chester men finished fifth (636).
California's men (641), Kutztown (663) and the
West Chester women (787) rounded out the eight
team field.
IUP's Gavin Smith won the individual
title, registering a two-day total of 141
(68-73) and was named the tournament's Most
Valuable Player. Smith's 68 was also the
lowest round of the tournament.
The 2007 championship was held at the
Wren Dale Golf Club in Hummelstown, Pa.
Wren Dale's par 72 course played at 7009 yards
for the men, while the women tee off at
approximately 81 percent of the men's tees.
The
PSAC Golf Championship is unique in that it is
the only conference championship in which men's
and women's teams compete for the same title.
The league consists of men's teams from
California (Pa.), Clarion, Indiana (Pa.),
Millersville and West Chester, and women's teams
from California, Kutztown and West Chester.
