BLOOMSBURG— Maggey Bloskey's goal early in the second half
of action lifted the Bloomsburg University field hockey team
to a 1-0 win over Shippensburg University and the 2006
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athletic
Conference championship.
The
PSAC title was the 14th in school history for the
Huskies. Bloomsburg, ranked number one in field hockey, also
remains unbeaten at 22-0.
The
Huskies controlled the early action in the game keeping the
ball on the Shippensburg side of midfield for a large
portion of the first half. Bloomsburg had a couple of
scoring chances on penalty corners midway through the half,
but could not convert.
Later in the half, the Lady Raiders drove into the circle
and came up with a few penalty corner chances of their own,
but Bloomsburg goalie Tracey Hudak made a couple of kick
saves to keep the game scoreless.
Early in the second half, the Huskies finally got on the
board. Samantha Kropa dribbled the ball deep into the cirle
and tried to center the ball to a teammate. After the ball
was batted around a few times, Kelly Trevisan was able to
pass to Bloskey who beat the Shippensburg goalie for what
would turnout to be the game's only goal just 2:52 into the
half.
Shippensburg later moved the in the scoring circle and came
away with five penalty corners chances. But, each time the
Bloomsburg defense either slapped the ball away or Hudak
made a kick save.
In
the end, Hudak was named tournament MVP for making 13 saves
in the two games of the PSAC playoffs.
Shippensburg, ranked number two in the country, falls to
16-5 with the loss.
Both teams will now await word on the NCAA playoffs with the
bids to the championships to be announced on Monday.
