Championship Game Recap
Millersville, Pa. – Jahzinga Tracey scored 20 points and
grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Indiana (Pa.) University to a
63-53 win over California (Pa.) University in the title game
of the 2007 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women’s
Basketball Championship.
The win for IUP marked its second-ever league title since
the tournament began in 1980, the other coming in 1988.
California was the defending league champion and had won
four of the last five titles.
The momentum swung several times throughout the contest,
particularly in the first 25 minutes. IUP opened the game
with a 16-4 advantage with 9:47 remaining in the first
half. California would score the game’s next five points
and eventually finished with a 16-4 run of its own to knot
the score at 20-20 with 3:23 left in the half.
The teams traded points to keep the game tied at 24-24, but
beginning at the 1:16 mark, California scored the final six
points of the stanza to take a 30-24 edge into the locker
room.
The Crimson Hawks regained control out of the locker room
with a 10-2 run to take a 34-32 lead. From that point on,
the game went back and forth with four lead changes and
three ties until Tracey gave IUP the lead for good, 45-43,
with 6:58 remaining. That two-pointer by Tracey spurred an
8-0 run in which she accounted for six of the markers.
Tracey, the tournament MVP, scored 42 points, and grabbed 18
rebounds and eight steals over the two-day event. In the
title game, she was aided by Staci Heberling, who hit for 16
points and grabbed eight boards.
California got a strong effort from Kim Nowakowski, who
scored 11 points and snared a game-high 20 rebounds.
Lindsay Johnson was the top scorer for the Lady Vulcans with
14 points.
With the win IUP received an automatic berth to the NCAA
Championship Tournament. The playoffs begin on the regional
level from March 9-12 at a site yet to be determined.
